The group Dan Brown missed

But what he writes in the "Kettler" threads is just so offensive to the thinking man

It seems to me that you should therefore just feel superior and leave it be. After all in a country devoted largely to creationism, Christianity, along with cult followings for Buffy, Heroes and other realistic fare it does seem rough to pick on one guy for bringing us stuff that is as believable as Buffy is*.

*And often more believable

JK does actually post a lot of interesting stuff on military matters but then a lot of his critics do not appear on the CM1 forums so they are probably unaware, or do not care to give credit for that.

And, you are not too observant DT, for as one of his strongest critics, I have praised him on the many military items he posts about, ...

Both you and DT must have very low standards if you think the dross he posts on WWII is any more useful than the nonsense he posts in the GF. Anyone with five minutes experince on Google can come up with the same stuff, and anyone with half an ounce of common sense would filter out the loony stuff he breathlessly presents as useful and/or relevant.

Nazi bases in Antarctica?

V2 bases near Cherbourg? Never mind that the rockets won't fit out the holes ...

Maybe 1 in 10 of his Googled links is useful and relevant, but what's your time spent trying to figure out which one that is worth?

I'd love to spend time wading through some of John's links, if only to ensure my world view is still something I perceive to be valid. Unfortunately his hit ratio on stuff that is actually interesting, credible and contains even the merest scintilla of stuff that is considered acceptable as evidence by anyone with any kind of scientific background is so low that I just don't have the time or energy to do it... Hence my attempts to persuade JK to a) Stick to one point in a thread and B) target his evidence more effectively...

i don't believe I've attacked JK directly at any time, I am prepared to take issue with his methodology though, which I see as, frankly, abject...

At one point, I was pretty sure Mr. Kettler was just trying to see how far (out) he could go and make us all bite.

But considering the sheer volume of nutcase theories he brings up, I'd say he's serious. Nobody spends that much time digging hairbrained schemes out of Teh Intarweb just to take the piss. And if he does, then I'd call that a serious mental issue in its own right.

JonS,

Have you read either book? Peter Connolly is a recognized expert in Classical Warfare.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Connolly

I own both his HANNIBAL and ROMAN ARMY books, and they are excellent, being information dense and readable by nonspecialists.

John Warry's book is published by the well known University of Oklahoma Press, the book has a 5 star Amazon rating, and LIBRARY JOURNAL said of his book:

"A masterful and remarkably appealing treatment of the military science of ancient Greece and Rome. Retired Cambridge scholar Warry assembled a powerful team of artists, cartographers, and other experts to produce what is easily the finest one-volume treatment of the subject available today....Highly recommended."

As anyone with access to the book can readily confirm, there is considerable discussion of Carthage and other matters Punic.

IOW, JonS, once again you have let your unreasoning hatred of me make YOU look like a FOOL! You clearly haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about and are merely indulging in your customary attacks on me, self-evidently by carefully picking and labeling your "evidence" so as to diminish and discredit me. Naturally, you do nothing to actually advance the discussion of the topic, preferring to hijack my thread.

luderbamsen,

One of these days I'll have to gin up something for you of high grade disinformation nature, just so you won't be bored by mere scary reality. Please list elements you wish to see covered, that I might better accommodate your entertainment needs. Bear in mind, though, that all disinformation contains some element of truth. That's how you get people to swallow it. BTW, it's "harebrained" as in the brain of a rabbit, rather than as you listed. That, at least, is true for U.S. usage. YMMV.

Pak_43,

What would you like to discuss, in a separate thread, please? I am catholic (note lower case "C") in my interests and can discuss just about anything to one degree or another. Do you have anything constructive to add to the Legatus discussion which this thread is supposed to be about, as opposed to meticulous catalogs of my supposed defects?

All,

As for the actual thread topic, I've now read a great deal on the Legatus official site (cracked up over Cardinal O'Connor's call to Catholic duty, given his track record) and have tracked down the excruciatingly detailed Reinhardt thread that the YouTube video is based on. Call it the advanced course in book falsification, deliberate nonreporting of grotesque fiscal irregularities, stock market manipulation, the takeover of our health care system and much, much more. The merciless catalog of global financial market skulduggery through the ages is astounding all by itself, and I can tell you several humdingers are missing, even so.

Will close this with the strong suggestion that anyone seriously interested in the financial and temporal horsepower of the Church read Tupper Saussy's mind-boggling study RULERS OF EVIL. Sadly, that man of many talents is no longer with us.

Regards,

John Kettler

Yes. That's it. I look like a fool.

Connolly's book is nicely illustrated ... but many of the illustrations are of fictional troops - e.g. the pikemen and the armoured horses ... apart from that though it's short on real substance and high on pretty pictures.

Not really good as a reference work.

"Hannibal and the Enemies of Rome" is a 30 year old, prettily illustrated, childrens book. Heck, the title doesn't even make sense. Connolly may be 'a recognised expert' on classical warfare, and he may have written some great books on the subject - so why not reccomend one of those, rather than this piece of eye candy?

*sigh*

To be fair, I didn't comment on Warry's book. However, that does highlight the problem of trying to get anything useful or coherent out of JK; namely that you have to sift through so much dross that you'd have been better off using Google yourself, rather than have him do it for you.

Another Weasel Tactic, right Jon?

He throws up SOOO MUCH Flak, he can't help but ACCIDENTALLY hit a target...and Google is his Flak Battery - certainly no internal guidance system of any worth hits the target.
