  1. ONE word POTS It means Plain Old Telephone Service 56k modems are "billed" as 56k because with data compression that is the theoretical BEST performace you can get in opitimal conditions when there is no noise or static at ALL on the line. Any normal phone line usually has enough noise or static on it to slow you down a hair. you should be pretty happy with your 44 kps connection that not bad at all. -tom w
  2. I've had this too In my case there was duplication of reinforcements (I got twice as many) and they were appaernately not seen by my opponent. THe game could continue in PBEM but NEVER in tcp/ip the strange thing is the game allowed us to continue in PBEM EVEN after I had received duplicate reinforments. For me that MUST be a bug  -tom w
  3. he has read and posted to this thread: http://www.battlefront.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=8;t=001495;p=6 I have found one serious issue while playing TCP/IP is that there is a possibility of file corruption when reinforcements arrive, I have found one example of file corruption where my reinforcements arrived in (I was the ALlies) First Clash at Cambes as duplicates, I got twice as many arty spotters as was intended. In this case the game had to be played in PBEM, but we NEVER went back to TCP/IP because it would crash EVERY time BUT the game did manage to play on with the allies having TWICE as many arty spotters in PBEM. I think there is a real issue here but mostly I guess we have for the most part iggnored it and tried to work around it and play the game. TCP/IP is STILL problematic and I think 007 has a good point BUT I do not know how or when any attention from BTS will be paid to this issue as I know they are VERY busy with CMBB?? oh well   -tom w [ February 10, 2002, 08:25 PM: Message edited by: aka_tom_w ]
  4. My understanding is that there is NOTHING you as the player/commander can do to un-bog the AFV. A random chance "die roll" will determine whether the tank becomes immobile (stuck for the rest of the game) or it free's it self. I find it best to leave the tank with a very short "hunt" order forward in the event it un-bogs. The whole bogging question is just a crap shoot really, best advice is not to leave the roads in damp or mud. -tom w
  5. Very Nice Job When and where will it be available I will use it as soon as it is available! great job with the rows of wheat nice colour too! -tom w
  6. Has this been fixed in CMBB? I thought (I could be wrong) that I had read there was a new command in CMBB to abandon crewed weapons... Anyone else remember this? Did they mention the abandon vehicle addition to this command?? just wondering -tom w [ February 09, 2002, 07:44 PM: Message edited by: aka_tom_w ]
  7. Hi Moonshine, OK Thats good enough for me! Thanks for the update -tom w
  8. great thread to resurect but CMBB AFV modeling contest does not close until the end feburary so it may some time (like a few months after the end of feburary) before the game starts to ship. But I too am interested in the opportunity to preorder. (somehow  ) -tom w
  9. the more I read about this one the more I wonder about it... what are the expecations of the those folks who are looking for a FULL battle movie? Do you expect you will be able to look at the battle in a full length move from ANY camera angle and move that camera around the battle field during the full length of the battle?? If so that seems to me to be VERY technically daunting! This may not be relevent but those here dealing with digital video editing will know that 5 minutes of the full frame DVD digital video takes up 1 Gigabyte of disk space  thats ONLY 5 minutes. What I'm suggesting is that this stored file of the entire length of the battle will likely require a GREAT deal of disk space. Technically speaking I suspect that one minute movie that is SO miraculous seems to reside in RAM memory now (I could be wrong about this but I don't see the file being written to the disk (other that the autosave file) anywhere. ON The OTHER hand... Maybe, given that PBEM file sizes are not that large max file size there is only 1-2 megs that my concern about disk space may be totally irrelevant. But still if you want to see a 30 minute movie and the average file size is 1.5 megs (PBEM file says) the resulting full battle movie file should be about 45 megs. This sort of makes sense as other games (for instance Myth II) can record the whole battle in 3D from any angle and the file size there is usually less than 100 megs depending on the length of the battle, so since other 3D RTS games are recording this information it makes sense that is would be technically feasible for CMBB (MAYBE?) BUT it would be TOTALLY cool! your comments ? -tom w
  10. That Sounds Cool! Sure its more Eye candy, and this it would be sort of like CMBB mission creep..... "Well if the 3D polygon model can just sit there... Why can't it take off....? Maybe it could land? OH Maybe it could CRASH land ! Or maybe we could watch it drops its payload Hey Mike, I'm not makeing fun or your proposal at all! I think it would be nice to have other things in the game like aircraft that don't move so we could mod them up and make them pretty too (and then BLOW THEM UP! ) Back your your point though They are no damn good if you can't blow them UP! -tom w [ February 08, 2002, 01:23 PM: Message edited by: aka_tom_w ]
  11. I've played Casey Jones Railyard and it is a GOOD one, I played first time as the Allies against the AXIS AI and it is HARD. Want a good Scenario to test your Allied unit Tactics and Skills??? pick Casey Jones Railyard and play against the German AI as though it is a REAL person and you will be very entertained by the way the scenario plays out! -tom w
  12. try this http://home.arcor.de/tcmhq/ibulge.htm# that should take you right to the new movie made in Flash! VERY nice! -tom w P.S. seems to only work in IE (Explorer) on my Mac  oh well [ February 07, 2002, 10:13 AM: Message edited by: aka_tom_w ]
  13. All I get is a website that hasn't been updated in two months. What is it we are supposed to see here?</font>
  14. Hi Dan Sorry perhaps my first post was not clear. I was attempting to suggest that the it was the Preview button while in the map editor part of the scenario editor that was pushed to "re-render" the 3D model (e.g. a tank) with the newly updated modded texture. I suspect we are both trying to say the same thing my point was I had no idea you could mod a texture insert it into the game and test it while the game was running, I suspect this is because I am on MAC and I doubt I can do this, as I need the MCM3 to convert the .bmp file into the graphic data in CMBO and I doubt I can do this with CMBO open and running. Is that correct? -tom w [ February 06, 2002, 09:05 AM: Message edited by: aka_tom_w ]
  15. Thats good advice, but both these machines are well ventilated and non-dusty. RAM is a-ok as well. Next step is to install (downgrade to) OS 9.1 on both machines and see if that might alleviate the problem. Wondering if there are any Mac users out there that aren't having probs with the Nvidia cards when it comes to tcp/ip play on the larger battles [/QB]</font>
  16. Hi Tiger GREAT to see you back can you say that again? that sounds like a breakthrough! You are suggesting that if you are working on a mod it will update "somehow" automatically in the Map editor in CMBO when you change the .bmp file in your image editor (Photoshop for instance) and then save it, then replace it in CMBO? some how? Can I assume that you do not work on a MAC as we have to do the step of converting the image first with the MCM3 v1.6 1 then loading into the right graphics data file THEN go back to CMBO in the map editor and see if it actually changed when you reload the PREVIEW of the map with the unit on it with the camera in the correct perspective. IS that correct?? On a PC perhaps you can do this faster as you don't mess around with the MCM3 v1.6 1 to do the file conversion? Thanks for the tip !! -tom w [ February 05, 2002, 11:36 PM: Message edited by: aka_tom_w ]
  17. don't forget this one: http://www.afv-uk.net/cmoutpost/ an oldie but a GOODIE! CM Out Post! -tom w
  18. I think I recall that the last time this came up the upper range of visibility in ideal daylight conditions was increased in one of the later patches to 3km (3000 m). This means that an 88 mm or 128 mm main weapon in a tank with an Elite Crew "might" have a slim chance of spotting and hitting a non-hull down stationary target (like a big allied tank like a Sherm) at 3000 m that's not the 4000 m cited above but is about the best that CMBO can do I think. if you are REALLY curious just set up a test firing range in CMBO in the map editor and test if for your self. To the best of my knowledge no unit in CMBO has the ability to spot beyond 3000 m BUT I could be wrong on this one. Any comments? -tom w
  19. Hi jwxpsoon Thanks for your wisdom and insight. Reading posts from those that have actual combat experience is very enlightenly for the fast majority of us who have no idea what you experienced and have no real concept of real combat. Thanks for your post, would you feel free to tell us all a little more about the location and time of the engagment and how it turned out? If not, I hope you won't mind me asking, we are just curious with regard to your experience of being fired at by HMG. Thanks -tom w
  20. Dont' worry to the best of my knowledge you are not missing anything, NONE of us are getting 32 bit colour. Perhaps I should not say this but I would guess that would not be about to actually tell the difference in the game between 16 24 or 32 bit graphics. I understand that ALL graphics and ALL mods in the game are only 16 bit because that was decided to be the lowest common demoninator. do your 16 bit graphics look good? does your game look like shot others have posted? Do your mods look like pictures of mods other have posted on mod web sites? Please rest easy the WHOLE graphic world of CMBO is 16 bit to the best of my knowledge. (Someone REAL knowledgeable about graphics and mods in CMBO feel free to correct me if I'm off base on this one) -tom w
  21. Maybe thats like a HINT for BTS Hey BTS, when CMBB goes on sale maybe you could drop the price of CMBO?? maybe just a little like $30.00 US instead of $45.00 US? Its just a suggestion -tom w
  22. well I might suggest that for those of you waiting for CMBB to arrive there has been no actually shipping date announced It is possible you could be waiting until April or May 2002 for delivery (hopefully not) Why not just order CMBO now and play it? Just my thoughts (Hint: you cannot really be formally assimilated by the CM Borg until you have been throught the trials and tribulations of ordering CMBO and then Waiting and waiting for it to actually arrive, so might as well order it now and begin the ordeal ) -tom w
  23. Thats REALLY beautiful Nice Screen shot! When Oh when can the rest of us mere mortals gets this stuff!!!?? -tom w
  24. why do the words "gamey recon" spring to mind so quickly??? (you know, like gamey recon use of jeeps, only FASTER and harder to hit?) -tom w
