TacAI doesn't fire at surrendering soldiers?

Recommended Posts

As has been said before, the victor writes the history ;)

Ugh I hate that line, its so damn untrue half the time.

I remember on Turnballs stand map I got a bunch of Germans to surrender just in front of one of my squads position. Their own commander proceeded to drop an artillery barrage on them which resulted in a big LOL from me and 3-4 MIA being turned into 3-4 KIA/WIA. Makes me think of the SS in the Falaise pocket who fired on their less than resolute Wehrmacht brethren surrendering to Allied troops, though in game I am sure it was just a barrage that fell short.

I'm not 100% entirely sure that surrendering troops won't get shot. I'm 98% sure they won't but not 100% sure. :) I recall in CMBO Bulge timeframe SS (or whatever they were called in the game) would merrily shoot down surrendered GIs Malmady-style. Next module SS are coming into the game. Will BFC 'dial-up' the brutality to correspond with the force type? Polish 'Commonwealth' versus SS = take-no-prisoners'?

I've seen lots of surrendering guys get killed, but always because they were caught in the middle of a firefight or caught a stray round. Not long after I took this video there was a German surrendering between two hedgerows. I had a squad taking cover behind one, and the Germans had a squad behind the other. This poor bloke got cut down by his own men as they were shooting at my guys.

But, this was the first time I'd ever seen a troop throw up his hands, say "I surrender!", then get BLOWN AWAY. It would have been interesting to see if it had been a rifle or a grenade, but when it's a tank from point blank range... wow.

In defence of the M5 crew it would have been almost impossible to see the person clearly, certainly wouldn't be able to hear him and he had just been lying down so you wouldn't know if the hands were raised because he'd just thrown a mine.

Perhaps it is not a good idea to surrender to a tank.

we Americans are a little vague on the details of the Conventions

Not all of you. But it seems like the only people I come across who are vague on this point are Americans. S'not your fault, though, since it seems like it's official US Army policy to convey the impression that the Conventions are a nuisance that can be ignored with impunity.

The US Army wants you to think you have officially-encouraged war criminals in your midst. Weird, but there you go.

Convention (I) for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded and Sick in Armed Forces in the Field. Geneva, 12 August 1949.

Chapter III. Medical Units and Establishments

Art. 19. Fixed establishments and mobile medical units of the Medical Service may in no circumstances be attacked, but shall at all times be respected and protected by the Parties to the conflict. Should they fall into the hands of the adverse Party, their personnel shall be free to pursue their duties, as long as the capturing Power has not itself ensured the necessary care of the wounded and sick found in such establishments and units.

Art. 22. The following conditions shall not be considered as depriving a medical unit or establishment of the protection guaranteed by Article 19:

(1) That the personnel of the unit or establishment are armed, and that they use the arms in their own defence, or in that of the wounded and sick in their charge.

(2) That in the absence of armed orderlies, the unit or establishment is protected by a picket or by sentries or by an escort.

Or perhaps if you want to be sure that your surrender thingame works out well for you, try it before the shooting starts.

All the best

Eastern Front. US Civil War.

Yes and who is it that allowed those histories to be written?

I expect that the "Victors" in the west would rather the German side of things as far as the Eastern Front goes, given the Cold War and all that.

Russian history of course reads somewhat differently as their victors wrote their version.

Determining winners and losers in the US Civil War is a challenge in itself, much less the correct turn of events to be believed.
