1. Hey Maus, Two tours in Cham-bana. That's tough duty! I couldn't have taken any more than the time I put in for my undergrad there. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
2. There's info at CMHQ about how to sign up. Head over there. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
3. My cursory overview indicates that I'm the first person on the board courageous enough to admit that I'm an attorney I know there are others out there. It's ok, come on out... In my spare time I've been working on getting an online music mag going. Supposed to do that in my "free" time, but CM isn't doing me any favors in that area. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
4. Geez, I never even contemplated the idea of downloading completed games and watching the movies! That could be spectacular. Of course not to beat a dead horse (but I will anyway ) this would be even cooler if you could watch the entire battle unfold fluidly. Man I hope that BTS can make that work somehow. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
5. Just added my thoughts to the page. Get over there everybody! ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
6. I've been able use arty to force tankers to abandon tanks several times. Often times they will lose a track or suffer a gun hit as well. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
7. Please forgive this "me too" post, but I can't resist. This feature is the only thing that I feel is missing from the game. I mean it's already the best wargame that I've ever played, but to include the full movie feature would just blast it right off the "cool" chart. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
8. I'm hoping to do one on the capture of Schwammenauel dam. If I can pull it off with the editor. From what Matt's shown us, it shouldn't be too hard. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
9. As I noted in another thread, I'm stuck in Louisiana, so I won't get to play until FRIDAY!!!! Oh well, I guess I'm just gonna have to dodge spoilers until then. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
10. A Dark And Bloody Ground: The Hurtgen Forest And The Roer River Dams, 1944-1945 by Edward G. Miller Texas A&M University Press ISBN 0-89096-626-5 I haven't started it yet, but I plan on using it for creating a Roer River Dam scenario. Sounds like it might be what you're looking for, von Shrad. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
11. According to the Internet Movie Database www.imdb.com There are two movies with that name. One is the 20 minute documentary from 1941. The other is the feature film that John is talking about from 1951. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
12. Saw this on FGN, and I thought it might be of some interest: Squad Leader Marches on PC PC: Avalon Hill's classic board game Squad Leader is heading for PC courtesy of Hasbro. The turn based strategy game is set during the Second World War and recreate the famous battles such as the Bulge and Operations Overlord and Market Garden. Players can take on the role of Brits and Americans and even attempt to win the war for the Germans. Squad Leader is set for release in October. 13. I haven't read Frost's book, but "Company Commander" is a classic and a must-read. I just finished James Gavin's "On To Berlin", which was only slightly better than average. Gavin was a great soldier and officer who was present at so many interesting events. Unfortunately, the book seemed a bit too breezy for me. While it contained some interesting bits (particularly his bitter criticism of Eisenhower)it was pretty bland overall. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
14. Anyone remember "Dreadnaughts"? I think it was an early SSI game. Virtually no graphics at all, but it was a blast on the ol' C64! ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
15. I don't mean to discourage you from writing the letter. You should definitely go ahead! I was surprised that he didn't mention CM in that article as well. I just wanted you to know that he was aware of the game. I think he should devote an entire series of articles to CM ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
16. I think that Steve has said that Mr. Trotter is well aware of CM. It's been mentioned in his column already, and I suspect he will devote some of his valuable space to it when it's released as well. Run a search with "Trotter" and that may clarify things. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
17. Madmatt, I believe that I have some pics of the Roer dams somewhere. I'll dig 'em out tonight. FWIW, I don't think you're too far off with what you did. I'm still amazed! ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
18. Man am I glad that I asked ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
19. Thanks for the responses. I guess it's good news that nobody's started on them yet, but bad news that I have to start REALLY doing some research. Anyone have any suggestions for sources? I have MacDonald's official history of the final year of the war, which covers it a bit. I'll have to find some more. I'm anxious to see how Madmatt's experiment turns out. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
20. Do a search with the terms "sound acceleration" or something similar. It's been covered several times before. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 04-07-2000).]
21. I'm thinking about setting up scenarios dealing with various portions of the battles fort the Roer dams. My search didn't turn up anything. So has anyone already started down this road? On a related note, does anyone familiar with the editor have any suggestions about the best way to model the dams? I'm guessing that bridges may work as the best substitute. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
22. They were primarily used by Germans on the Atlantic Wall. In Paul Carell's book on D-day, he indicates that most didn't work because debris and water thrown about by the Allied bombardment fouled up the machinery. He does relate one story (apocryphal or not I don't know) in which curious GI's place a grenade inside of one. Needless to say, it was a rude awakening for the entire squad. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
23. Just picked up Tank Versus Tank: The Illustrated Story of Armored Conflict In The Twentieth Century. While I haven't had a chance to do more than page through it, it looks like quite a find. There are a ton of photos, wonderful cut-aways and diagrams of several key tanks, and terrific battle descriptions with great maps. There are special sections on gun/armor relationships, descriptions of the various types of anti-tank rounds (always a confusing point for me), and sidebars on various famous tank men. The author, Maj. Kenneth Macksey, MC, is a former RTR officer. The date of publication is 1999. I haven't seen it mentioned here before, so I just thought I'd point it out. PS Just finished Von Mellenthin's Panzer Battles, which was very good. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
24. The diplomatic/political origins of the war are too complex to simply blame the English. For an in depth examination of the 19th century roots of the conflict, as well as a detailed description of the events leading up to the war, see Kissinger's DIPLOMACY. It's sort of a dry read (it is Hank, after all ), but well worth it for those interested in the history of diplomacy. Beware that it covers much more than simply the origins of the First World War. ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com [This message has been edited by RobVarak (edited 03-30-2000).]
25.
quote:
Originally posted by bazooka10165: I hope so. I'm just finishing up a PBEM game in which the rubble bug got 18 of my men, including an entire MG42 unit. That one hurt.

Come on, it was the only part of the battle that came out in my favor. Could you please stop dwelling on it? ------------------ Rob Varak Editor Site on Sound: The Web's Premier Site For Musical Discussion www.siteonsound.com
