  1. Actually, it was the link to the Gamepspot top 40 games of all time poll, not the review. It was posted July 13 by Spook. [This message has been edited by Hundminen (edited 07-15-2000).]
  2. About a week or so, I checked out a thread here, which linked to a Gamespot survey of the top 40 games, posted by Spook "Ok stormtroopers, another survey...", and now something very weird is lurking on my hard drive. I have the following folders: c:\program files\TimeSink\AdGateway\Ads\2301\... installed and I cannot remove the 2301 folder which apparently occupies 2,600,000,000,000,000 bytes of memory!!! This does not show up on c:\ properties as a problem, but when I "find file", it stalls on this folder. There is about a thousand folders with greek looking charachter names in the 2301 folder. None can be deleted. ("Cannot delete file: file system error 1026"). Anyway, I tracked the problem back to this board, because doing a search on the internet connected TimeSink to Gamespot, and I linked Gamespot is right here last week, and also before to look at the 9.1 review (well done BTS ). I don't recall ever linking to Gamespot other than that. I wonder if anybody else linking to Gamespot from this board also has the same mystery files on their hard drives? Can anybody help me? 3. Now that I've managed to get in a few games with the AI, I'm looking to pick a few fights with some of the so-called grognards around here Can anybody suggest a popular site where players can post their game preferences and e-mail adresses? Hundminen
  4. Let's not forget another thing American's gave the rest of the world... Combat Mission!!! God Bless America. Besides, My mom's a Yankee, so I can't bash 'em too much
  5. How about... "Oh! A Deutsch Hund! Come to Herr papa! Vait a minute! Vas is das thing on his back?!? Is das a bomb? A minen?!? ... Couldnt resist
  6. Obviously, this is one PBEM opponent everyone should steer well clear of.
  7. I find I am wasting a lot of points when using human unit selection. The game seems to allow you to spend so many points per unit category (eg, infantry, weapons teams, etc). However, if a platoon costs slightly more than half the allocation for that category, I end up wasting the balance. Is there any way to pick the extra platoon (for example), then delete a squad to get the spent points slightly below the allocated points? I can't seem to select or delete parts of units even though the points for that part are shown individually.
  8. Thanks for the info. The "gamesofwar" site looks good - has the most submissions, and some interesting stuff to boot!
  9. Ok, so now that most of us have had it for a week or two (except Canadians), is anyone creating and submitting new scenarios, and if so, where do I find them? I found 2 from Wild Bill at CMHQ, but I would expect to see a few more DIY battles by now.
  10. "Hide" is not always the best deployment for situations where you are trying to prevent your infantry from picking off targets at 500 yards or more, and wasting their ammo. Also, you cannot move, and spotting is poor while hiding. Perhaps there should be a "conserve ammo" command that would inhibit units from firing at targets at more than half the range of the weapon. Just a thought.
  11. I am familiar with the ambush command, but I am looking for an alternate way to make my troops hold fire unless otherwise instructed. My concern is when they shoot opportunity fire at long ranges, while moving or still, and I would prefer them to conserve their ammo, or not broadcast their position. Is there an easy way to do this other than the ambush command?
  12. Nothing yet here in Toronto. Just got back from 2-1/2 week business trip today, fully expecting to find CM waiting for me. Oh well, guess I should spend some time with wife and kids this week anyway
  13. IMO, one of the finest strategic level WW2 books, called WHY THE ALLIES WON (Richard Overy), covered many of the themes already discussed in this thread in great detail. Another interesting (albeit less significant) factor that Overy covers, is that German war industry was subordinate to the whims and demands of the Werhmacht and Luftwaffe, which led to a vast array of varying models and manufacturers of weapons. The Germans never truly mastered the art of mass production as did the British, Americans, and Soviets.
  14. Yeah, the book was good (aside from those homosexual encounters - not that there's anything wrong with that). One of the first books on WW2 I read that explored pre-battle fear and post-battle numbness so well. Actually, I haven't really read any fiction novels that cover the battle scenes so convincingly. However, the movie was a bit of a yawn, and does not come close to the novel.
  15. My name is Hundminen...and I AM CANADIAN. Torontonian here (yes, go ahead and hate me). Seriously though, I don't know if Dieppe would make the most balanced scenario or campaign. I was thinking the fighting around Ortona or Caen would make for some excellent scenarios involving Canadians.
  16. I'm a little embarassed to admit I live in Woodbridge, a fine Italian-Canadian 'burb north of Toronto. Not Italian myself, but we all know Italians are great lovers, not fighters. Actually a very nice spot to live. Babra, I used to live in south Etobicoke (Mimico and South kingsway), and still work there. What part of south Etobicoke are you in?
  17. Now, let's do the accounting: If we are to assume each copy costs $25 to manufacture (and this is strictly a guess - actual cost might include a one time cost, and a per copy cost), then BTS would earn $20 per copy. In order to earn a competitive wage, BTS would want to make (pre-tax) at least $50K per man-year, and my guess the product took 4 man-years of work. Then BTS would have to sell 10,000 copies just to make a decent living. Come on loyal CM fans - get your pre-orders in, and support Steve and Charles!
  18. Gee...I guess you really are a "user"
  19. LOL - funniest thread I've seen in a long while.
  20. I found the problem playing the Germans was my bunkers (concrete too) and AT gun were easily neutralized by the heavy American arty shelling. Is there a bunker deployment that is less suseptable to shelling, yet with good LOS to advancing infantry?
  21. My guess is "B" - Germans + 25%, makes it most fair. With no handicap, I have beaten AI easily as Americans every time, but only managed draw as Germans.
  22. OB&G: Agreed, that Americans might receive their copies around June 4 (or 5, or 6, or...). Canada Customs (also known as Revenue Canada), is another matter altogether. I'm not holding my breath. I predict I won't see my copy until mid June, and that is still another 4 weeks away.

  24. Most of us have been patiently awaiting receiving the Gold final release, and it is apparent we won't see it arrive at our door until early-mid June sometime (hopefully Canadians will recieve it only a day or two later than Americans - the Yanks need a head start anyway ) The Gold demo has certainly wetted our appetite, but most of us have already gone through it a couple of times. My question: Is it possible to post the game manual online on your site (on acrobat or other reader)? I am assuming it is printed already. It may actually be a good marketing tool. There may be piracy concerns, or it may be too much work. I'll understand if that is the case - just let us know. Just my 2Looneys/100 worth.
