  1. DOG Ever think about value? I have been computer gaming for 8 years now, and typically buying 5 games per year. Since I discovered the CM Beta demo last November, I have bought only 1 game - CM. Yet I still manage to game about 10 hours a week, just as before. Let's see, that makes CM worth about 5xUS$45=US$225. And if that's what it cost, I'd still buy it! So stop yer yelping
  2. Well, I really hate to drag this thread back out of the cesspool, but here goes: According to the Complete Encyclopedia of WWII weapons, the top barrel on the American Howitzer gun is actually a 37mm gun, used for training purposes only. The cost of 75mm ammunition was much too high to be wasted, so the smaller barrel was used. There you have it. Gerbil-meister Hundminen
  3. Excellent idea L4Pilot! In fact, this may be one aspect where Age of Empires is actually more realistic than CM! Although, if camera angle was restricted to LOS of friendly troops, then that might serve same purpose.
  4. One more wish for CM2: The ability to lock PBEM games to camera view 1 or 2 only, giving a soldier's eye view of the entire battle. I've played PBEM's where we both promised to stay low level, but when you have several games going on at once, it's easy to mess up and go with birds-eye camera. By the way, does anybody know if BTS has stated which features they are planning to incorporate, and what the status is with CM2?
  5. Here are the things I'd like to see in CM2: 1) Hundminen (of course). 2) Ammunition carriers (like Private Upham) would add unique tactical element. 3) Rivers and bridges in QBs. 4) Pre-made maps in QBs. 5) CM2 should come with a patch to upgrade CM1 engine to match CM2.
  6. I agree. Company Commander is a good one. But also, Roll Me Over by Raymond Gantner (sp?) is also a good one for getting a feel for the life of the common grunt. Also, The Thin Red Line (the book - NOT THE MOVIE) is also a good fictional account of infantry tactics.
  7. Where are they going? Like, is there another board like this somewhere on the net with more mature discussions? [yawn...zzzz] If you can't stand the flamers, do like I do: Ignore them completely. Don't reply to them. Move on to the next topic. PBEM. Get on with it.
  8. I agree. One of the best aspects of multiplayer CC2, which IMHO is superior to all subequent CC games, and perhaps the only aspect superior to CM is this: 1) The offering player would present a map with associated deployment zones, victory locations(attack/meeting/defend), and number of points for each side. 2) The second player would then have a chance to review the map to pick sides before starting. (What could be more fair?). 3) Then both players would spend their points on whatever units they wanted (not realistic but a hoot anyway), and deploy them on the map. As a bonus, the second players' hard drive inherited the map automatically, for use in subsequent games. I think it would be fantastic if BTS adopted something like this for CM or CM2.
  9. L.Tankersly & eba: Only problem with playing QB's on previously created maps is just that. They're previously created, and may be known to one player and not the other. Although, I agree, being able to pick battle type, size, and units on these maps would definitely be cool. And this, I think, would be relatively easy to patch. BTS: Care to chime in on this or the QB/river request?
  10. Hey Borg: My wife is getting nervous and suspicious of all this assimilation talk amongst us men. Could you find a better name for it?
  11. Let me qualify some things: Mark IV: True enough. I imagine rivers could be restricted to PBEM only. Jarmo: Let's assume a random selection of either 1, 2 or 3 crossings (including at least 1 bridge).
  12. I saw a post by Blackwood back in July, requesting rivers be added to QB's in a future patch. My prefered mode of PBEM play is QB, and a river feature with one or more crossings would add immense realism to the QB experience. We all know that rivers were used extensively as natural defensive barriers, and crossings created an opportunity for inferior forces to bottle up and concentrate fire power upon the enemy. I think this would be a MAJOR enhancement to the QB generator. The tactical possibilities are astounding. So I am curious if BTS has any plans to implement such a patch in the future? By the way, I am in awe of the QB generator as it stands today, and the brilliant code that is behind it. If Steve and Charles could eliminate all those little pyramids , surely they could add rivers as well. [This message has been edited by Hundminen (edited 09-05-2000).]
  13. I have experienced some attrition lately amongst the ranks of my PBEM opponents, and some replacements are urgently needed. Please report for duty at the above e-mail address for your orders.
  14. Actually made it down to my local (near Toronto) Toys'R'Us today, and many of these 21centurytoys are actually in stock there. Only problem is the soldiers are like $39Canadian each (US$28), and the vehicles are even more! They are very cool though. Thought the better of it and got the little guy a box of Lego instead.
  15. It says avaialble "exclusively at Toys'r'us". I think I'm gonna drive my 4 year old boy down to Toys'r'us tomorrow for a bit of shopping.
  16. What is that thread all about anyway? I don't have time to sift through all that nonsense. Can anybody boil it down for me and describe it in 25 words or less?

  18. Reno: I agree, the Times Altas of WWII is possibly the finest reference book I have found on WWII, an excellent read. However, I found it is really "big picture" stuff for the most part, and detailed maps of smaller battles such as around Arnhem drop zones are quite rare. It is really strategic in scale. Actually, what I had in mind was more like Great Battles of the Civil War (by John MacDonald, edited bt John Keegan - MacMillan ISBN 0-02-034554-2). This excellent book devotes several pages to each battle (about 20 battles in all), covering the background, the main characters, a hand illustrated 3d map, a topographical map, some force graphs, battle chronology, and some pictures and diagrams as well. it does a real thorough job of giving you a picure of the battles. Only trouble is there's no Tiger tanks and zooks.
  19. I am eager to part with a fist full of cash in exchange for a big glossy book, with lots of maps (showing elevation contours, terrain, lines of advance), and detailed descriptions (with full OOB's and chronologies) of major and (lots of) minor battles of WWII. I have found examples of these books covering less significant eras such as the civil war, and WWI, but nothing for WWII. I am at a loss why such a book has never been published, but my guess is it would be a bestseller amongst members of this forum.
  20. BTS Not to sound ungrateful, but a little too much of a good thing is a bad thing. I've got 7 or 8 active PBEM opponents with various patch versions, and it's now getting difficult managing them all. I don't see anything really major in this patch or the previous one. Perhaps it would simplify our lives if these minor patches were grouped together and released less frequently? Unless, of course, TCP/IP is patched. You can do that one anytime
  21. In the game of chess, your move is not complete until you remove your finger from the peice. So how come with CM, if I click target for an arty unit or spotter, and before I set the location of the target, I can't change my mind and decide to not target that unit that turn. I'd like to somehow "escape" from the command without bouncing to my desktop. Am I missing something?
  22. Peter: Did you have an ATI or Voodoo card? I had both at various stages in past. ATI card uninstalled cleanly, but old Voodoo was a real pain in the neck. Had to edit windows registry to get it working. Basically, you go in and delete every reference you can find to voodoo. You can find directions on net, I think a good site to check is www.voodoousers.com or something like that.
