CNET article: Wargames are dying
Fred replied to Disaster@work's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Yes, wargames are dead since 10 years now, and rpg games are dead since the demise of TSR...and suddenly Baldurs Gate sold more copies then all the hyped RTS games. So, I guess we all are Zombies We never were mainstream and hopefully we never will be mainstream. This RTS hype will fade sooner or later, but quality will still hold the position. I always smile when I read articles that claim the death of this or that...and ususally it is the writer that dies long before the announced genre Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission -

Whats going on with TCP/IP support?!
Fred replied to duck's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
TCP/IP...I really do not need it...playing a complex wargame/consim like CM while the other guy is waiting for my turn...wait, hmmm lets play some ASL...come on...30 minutes, and NOT one SINGLE counter moved...whats up with you? The complex level of this gem of a wargame fits perfectly to PBEM, but not TCP/IP...at least I prefer to think before I issue orders. But this is just my humble opinion...20 years of wargaming spoiled me, I guess Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission -

quote:
Originally posted by Quango: That's what you read. I said that it would remain a niche product.
quote:
Imagine if AoE was turn based!! It would have remained a niche product.. which is what I suspect CM will probably be.

Well, I think AoE does not compare to CM And yes, it is a niche product, but maybe you read some of the reviews and look what other people say about CM and the turn-based system. At least, they seem to like it Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission -
Combat Mission/Close combat first impressions

I guess you are looking at CM as a "CC with 3D"; well it is not and it will certainly never go real-time. The points about "full squads" and "dead bodies" were discussed to death. For me, 12 men on the screen for every squad would not even slow down the game, but would clutter the screen. Well, as a german I prefer to play the german side, but I also love all the battles with allied airborne units. I play all Market Garden scenarios as the Allies, following the exploits of the stout-hearted Red Devils, admiring the valor of the Polish paratroopers and the deeds beyond the call of duty of the US 81. and 101. Airborne. Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission

BTS: CM v1.04 - What will it include?
Fred replied to Mikester's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Right now, I know of three fixes: 1. Missing rotate command for 88mm guns. 2. Reinforcements placed too far away from the set entry point and/or in prohibited terrain. 3. The AI does not use its reinforcements in many scenarios; they just sit at their starting position until the end of the scenario. At least point 3. calls for a quick fix. Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission -
This mis-placement of reinforcements (to far away from the set entry point) will be adressed in the patch. Worse is, that the AI will not use reinforcements in most scenarios; you can verify it after the battle, when whole formations of AI troops are at their starting position and never moved. I hope for a hot-fix soon, because right now I don't play any canned scenarios vs. the AI because of this bug. What to do about a particular gamey tactic...
Fred replied to jgdpzr's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
It should be adressed, but I'm not very concerned about it. I will not use this tactic and I will not play someone who uses this ad infinitum. Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission -

The spotting round should be just this; it should not do any damage whatsoever. If it does damage, it sholud count as a fraction of the barrage. But what we do not need is a unrealistic delay for cancelling a barrage. Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission -
Lloyd, the not used guns are reinforcements. There is a bug with the AI not using reinforcements, that will be addressed in a forthcoming patch. Rank the fixes for the 1.04 patch :)
Fred replied to Claymore's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
Here is what I do not need to see in the next patch: 1. First person view "lock" mode. This is not Quake, so just play "Behind enemy lines", if you like First Person Shooters" 2. Super-ultra-blindfold-me-now-fog-of war As a player, I do need some feedback, that the graphics (because of hardware limitations) do not deliver. 3. "Spend the next 2 years in coding against all possible "gamey" moves". To be honest, the word "gamey" is one word that is overused here. Instead of checking and testing all possible "gamey" tactics, just play the game! I do not want that Charles spend his whole time in countering all "gamey" moves your minds envision. Sometimes life is simple; JUST DON'T do it, if its "gamey". Do not play someone who uses all loopholes to win. As always, other opinions could differ from mine Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission -

I really LOVE this one! Another NICE one from our scenario builder EXTRAORDINAIRE! (btw, Wild Bill...does anyone pays you for it?) I usually play the germans, so close quarter combat is not my preferred one. German tanks excel at long ranges (88 L56, 75 L70...well you know what I mean...) But Bocage terrain is the Queens terrain! And so I used my infantry to setup nice ambushes. Well, the next turn I got my 3 Panthers (others just call them the best medium tank of WW2). I prefer them...do not need no slow Tigers, just gimme these fast slim Panthers! I checked the battleground and decided to defend the center. I therefore assigned 2 Panthers along the center main road up to the bend to the southwest. One single Panther got the job to defend the northern dirt road approach. Then I waited, sound contacts all around me. The first Shermans appeared...the last they saw was the muzzle flash of a 75 L70. Then the AI geared up. Full speed tanks and halftracks rushed my position; way to fast for the slow turrets of my tanks. This was the hour of my Pioneers and Schrecks! Their finest hour! Meanwhile, my cold-as-ice Waffen SS troops stalled the US infantry. Sherman after Sherman explodes...hell has a name .. Le Lorey! After the smoke clears it was a Axis major victory, but I paid for it.... Great one, WBW! Opponents knowledge of immobilised tanks

Does it work if you only disable the sound acceleration, while leaving the graphics acceleration on? Before you test, delete(!) the combatmission prefs file in your combat mission folder. How do you pick up ammo from dead soldiers?
Fred replied to jpinard's topic in Combat Mission Archive #2 (2000)
You don't; this is not implemented. But, your soldiers NEVER run out of ammo completely; they have the status "low". This means they don't fire this often, but they still fire on occasion or if ordered to fire (just with a lower frequency). This is an abstraction for picking up ammo from dead comrades. Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission -
I only have a german windows here, but it should be: right click on your windows dektop, choose "Properties", then "Settings"(?) and click the "Advanced settings"(?) button. There should be a "Performance" tab with a slide bar for the acceleration. Set it all the way to zero (i.e. no acceleration). Fred ------------------ "I got signals, I got readings, in front and behind of us!" - PFC Hudson on LV-426 mission

Maybe a problem with your soundcard (the game initializes the sound just before the 3d-battlefield view comes on the screen). Try to disable all hardware acceleration for your soundcard in the windows systems settings.
