  1. Heh... I usually try to clean out some of the older and less important announcements from the GF, but since announcements from (almost) all the other topics are cross-posted here, it's the nature of the beast that there are a lot of news on top of the GF. Not going to change that, even if only to serve as a reminder where you are and what we do for a living ;)

  2. Looking at what you wrote, DEP shouldn't be the problem, as that normally throws an error popup, and newer CPUs have a much better and less buggy implementation of it.

But Norton is nasty, especially if you have that Internet Security package, and "shutting it off" may not be as easy as you think. The only way I got it to actually stop messing with my PC is to uninstall it, and even that proves difficult.

You do know about our www.battlefront.com/helpdesk? Tjere is a Knowledgebase and a way to submit a support ticket. You should do that.

Also, check if you have the file runservice.exe in your C:\Windows folder. If it's not there, then it was blocked during the installation, and the usual suspects are "User Access Control", "Anti-virus", DEP, in this order.

  3. Thats pretty crap what about looking after us Brits with a base n brits bundle?

As the number of modules and games increases that we sell, anybody will likely want their own personal bundle, and there is only so much we can (or want to) offer.

Having said that, you can actually pretty much make your own bundle (at least as far as hardgoods go): when you buy more than on product, you pay only $1 S&H for each additional product. If you buy two games, you essentially get a $9 discount.

The patch is not an issue if he buys an addon. Is this a marketing strategy?

No, it isn't, although like someone else pointed out, it seems to have become the norm. Patch support seems to be lacking from many retail partners these days. No idea why that is the case to be honest. Perhaps, in a world of an increasing number of digital delivery platforms, DRMs etc., patching becomes more complex due to the variety of compatibility issues.

Anyway, i want to get the brits module and it looks like the only way to get that is through the BF store.

    Correct.

  4. No, we do not release games on those platforms. They require code-side changes to release games with them.

We have our own platform, it's right here :) It may be not as fancy as the others (yet) but other than some frontend multiplayer features (some of which we plan to implement on our end sooner or later) these systems do not offer anything else we're interested in.

  5. Just need to get the word out.

That's where you come in :) Battlefront's best and strongest marketing tool have always been its fans. This was true already back in the time when there were actually wargaming magazines and websites worth to be called as such and the mainstream gaming sites were geared towards PC games; and it is even more true now where most of the gaming websites cater to consoles, and the few "wargaming" outlets left out there are not really worth the title (perhaps the only exception I can think of right now being Armchair General).

Truth is that from our experience the biggest one block of fans is already right here, at Battlefront.com. Out there it's very difficult to find them, and it's impossible to do so cost-effectively (i.e. via ads). In the past there used to be a few reviewers who provided editorial coverage, but unfortunately that has also largely faded away with time. Few reviewers out there have a clue about what CMSF is...

Funny enough, despite these difficulties, Battlefront.com still manages to grow. Slowly but steadily. No clue how we do it .:-) Well, the only explanation I have is that one of you guys tells his friend who tells his friend who tells his friend... :)

  6. SFI had the license to the game for a while now. It was sold from their website and I think even via Steam for some time. Our cooperation with SFI however has been terminated, and I guess they're exercising their sell-off period right now. No problem about getting it there but don't come to us for support :)

  7. The link to Battlefront.com for patch 1.02 seems defunct. ftp://ftp.battlefront.com/pub/patche...v102_Patch.exe

I just clicked on the link and it's working fine. What problem do you have? Is your browser capable of passive ftp connections at all?

    For IE users:

Internet Explorer: To make this change in Internet Explorer go to the "Tools" menu and click on "Internet Options". In the "Internet Options" window, click on the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down to find an option labeled "Use Passive FTP", and check or uncheck the box.

Chrome does not support ftp at all.

  8. What I love is that this game creates wonderfully unscripted moments. Moments that pit crews, technologies and happenstance together in a myriad of ways that result in eye-popping and original outcomes.

    Thanks BFC.

Thanks Gpig, this is a great line, may I borrow it from you sometime? :)

For me it very nicely sums up what the REAL difference is between CMSF (actually, make that CM) and most other games (not just wargames) out there. It's a conceptual difference and sometimes just subtle. But once I realized that it's there it's difficult to go back to the scripted movie-like solve-this-level games that you usually see from the big labels.

  9. Hello John, your post didn't go unnnoticed. Here is a response from the devs I am posting on their behalf:

I'll start with the last question of the anti-ship defense. There are no ships in PT Boats that are large enough to have anti-torpedo bulges (also known as anti-torpedo blisters). The biggest ships in the game are German cruisers Admiral Hipper and Blücher.

    http://www.battlefront.com/images/stories/PTBoats/image002.jpg

During the Norway invasion Blücher sustained more than 20 hits from the land artillery (the Norwegians were shooting from the distance less than 500 m, basically a point-blank range), but the cruiser sunk after two hits from the land torpedo guns. So there is no need to talk about the anti-torpedo defense of destroyers and transports.

    image004.jpg

Crew protection is a bit more complicated issue. Our system is, in fact, a compromise, as it does not take into account the shell movement inside the hull and the possible damage to the crew done by hull fragments.

Nevertheless, the idea that the crew has more chances to survive the small arms fire below the deck is true. It is obvious for a large ship, as even a civilian craft has a steel sides no less than 0,5 inches thick and several steel partitions.

Even the crew of a PT boat is not so defenseless as it may seem. Of course, a 20mm Oerlikon or a 40mm Bofors can pierce the boat from side to side. But the bullet or the shell still has to find a crewman. For example, the free-board of an 80-feet Elco boat is approximately 24 m long and 1 m high. So an enemy gunner has to shoot at random, covering the area of 24 m x 2 m. Besides, not all of the boat compartments are lightly protected. For example, the engine-room of a PT boat is constructed so that the crew is between two engines.

    image006.jpg

The photo of the engine-room of a German Schnellboot shows that the crew is protected not only from machine-gun fire but from shells as well. Besides, many PT boats had special armor plating.

    image008.jpg

For example, Elco boats, Schnellboots and Komsomolets boats had armored superstructures (the armored cabin of a Schnellboot is clearly different from a regular one). Komsomolets boats and Fairmiles had armor plating that protected the gunners from small arms fire.

    image010.jpg

And it is not all. The hull of a Schnellboot was into parts by 7 partitions. Four of them were made of steel, and three – from an aluminum-copper-magnesium alloy. Komsomolets boats also had several metal partitions.

One might think that an 7-12 mm armour plating does not provide an sufficient level of protection. But I would like to remind you that the same armour had the famous IL-2 that was practically invulnerable to the cannon fire from the most directions even from several dozens of meters – much to the surprise of the German pilots.

In any case, German boats often went into action against superior forces and returned without heavy casualties. The photo shows that the German crewmen were not too worried by the heavy fire.

  10. While it's not a lot of dough, it is pretty pathetic... I download all of my games online precisely so that I don't have to keep a CD around and I can download whenever I want for convenience sake...

This is the first time I've ever seen this 'expiring'....

Then you're not doing much online shopping for software, because only few companies are offering "digital storage" and if they do, then usually only for a limited time and at an extra cost (sometimes quite a whopping amount, too). With us, you can download for up to 365 days or up to 10 times at no extra charge. But to be honest, this is really mainly needed for people who have problems with their connections. Usually, you don't have to download more than once, since you can then copy the file(s) you downloaded to disc or anywhere (we are not using any kind of copy protection).

"Download" is just another delivery method like "mail", and once you have the game, it's "delivered". Expecting it to be re-delivered on demand anytime you want and as often as you want is unreasonable.

Perhaps we'll offer this kind of service/storage for your games at some point. But if so, then it certainly won't be for free.

The one-time (!) $5 "re-buy" is a service to our customers that have forgotten to backup (or never thought of doing it) because so many have requested it, and we didn't want to have them to pay for the same thing the full price twice. But after you get your $5 re-download, PLEASE BACK UP YOUR game.

  11. Well, if that is so then there must be a bug or bugs somewhere. As the testers will be able to assure you, and I can myself as well, the AI has been putting up a heck of a fight during testing. So much so that from what I recall the Elite AI had to be toned down in aggressiveness somewhat. Ask Steve what he thought about the AI during our little test AAR game when ND had to come to his rescue :)

  12. PS. I notice the sale price for the basic version says $35 but the delivery options say $45. is that a mistake?

No, just a little confusing in that the dropdown menu shows you the unadjusted price, but once you click it, it will show you the correct (lower) price. Hopefully one day I'll get around to actually fixing this. It's not a bug as such, but it sure is confusing.

  13. Well, Mike, looks like your responses are not parsed correctly into the helpdesk (there is a script doing that), or perhaps they are not reaching us at all. Instead of sending emails again and again, how about if you log in to your account at www.battlefront.com/helpdesk (the link is in the auto-reply pointing out how you can check for your ticket status online) and reply directly from there? No email involved. Which is the primary reason why we have set up this system in the first place.
