  1. LOL, I'm guessing that Mr. Bee doesn't have his copy of the game yet! ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  2. Killmore, I just ran those specs and ended up with the Germans having 2(!) Panthers. Actually turned out to be a nice little battle. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  3. The manual indicates that upon starting CM for the first time, there should be a message detecting your 3D card which lists your name and asks for the resolution that you want. I am using a Diamond Viper 770 Ultra, but the query does not indicate that the card has been discovered. I get only the following message: 3D Direct Test: Primary Display Driver Resolution 800x600 Maybe that's right and I just don't know it, but I just wanted to double check. Any ideas? ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  4. I am compiling a list of recommended reading, which will be posted to my web site soon. In the meantime, there are SEVERAL threads on the topic already. Click on "search" on the top of the page, and use either my name or "recommended reading" or something similar. BTW, ths short answer to your question (IMHO) is Michael Doubler's Closing With The Enemy ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com

  7. I wasn't going to reply, but I can't resist. Got mine yesterday (Monday), and I fired up a nifty quick battle. Ended up with a company of Brits with many wheeled vehicles and 1/2-tracks attacking a German force centered around a StuG, Hetzer and a gun that I never did ID. Pulled off a total victory, mostly because my one tank (a Firefly) was in a major groove. I don't think he missed a shot all game. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com

  9. My sympathies, Bullethead. Your contributions to the forum are always valuable and helpful, and it's a shame to see you smacked around by the gods like this. Geez, I hope it doesn't happen to me when I get home tonight! ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com

  12. A few months ago some folks discussed putting together a list of suggested reading for background on CM. I am willing to host the final list (ideally broken down by topic, or at least by West Front/East Front/PTO etc.) on my web page. I would appreciate it if anyone who's been working on this project could drop me an email. If we can get at least a skeletal list up soon, it will help with the influx of questions that will arise when the game is released. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 06-12-2000).]
  13. Search some more! przy's comments were not in any way out of line, considering the volume of discussion that has already taken place on this matter. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  14. Both are terrific, and as stated above Rommel's is more pertinent to CM's scale. I'd also recommend The Rommel Papers, which is edited by Liddell-Hart. I was pleasantly surprised with Rommel's writing. His style is elegant in its simplicity, without becoming stale military prose. I don't know if he had a collaborator on Attacks, but judging from his memoirs he was a genuinely excellent writer. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 06-10-2000).]
  15. One of the more interesting U.S. opinions of Monty can be found in General James Gavin's book On To Berlin. He spends significant time defending Monty's generalship, but emphasizes how by the end of the war his personality had eroded even his most fervent U.S. supporters. Any support he may have enjoyed among U.S. officers was completely obliterated by his post-Aredennes press conference, in which he described the battle as "one of the most interesting and tricky that I have ever handled." To be fair, the British press added fuel to the fire by lauding Monty's "achievements" and criticizing Ike's handling of the land battle. It's an interesting book, and I believe that Gavin is one of the tremendously underappreciated officers of the war. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  16. guachi, Monroe? I've spent some serious time down there on business lately. Make sure that you check out The Waterfront Grill over by Northeast Louisiana. Right on the bayou, and it has great little blackened filets. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  17. I can't believe that nobody's put 1 and 1 together yet... Fionn and Lewis are one and the same! That's right, "Flewis" was posting in response to himself...repeatedly! The "flame war" was, in reality, just a chance for the rest of us to peek into the tortured soul of this disturbed man. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 06-05-2000).]
  18. Picked it up last week, but I haven't read it yet. I'd better get moving, as my free time will be spoken for very soon ! ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  19. Let me second "Rommel's" recommendation of Rommel's Infantry Attacks. Actually, I think the latest U.S. version is simply called "Attacks". Either way it's one of the most interesting books on small unit tactics I've ever seen. Rommel (The Original, of course ) has a wonderful knack for clearly conveying complex situations with easy to grasp language. von Mellenthin's book is also great, but more for the operational and strategic level discussions. I figured that's whay I'd get from von Manstein as well. Thanks for all the replies. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  20. One of my local book dealers just got a copy of von Manstein's book (Lost Victory? ). I ran a search, but it didn't turn up too much. Has anyone read this? If so, what are your thoughts on it? ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 06-01-2000).]

  22. LaGrange, in the Western suburbs just outside of Chicago. FWIW, anything that close to Carbondale really should be considered Kentucky! ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 05-28-2000).]
  23. This happened to me in a current PBEM game. I don't have a saved file unfortunately. It took a gun hit, and it wouldn't fire the MG's either. There were working MG's listed in the stats for the tank. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  24. 1. Short answer: Read Doubler's Closing With The Enemy. 2. Better answer: Do a search for "recommended reading" or "book recommendations", crack open a cold one and start taking notes. Be forewarned that this can cost you some money! ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
  25. Everybody raves about Hastings, but I found Overlord to be laughable in its ceaseless praise of the Germans. He bases a fair amount of his work on Paul Carell's Invasion , which was one of the most disappointing things I've read lately. Carell has some wonderful first person accounts and anecdotes, but he mars the work by simplistic negative criticism of the allies. While they are both more careful in their technical accuracy, both come of almost like Ambrose from the "other side of the hill". I'd still recommend both though. It's nice to know what's out there. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 05-23-2000).] [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 05-23-2000).] [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 05-23-2000).]
