Spontaneously generated maps was a feature I liked and missed in CMx2, but the maps we have now are all more meticulously drawn and detailed, and sometimes more historically accurate. So at the end of the day, I'd have to say we are better off now. Perfection would be spontaneously drawn maps as nicely done as todays...but that is probably not possible at the present time. So it goes into the distant wish bucket.

Yeah, remember that from all appearances they'd like to have fun at their jobs as well as to be able to make a living at it. I seriously doubt that they are the kind of people who would be willing to be chained to a desk grinding out mediocre games for a large audience of mostly meatheads, even if that got them into a higher tax bracket.

It's a tradeoff. Full trees are prettier but sometimes obscure the view of the things one is interested in; result: confusion.

    Depends on:
    1. What level of difficulty you are playing at.
    2. How long it takes the firing battery to get rounds in the air. This is effected by the experience level of the battery and the caliber of their weapon.
    3. How long it takes for the spotter to see a spotting round and call in corrections, then how many corrections need to be made before "fire for effect" can be called for.
There may be an extra factor or two, but those are what come immediately to mind. As far as what a player can reliably expect, the matter is largely by guess and by gosh, but the more experience you have the better your guesses are likely to be, but in the end there is an ineradicable factor of chance involved.

I kind of agree with that. Which is to say that it annoyed me a little that it was really hard to make out what was written underneath in places. I can live with it, but it seems like you were trying too hard to make it look authentic; you could back off a little and be more subtle in applying the gore.
    Otherwise...keep up the great work!

This happens to me all the time with most of the baked in scenarios that come with the game, which is why I mostly ignore them. Instead, I create my own using the Quick Battle tools. I also find most big battles tiresome. For WW II I usually attack with a company of infantry reinforced with a platoon of tanks, or something similar, against an objective defended by a platoon or two of mostly strong infantry.
What I am trying to do in that is to put myself in the position of the commander of the commander who has been given the job of capturing the objective. I would want to have confidence in his unit's ability to achieve the objective in the time allotted even if he is only an average officer. So I would try to provide him with the resources to do so. Most of the scenarios that come with the game are winnable, but they can be a real struggle requiring a commander who is both brilliant and lucky. That is not a reliable way to win a war.

I notice that the exhaust smoke of Russian diesels does something like that too.

The problem with this is that the player can see these all over the map, thus giving away the position of any enemy units that he shouldn't know the whereabouts of. It is bad enough that vehicle unit crossing fences give away their positions already, and men fording streams leave splash marks while in the water.

It could only improve it. British slang particularly is often not only opaque, it's downright ugly.

Actually, I am not at all convinced that his reputation as a great war leader is entirely deserved. For instance, he had a bad habit of committing the Army into operations it had no reasonable hope of winning when the shrewder strategy would have been to husband his forces and commit them when they had a reasonable hope of victory. Greece and BATTLEAXE come immediately to mind and SHINGLE might also be mentioned along with come other actions. As a consequence, the Army lost thousands of men fruitlessly thrown away and not available when a genuine opportunity arose.

That's my thinking too. A lot of the ideas being put forward to combat climate change are good. But they should have been done fifty years ago. Now, if we don't enact far more radical ideas, we will simply be overwhelmed.
