AI Independence

Recommended Posts

I am not sure just how much initiative the AI is supposed to have. In my latest game I had two MG set up in bocage, providing covering fire across an open field. Next thing I know they have decided they are bored or something and both are trudging across the field, straight at the enemy and are all knocked out within a minute. How do I stop this kind of dumb behavior?

Could it be that you accidentally double clicked its parent HQ and gave them a movement order, thereby accidentally moving all the units under its command? Just a thought. Happens to me.

I doubt it: the HQ was part of the suicide mission, and I am pretty certain I told them all to stay put.

I am sure that you accidentially gave them a group order. I had this happen to me quite a bit also.

I have seen this as well.

The AI are not self aware ;) As COOL as that would be, they should not be advancing without your orders, but they will break and retreat on there own if they rout.

Those MG guys you are talking about, would never advance like that without an order from you.

(yes it has happened to me before as well, but a closer look at the situation indicated to me I had accidentally group selected them.)

This is almost always a case of forgetting to deselect a unit before selecting another one. For example, if I have a unit selected and forget to deselect, then I SHIFT+LEFT CLICK DRAG select another group of units, the unit I forgot to deselect will actually be added to the selection.

I still do this quite often!
