  2. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Originally posted by fytinghellfish: Thanks, you fantastic modeller guys. (I've never made it past the "hammer in frustration portion of the instructions )<hr></blockquote> Don't mistake me for a modeler. I'm a hatchet man. There's a reason firemen use the axe as a symbol I'm leaving Dan to clean up the mess. He can do wonders with Photoshop You might want to try one of those 3-piece resin kits on the last page. Not much hammering neded there [ 01-26-2002: Message edited by: Bullethead ]</p>
  3. Yes, this is a theocracy. But more along the lines of a Lovecraftian cult. Charles is Azathoth, the Center of the Universe, around whom dance the mindless lesser dieties in the Beta Forum. Madmatt is Nyarlathotep, the Herald. Steve is Yog-Sothoth, the Gate and the Key. At first Moon manifested as Cthulhu, but has recently been elevated to Elder God status, probably as Shub-Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young. Kwazy is of course He Who Shall Not Be Named. Everybody else is either an insane cultist, a Mi-Go, or one of the poor doomed souls who oppose them.
  4. I think BTS eventually should develop "CM:X Engine Company". This would be a simulator for training firemen in commanding interior attacks. By the time BTS runs out of theaters, I expect we'll already have building interiors and realistic interior fires modeled. Even field telephone lines, which could be tweaked into hoses.
  5. Makjager has said he's building the Aufklarer 38(t). Also, he says he MIGHT be able to get photos of other people's Flakpanzer 38(t), Casaba, and maybe even Nimrod. So on these, if you see one, snag it just in case he can't get the photos. I'm going to build the BT-5 first, then the T-26. Panzer Leader's got the BT-7 so mine will languish in the closet for some time. Good work, folks. We'll get all these damn things in the game yet
  6. My personal favorites were the fake grog arguments about the M356 or whatever Kitchen Sink and the Japanese Assault Wok. Also that one about the horrible arms race that led to the proliferation of all the types of smileys present today. That one even has Peng in a starring role outside the Cesspool. I think both threads are 2 years gone.
  7. OK guys, Gordon found a link for Romanian and Hungarian stuff. They're 1/76 scale resin and only have like 3 parts (hull, turret, barrel) but they look quite detailed. BTS has said 1/76 scale will work so maybe somebody can pony up for some of this stuff. Kit list here: http://www.brookhursthobbies.com/cromwell_model_productions.htm This has the Hungarian Turan I, Turan II, and Toldi I, plus Romanian R-1 tankette and French R-35. ----------- Sample pictures of this type of kit and finished model here: http://www.brookhursthobbies.com/cromwellpics.htm ------------- BTS has also that you post up if you order something. This will keep us from duplicating too much effort and also will help BTS plan their work.
  8. Come on, lads! Rally round the flag and get something on Dan's list. This is your chance to get more vehicles in the game This site has several versions of the BA-6, the BT-7, the ZIS-42, and GAZ-67, plus the BT-5, T-60, and T-70: http://www.aviapress.com/viewallkits.htm The following site has several versions of the Pz 35(t) which could be modified to look like Turans and such (I think): http://www.internethobbies.com/internethobbies/mpmmodels.html The following site has the BT-5 and T-26: http://www.internethobbies.com/internethobbies/it135scalrus.html The following site has a T-26: http://www.internethobbies.com/internethobbies/rpm135scalru.html I'm having a terrible time finding Hungarian, Romanian, and French stuff, but this should at least round out the Russian side.
  9. I just ordered the T-26, BT-7, and BT-5. The site I found them at also has many other of the Russian things on Kwazy's last list. You might want to check it out: http://www.aviapress.com/viewallkits.htm Here you can find a LOT of obscure things, like the Russian armored cars, light tanks, and halftracks on Kwazy's list. Also, if you're into German WW1 battleships or Russo-Japanese War Russian ships, they got them also
  10. Damn, never heard of anybody hiring their own boss before. Hope he doesn't fire you
  11. Michael Dorosh said: <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Kind of dumb to try it on a tank with no visible air intakes...weren't these located on the back of the tank, under the overhanging armour?<hr></blockquote> Yeah, the M4 and M4A1 Shermans had the air intake under an overhang at the very rear edge of the hull. But Shermans with other engines had some form of intake or radiator up top, with size and location varying with the type of engine. BTW, I find it very interesting that the PzIII had intakes on the front of the hull. That must have sucked on a rollbahn if you weren't leading the convoy
  12. Chad Harrison said: <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>From what I can tell, the CM codes small arms fire/MG fire/ect as a single occurance each time they 'shoot'; ie. it is not continous firing.<hr></blockquote> Yup, that's how it works. Gotta live with it.
  13. JonS said: <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Sheesh. Be off with you. Back into your cave.<hr></blockquote> For your information, I live under a rotten log. They don't have any rock, let alone caves, in this swamp.
  14. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Originally posted by Michael Dorosh: I thought the Romans made sure to put in lots of straight roads, as they were the shortest distance between points and the quickest way to move an Army? Wasn't that also one of Napoleon's legacies to Europe?<hr></blockquote> If you go to England, here and there in various places you can see the remains of Roman roads, that do indeed run arrow-straight to the horizon. The roads you have to travel on cross them repeatedly. If Nappy made straight roads in France, it's unfortunate that he never made it to England .
  15. Damn, I had been watching the original flamewarrior thread steadily approach the locking limits established by St. Peng, and was eagerly anticipating an end to the matter, all flesh having been whipped off the dead horse's spinal column long since. So let me be the first to say, "Hi mom!"
  16. In Zaloga's Red Army Handbook, you can see that the main duty of some members of Russian HMG crews was to fire their personal weapons in close defense of the HMG. They had nothing to do with shooting the MG itself, although I'm sure they helped hump ammo. These guys were called "covering riflemen". Under some of the emergency TO&Es of the dark days of 1941, they were deleted from the crews. So basically, the crew size of Russian HMGs fluctuated during the war. When it was small, it was just the guys needed to shoot the MG. When it was larger, it included guys with rifles to defend the MG.
  17. I was just reading Glantz's book about Operation Mars. During this battle, a mounted Russian cavalry corps was trying to cross a railroad track just as a German armored train came along. How's that for unconventional warfare?
  18. The other day lost a Nashorn to a grunt .50cal at about 300m with a shot from about 10 o'clock. Don't know whether it hit the front or the side (it caused no hit message like shells do), but it got through none the less. This probably came through the gun shield. But it does have the hull of a PzIV... [ 01-19-2002: Message edited by: Bullethead ]</p>
  19. Just a word of caution on this. In larger PBEM battles, the movie file is over 2 megs per turn. So for a 30-turn battle, you're talking about 70-80 megs for a whole-game movie. Those of you with huge HDs and broadband might not have a problem with this, but others.....
  20. <blockquote>quote:</font><hr>Originally posted by Splash: Sorry to cut the quote short but if you wanted this to work you have to have the possibility of hearing more tanks then there actually are. i.e. after the tank has moved away and you begin to hear something from the opposite flank the other marker should remain until it is positively identified as the same tank.<hr></blockquote> Naw, you only get the sound contact while you're actually hearing sounds. When it moves out of earshot, it and all other spotting things tied to that unit disappear. So you have NOTHING to go on unless you keep on hearing it moving around in the enemy rear, but let's assume you don't. So now, you don't know. Is that tank I hear on the other flank the same tank I heard drive away before? Or are there tanks on both flanks? You can't be sure
  21. You only get a sound contact if you can't see the vehicle. And as I understand it, a sound contact is always within a 50m radius of the vehicle's actual location. So the only way to have a sound contact drive into your positions is if the vehicle can get within 50-100m of you and you still not have an LOS. This has happened to me a lot but only at night, in fog, or in thick woods or towns. It's actually not much of a problem in woods or towns because there are only certain paths that the vehicle can be using. Hence, you usually have a very good idea of where it really is in such cases and can set AT ambushes accordingly. It's only when there are open approaches to my position, like I'm in the edge of the woods overlooking a field, that the vehicle can appear at a large angle from where its sound contact was. But in that case, the only way to have a very short LOS across open ground is at night or in bad weather, or both. In which case the vehicle probably won't see my lurking troops anyway. So next turn, when I know where it is for sure, I can still ambush it.
  22. Good point. But to do it, you'd have to be careful so as not to give away too much FOW. Using your example, after the tank disappears on the left you have a "last seen here" marker. This marker instantly goes away the moment the tank reappears on the right. If the game was changed so the tank again gave a sound contact before appearing on the right, I assume the "last seen" marker would disappear then as well. And I know many players would notice this--I sure look for the disappearance of markers as "new" units appear, as I try to figure out what the enemy has. Thus, when the new sound contact showed up on the right, the player would immediately know that tank is no longer lurking in ambush on his left and be able to act accordingly. So if this is going to be changed, IMHO it would have to be done like this: 1. Tank approaching on the left makes sound contact. 2. Tank appears on left. 3. Tank retreats on left, leaving "last seen here" marker. 4. Tank makes sound contact as it retreats from left flank, causing "last seen here" marker to vanish. If you could hear the tank coming, you can hear it going away. 5. As tank moves across enemy rear from flank to flank, assume it moves far enough back that you can't hear it. So now you know nothing about its location. It could still be over on the left, just too far back to hear, or it could be redeploying. OTOH, if it stays close to the front, you should have a sound contact moving from flank to flank. 6. Tank reappears on your right, progressing from sound contact to spotted. You have no idea whether this is the same or a different tank if during redeployment it was far enough back.

Some folks thought they were TOO dirty so he released a "cleaner" version a few days later. But I really liked the original (they just look like they were under the oil smoke clouds in Kuwait) so have retained it. I don't think this version is still up at CMHQ but I can send it to you if you want. It's about 1.2megs
