  1. I recommend "Ostfront" by Charles Winchester. The local grogs have singed me a bit about it, but I think it's a great, light introduction and overview. Puts everything into context nicely and has an exhaustive bibliography that can guide more detailed study.
  2. (In Mr. Burns voice, dripping with anticipation) Exxxxcellent [ September 07, 2002, 03:50 AM: Message edited by: RobVarak ]
  3. I know, I know, "Who's got time to read now?". But there were about a million threads about reading before the demo was bestowed upon us, and I'm sure there are a few curious souls. I've been on an Eastern Front binge since Spring. Read both Erickson's, a bunch of Glantz, and no less than a half-dozen others. For those looking for a fine overview with brisk writing, purty pictures and reasonable price, I am compelled to recommend OSTFRONT, Hitler's War on Russia 1941-45 by Charles Winchester. ISBN 1-84176-066-8. This is a decidedly non-grog effort, so those of you who quibble with this tome can stifle it It's not perfect. However, Winchester's notes are thorough and his bibliography is excellent. He incorporates the more incisive theories espoused by Glantz and Zaloga, which lifts the level of discussion above many of the other general histories in the area. And he relies on Werth for compelling personal accounts. It is published by Osprey, which means it contains extensive material from their Men at War and Campaign series, particularly color plates of uniforms and equipment. If you are looking for the first thing to read for background on the Eastern Front, get this book. [ September 05, 2002, 05:15 PM: Message edited by: RobVarak ]
  4. I also recently picked up the Cassell Atlas of WW II. Not quite as good as the effort mentioned above, but adequate.
  5. Saw this on a History Channel show, and knowing their reliability I am seeking confirmation. They mentioned that the BAR was available for U.S. forces in Europe in the Great War, but that the decision was made to restrict their distribution as a means of limiting the liklihood of the Germans obtaining one and copying it. Thus, they were stuck with that awful French Chauchat. If this is true, it has to be one of the most hilarious examples of bass-ackward military thinking I've ever heard!
  6. Mr. Dorosh, Watch the name-calling, please. I don't think it was appropriate. That being said, I'm editing my prior posts. I shouldn't have fed the troll to begin with.

  9. Let me start by thanking Rune (and Mrs. Rune )for the sneak peak and warm hospitality. It was a terrific afternoon. The best way for me to sum up CMBB without getting specific is this. It is such an improvement that after playing for just a few hours, I find it seriously difficult to go back to CMBO. It's more intuitive, more immersive and even more detailed than our beloved original. In short, it totally kicks ass...
  10. Hey Preach, Good times, indeed. Nothing will ever beat playing those same scenarios over and over and over...
  11. Ok, fellas. I shall be there with bells on...and some good beer.
  12. Thanks, fellas. Ironically, I got a great deal on a GeForce 2, spent last night working out the upgrade, got it up and running, checked the boards and saw the new Detonator drivers LOL Probably could've just sat tight and updated the drivers on the TNT2, but oh well...at least I have a better card now. Thanks again for all the help!
  13. Thanks so much. I just wanted to be sure. I think upgrading is the way to go. I'm fairly comfortable with monkeying around with my PC, but I've never done a video card before. Hopefully it won't be too traumatic. Thanks again.
  14. My searching seems to indicate that the flickering in the text since my upgrade to XP is the result of Anti-aliasing issues. Since it isn't possible to "force FSAA" on with the TNT2, those of use with those cards are essentially SOL. Is that right? If so, is upgarding a video card something that I can do without causing the insides of my computer to end up looking like Dresden c. 1944? Any help is, as always, much appreciated.
  15. Ahh, just the thought of the Alpha AAR's makes me a little misty. Ahhhem, huh, hrmph. Sorry, just showing my CM age.
  16. I have to be at the Lucinda Williams/Ryan Adams show at the Riviera at 8, but if I can make it out of my suburban bunker early enough I'll try to stop by on the way.
  17. 29.) Do we get the full movie play-back? ------------------------------------------------ Bah, that Bald megalomaniac didn't answer the BIG ONE! Figures Why do I suspect this may remain unknown until the release?
  18. See my sig for a list compiled by suggestions from forum members.
  19. Just found out that I'm going to have to miss the event. Everyone have an extra one pint for me.
