Smallish new feature bone

Recommended Posts

As of a week or so ago CMx2 now has a different system for Campaign saves. It is now possible to "upgrade" a Campaign while in progress to take advantage of fixes to scenarios not yet played. This allows for tweaking/fixing Campaigns after release without forcing people to have to restart from the beginning. If a player saves before each battle played then he can "upgrade" and restart from any of those points.

As a bonus feature, the new format allows the saves to be much smaller than they currently are. This makes storage of multiple Campaigns easier on harddrive space and greatly eases bug reporting because save game file size should be small enough for everybody's ISPs.

There are more improvements like this on the way, but this one will for sure be available when we release v1.20 along with the Brit Module.

Yeah, there always is a chance that a save will work with a new patch. That's because very frequently the stuff that changes is very situationally dependent. Small patches tend to be safer than larger ones. Now it doesn't matter :D

No effect on PBEM size. The old Campaign save included all of the data for all battles in the campaign. Now it's just keeping track of current and some past stuff. PBEM files only ever keep track of their immediate needs so there won't be any savings to gain there. However... Charles did mention something about an additional space savings due to consolidating some data storage, however I assumed he meant relating to Campaigns. But maybe he meant overall. If so, great :D

Probably not in any noticeable way. The bulk of the load time is to get the graphics, sounds, and the current map loaded. The type of stuff that got left out or consolidated is reference data which was either called up or not depending on the point of the save. Therefore I'm not expecting much difference at all.
