  1. Purchased the World at War box set (9 volumes with 3 episodes each)6 months ago, and it was definitely a good watch. However, be warned, it does NOT glamorize war, and mostly covers real big picture stuff like politics, national strategies, human suffering, etc. Not a lot of tactical insights you might be looking for.
  2. Does BRAVEHEART count as a war movie? If so, it gets my vote. It is the story of William Wallace, and the Scottish struggle against England around 1300. Wallace recruited men working under English rule (and tyranny) to form a Scottish army which defeated the English army at Stirling. The victory gained Scotland independence, which was short-lived, as the Scots were later smashed at Falkirk. Wallace was driven underground, but led a successful guerilla campaign against the English, until he was betrayed by Scottish nobility, and captured. Besides being a great war movie, my wife loves Mel flicks. Finally a movie we both really liked! [This message has been edited by Hundminen (edited 08-11-2000).]
  3. If so, what is your impression with the game? I figure many allied WWII vets from the "beyond Normandy" period are still in their mid 70's, so it's not inconceivable they may have tried it. My own father-in-law is 75, and he has shown a little interest in it. Just curious.
  4. Crumply: IIRC, accepted GI tactic was to not have platoon leaders in front, they were too valuable for that. Rather, the squads would lead, sometimes with scouts out in the front, or going parallel, to flush out any ambush situations.
  5. Toronto, Upper Canada (Ontario) Where are all the other Canadians, there is more of us, you know, eh?
  6. Q: Why do most men die before their wives? ******************************* A: Because they want to. ******************************* 38 and climbing.
  7. My 4.5 year olds love the smoke. I'm just glad there's no blood. Actually I'm mighty surprised anybody with 3 and 4 year olds gets an opportunity to play before they're in bed.
  8. In map editor click preview, then click on each unit and manually place it in the location or zone you want. The set-up phase would then begin with those placements which, of course, can be adjusted by the player. I had same problem, and Wild Bill set me straight.
  9. I have developed a company sized scenario with an American infantry company with Sherman platoon attacking a succession of 3 villages with bridges. Germans are also company size with minor PZIV support. The map is somewhat unique, and I need volunteers to test PBEM balance with. Please e-mail me if you're interested, and I'll send you the scenario. Hundminen [This message has been edited by Hundminen (edited 07-30-2000).]
  10. I have developed a medium sized scenario, played out on a custom map, and I would like to play out a couple of PBEM games. Please let me know if your interested, let me know your side preference, and I'll send you the set-up file. By the way, the basic parameters are as follows: Allies: American Infantry Company & Sherman platoon, 1300 pts. Axix: German Infantry Company & 1/2 Pz IV platoon, 1,100 pts. Type: Allied Attack Date: July '44 FOW: Full Hundminen
  11. "My bible for ww2 is "The complete encyclopedia of Weapons of World War 2" I agree this book is astounding, jam backed with info, and it is big and comprehensive. Best of all, this one has been available in the bargain section of most Canadian book stores (Chapters, Coles, WHSmith), for the past 2 years, and is only $30 canadiian ($20US). Get it if you can.
  12. Excellent idea Intelweenie. I think it would be very cool to see units which can be bought which would carry extra ammo for small arms. These "carriers" were realistically brought forward in some circumstances, particularly during attack . Better yet, it would be add a tactical element to corner and anhilate these mini-ammo supplies.
  13. I don't know how many are like me, but I haven't bought another PC game since the CM Gold demo came out several months ago. In fact, I can't even bring myself to even visit my favourite Costco or EBX to check out the latest releases. Not interested in other games, period. Not even close. No time to even look at another game. I bet I won't buy another PC game this year. Maybe next year too - unless CM2 is released. How can I, with all these new user scenario's and great PBEM partners out there? These BTS guys have spoiled us, and they've ruined the computer gaming industry forever!
  14. I also agree wholeheartedly. If there is one thing I'd like to see in the 1.03, it's to know what kind of force your up against. In addition, it would be nice to see the whole map before picking units (as in CC3) but I'll settle for Kurtz's suggestions.
  15. I paid about same. No GST, PST, Duty!!!
  16. I have created a scenario, where I have chosen specific zones on the map where I want the troops to be deployed initially. For example, I have selected a fairly small zone in the corner of the map where I want the allies to start, and I have given most of the rest of the map to the axis. These zones are clearly shown in the MAP section of the scenario creator. However, no matter what I do, it seems the battle always starts with the allies all along the west edge of the map, some inside and most outside of the deployment zone. I want them all to start inside the deployment zone. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
  17. Thanks a million guys! My wife has a new found respect for wargamers. Actually Babra, she does closed captioning in English, not translations.
  18. My wife does closed captioning for the hearing impaired, and she just started a run of old Hogan's Heroes episodes. She is having problems with the word that sounds like "YAVOLT" or "JA VOLE", as in "YAVOLT Herr Commandant!", which is frequently exclaimed by Schmidt the prison camp guard. We are having trouble finding the correct spelling in our English-German dictionary. Does anybody here know the correct German spelling of this word? I figured some of you guys might know. Danke Shen
  19. I agree this is definitely immersive. Wouldn't it be cool if BTS added a level 1 only option as patch for PBEM or internet play? [This message has been edited by Hundminen (edited 07-18-2000).]
  20. I'm looking to start a couple PBEM games. Please post below, or just send me your first turn, if you're interested in a game. These are my preferences: Game: Full Version 1.01 Skill: Green/Regular Game Size: Small/Medium (500-700pts) Map Size: Medium/Large Game Type: Quick battle Unit Selection: Human Side: Allies or Axis No. Turns per Week: 5-10 Hundminen
  21. No I don't have the Cute FTP. Is the size of your TimeSink also in the gazillions of bytes?
  22. Thanks for the useful advice fd ski. Deleting the files in ms/dos did not work, so I ran ScanDisk and then Norton Disk Doctor, and it repaired all the files, and then I could delete them. Hopefully I've seen the last of that! Hundminen
