  1. Of course the ability of the Soviets to concentrate solely on weapons production because we were supplying them with nearly everything else didn't hurt. And before you get too down on the Sherman, even the early models were still a match for the bulk of German armor. The Uberpanzers were outstanding but not war winning (obviously ). For future reference, if you want a discussion just ask. There is no need to try to tick people off in order to get a response. If there is one thing this forum doesn't lack it is people willing to give their opinion. Sometimes it is hard to get them to shut up! [ January 09, 2003, 03:46 AM: Message edited by: Sgtgoody ]
  2. This game is giving me a taste for cold food. Cook time 1 minute, stand time 3 hours just doesn't seem to work. Para Where do you get those Graemlins?!
  3. Sgt. Emren We also had a not so happy event here. An M1 during winter night ops drove into a large water filled hole and got stuck. Water began filling up the driver's compartment but because of the way the turret was turned they couldn't get the man out through the turret and they couldn't get the tank out of the hole for almost two days. Sorry I don't know the soldier's name though, they didn't release it. Back to the thread... While most of us know that there are a lot of variables to tanks falling, rolling, sliding, what have you, down cliffs and off bridges, I think most of us would be happy with just a general, if you fall off something in an AFV you will be out for the fight type rule. While it may not happen often the fact that it has happened and can be recreated without too much difficulty shows that this is a valid issue. I think going the other way and not allowing things to fall at all would be even more undesirable than now.
  4. Foxbat All regular Russian infantry are called Motor-Rifle Regiments. The Russians regard BTR troops (which is a decent APC rather than a fancy truck) as light troops because they lack the support that the BMP troops have. By doctrine all frontline troops are supposed to be BMP mounted while second line troops will get what they can. The MRR that we replicated was a BMP regiment with about 120 BMPs (if you count all the HQ and scout tracks) and 30 T80s. Much of the naming convention is traditional dating back to the Great Patriotic War. M. D. I haven't decided what to do my thesis over yet but I think it will be on the Battle of Hosingen. To me this was the pivital battle in the Bastogne sector. If K Co 3/110 INF and B 103 Eng hadn't held as long as they did Bastogne would never have happened but Bastogne gets all the publicity. I actually already have my disertation decided. I did a paper on the Combined Bomber Offensive and the perception that it was a failure vs its actual accomplishments. I am going to expand it into a full blown disertation. Alas I won't even be able to start my thesis for at least a year.
  5. Good point but then one must remember that that was the plan all along. That 100,000 allowed under Versailles (spelling? Sorry to lazy to look it up) was intended, by the Germans not the Allies , to form the cadre of an expanded army. While Germany and Hitler are often portrayed as incredible inovators they made some very classic mistakes. Like most dictators Hitler went for the shiny toys and was unconcerned about the more mundane aspects of building an army. You know, I came to this forum to find help on CM. Little did I know I would find intellectual debate as well. I think I am going to reference this site when I start work on my Master's Thesis. Nice to find people who really give a darn about something.
  6. It shouldn't be too hard to enable this in the engine. It could be something as simple as if a vehicle looses more than X number of meters in less than Y meters of movement then it is judged to have fallen and should have about a 90 percent chance of an immediate immobilization and crew shock as well as a good chance for a gun hit. I won't say it should be 100 percent because I have seen tanks take nasty spills and then drive away once the crew decided that they were still alive. I think this would add an extra strategic option to the game. You know, something like hmmm.. should I risk trying to bust something through that parking lot on the bridge or do I risk falling off or what about that narrow ledge can I sneak around there or is it too dangerous. I would also love to be able to blow bridges but that is for a different thread . All in all CM does an outstanding job at modeling almost all the normal events we expect to see on a battlefield (if you can call a battlefield normal ) but there are some unexpected things which can have a fairly large impact. Another OPFOR story: While we were fighting the Dutch they had borrowed some of the Bundeswehr's Leopard II A6 tanks. During the rotation one was rolling along a narrow path on the top of a retaining wall for a retention pond (the Germans build them for flood control). The rotation was during the winter and it was pretty muddy but the pond was empty. The loader was in the TC hatch because the TC was in the loaders compartment to write an Op-Order (because there is more room on that side of the tank). Well either the driver wasn't paying attention or the path got to narrow, regardless the tank slid down the wall and hit on its side throwing the loader out of the hatch and into the pond. The tank then proceded to turn turtle with the turret landing squarely on the loader's legs. Amazingly though the mud on the bottom of the pond was so thick that the tank just pushed his legs about a foot into the mud. He got some bruising but other than that was perfectly fine (physically at least ). Everyone inside the tank was bruised up but ok as well. Ah the joys of army life. 7. More confusing when you note that American halftrack mounted infantry was "Armored Infantry."
  8. It would make an interesting mod to see the crew trying to shove that thing down the barrel.
  9. Lt Bull I think you are dead on about the turn radius. Maybe the path indicator could change color if a point is within the turn radius much like the LOS or Targeting line. While not allowing everything to turn on a dime is more realistic there has to be a better way of modeling the turn radius than having vehicles endanger themselves needlessly. After all even if we don't know the turn radius of a KV one would assume that at least the crew does.
  10. As you said there are a lot of other factors involved. If I do want to just get there I will use fast (speed is armor) especially if someone else can cause the Stug to button up and it has no other support. I usually don't like to rush AFVs unless the situation is very favorable but rather prefer to set ambushes. The way they took out the MG in PR was idiotic. They had a sniper that never missed and several covered routes, there was no need to turn it into a shooting gallery. [ January 08, 2003, 03:35 AM: Message edited by: Sgtgoody ]
  11. That is just it. They are in a mineFIELD and unless they planted it they don't know if they are on the edge or in the middle or even if they just happened to hit one that someone dropped. The sneaking command doesn't mean that they are now just moving crouched over, it means that they are now looking for trip wires or the prongs of a bouncing betty or signs of disturbed earth. They have also probably gone into a single file and are trying very hard to step in the footprints of the man in front of them. Nobody is going to be moving very fast when they know that anywhere they put their foot can kill them.
  12. What really stank about it was having to reload, especially on a vehicle.
  13. Put yourself in their shoes. You have just seen one of your buddies turn into a cloud of red mist and some moron is telling you to run willy-nilly through the woods. Soldiers are not stupid (well most of them ) and are not going to will try to carry out the intent of the orders (ie to get to their final location) without getting themselves reduced to paste. The switch to a sneak order simulates the fact that they are now on their hands and knees trying to find a safe path through the killing ground.
  14. The truest statement on any of these boards .
  15. How about the Hiroshima powerup that allows you to have a pinpoint naval barrage (I'm talking 16 inchers here) for every flag you take.  [ January 08, 2003, 02:02 AM: Message edited by: Sgtgoody ]
  16. Peter, I don't know about CA but the weather here in Europe changes faster than movie stars changes spouses  . Seriously though, I know at least from Poland westward the weather changes from one extreem to another regularly. Maybe some of our Russian companions can let us know about it further east  . For a couple of examples, in Berlin I left the Barracks in bright sunlight and by the time I reached the end of the parking lot (about 200m) a snowflake hit me in the face and the sky was solid overcast. Another time we rolled a Regimental attack here in Hohenfels in 6 inches of snow, and hour later all of it was gone and the ground was a solid sea of mud. Stuff like that happens all the time here. It would be very realistic to add variable weather and visibility. Anyone who doesn't think a barrage of artillery raises a dust cloud has never seen one. All the smoke and dust on the battlefield (especially in summer or when it rains) kind of blends into a low grade haze that can severly degrade long range optics. Of course the dust problem isn't as bad when it is muddy but there is still some. As it is now the battlefield is just a bit too static.
  17. Interestingly it is the term "Motorized" that has survived to modern usage despite the fact that modern Russian infantry is most definitly mechanized. The standard Russian unit of manuever is the MRR or Motorized Rifle Regiment. Anyway back to the past. The terms define strategic mobility more than anything else. As has been stated real, or leg, infantry had to rely on others for strategic mobility (trains, other people's trucks, etc.) while motoized infantry had their own strategic but not tactical transport (well you can take trucks on the battlefield but it tends to be a short trip ). Mechanized troops had both strategic as well as tactical transportation in the form of their armored halftracks. Once in combat, however, all infantry still fought the same although the more transportation assets you have the more support weapons you can bring to the party. All types used trains for really long movements through friendly territory (or at least conquered territory) both for speed and to save wear and tear on the equipment (armored vehicles especially will break down from just being driven not to mention eating a ton of fuel). The biggest flaw of the Wehrmacht was that it had gold for fighting formations and crap for support. [ January 08, 2003, 01:36 AM: Message edited by: Sgtgoody ]
  18. For the 37mm the HC round looked like a Panzerfaust and was loaded like a huge rifle grenade. I don't have the exact specs (anyone?) but it made the gun look like a giant Q-tip. It was effective if it hit something but wasn't very acurate except at close range. The 0 penetration is probably because the target isn't fully identified. The computer is just giving you a heads up on what you might be facing.
  19. Never mind. Just answered my own question, yes it works.
  20. Just a quick question about the txt files. If I cut and paste them to another txt file with the same name will they still work? Whenever I download one that isn't zipped the email server just prints it out rather than saving it to disk. Will the cut and paste thing work or is zipping necessary? Thanks James
  21. I have noticed a couple of times in almost every battle that some of my tanks seem to be doing doughnuts at the end of their movement orders. They go through multiple waypoints without trouble but go into orbit on the last one. This happens in all types of terrain and most often without any enemy contact. It only happens with single vehicle movement orders. Has anyone else seen anything like this?
  22. I have noticed that the AI doesn't seem to coordinate its attacks as well as CMBO. I have also noticed that sometimes I find my tanks turning circles around the last waypoint of a move command. Maybe I should report this in the general forum.
  23. Why bother with manuever against tanks that don't want to kill you! Just think of it as digital bumper cars.
  24. Yeah, just tried it as the Russians. Got my @ss handed to me. I am going to try again. I think I know what I have to do.
