Most infantrymen will not have a pistol, unless they are a platoon sergeant or above, a crew served weapons team member, a driver, scout-sniper, radio operator, etc...

My infantry company had extra pistols in its armory that we issued out for OIF 1. For OIF 2 every member of my CA team had a pistol and a rifle. We also had a SAW and an M-240G. Ummm, we practised armed civil affairs.

But your average infantry rifle squad, Army and Marine, will not have anyone with a pistol. Just real weapons.

Yeah, no one in my company carried an M9, except the CO, but he had an M4 also.

Out of interest, how common are the below items in the field?

-kneepad(s)

-pistol holster or thigh mag rig

-individual radio

They were faily common on my tour. Alot of us had drop pouches for our thighs (its a great way to carry 40mm) The knee pad ratio was fairly common, depending on the mission, if you are going on a patrol or a raid, you take knee pads. For individual radios we had 3 iComs per squad, for the SQD LDR nad TM LDRs.

Thanks guys.

One thing that I have seen for sure is a "violation" of standard TO&E in terms of leadership. According to the paperwork many leaders and specialists are supposed to be armed with pistols only. The theory being that it weighs them down and nobody is going to shoot at them anyway. Right. From what I can tell nearly everybody that was supposed to be assigned a pistol only also has a M4.

Angryson... one question I had was about ammo for the M4 of someone like your CO. Did he have just have a few mags or did he load up more like a rifleman? My guess is he'd tote around a reduced load, say 3-4 mags instead of 7 or 8.

I always carried 13 mags when I was in Kuwait, but I bought myself two extra ammo pouches for just such a purpose.

Everyone carried a minimum of 7 mags, CO included. As Hellfish pointed out, alot of us carried more. I started with 13 but I cut it down to 9. 9 felt just right for me.

Thanks again! As is always the case, the real ammo loadout is always more than what it says on paper ;) I'll make an adjustment to bump up the loadout for the "non standard" M4 toting soldiers. I already had higher loads for everybody else. Not 13 mags though!

I assume, Angryson, that you cut back to 9 after you realized you really didn't hate yourself as much as you thought? Or was it sorta like an alcoholic finally recognizing his problem "I went to search a house and I got stuck in the bathroom. I don't know how I got in there, but no matter what I did I could not get out. My buddies had to use an Urban Breach Kit and some C4 to get me out. That is when I knew I was carying too much stuff."

I think guys carried more ammo on their gear for OIF1 than they did for OIF2. I know I did. One reason maybe because I knew I just did not need to carry 10 mags of 5.56 the second time, but also that the mission had changed. 90% of the firefights in a COIN environment are going to be real short as compared to offensive combat operations. Fallujah 2 and some of the other assaults are the exception and not the rule.

But for this scenario, guys would be loaded out. Maybe not 13 mags like motivated Angryson, but they would carry a few more mags than the issued 7 as long as they could get them. Plus an extra bandolier. The MOLLE ammo bandolier was real popular since it could carry extra loaded mags and is much more durable than the canvas 5.56 bandolier out of the ammo can.

HA! That's it exactly!

Not really a fan of the bandolier, canvas or MOLLE, they flop around too much for me.

I know everyone would like realistic looking troops but I'm all in favour of bending the rules a bit if it makes the game aesthetically more pleasing. To this end, IMHO the US soldier on the "Shock Force" logo would look a lot better with a few extra pieces of equipment such as knee-pads and the like. It is a game after all, and who's to say what could be standard dress in 2007!

I don't think that stryker soldiers would ever carry bandoleirs of any kind. We did only for dismounted operations during OIF 1, when we were loaded for bear. No one carried them all the time or for OIF 2. But for offensive ops, like when Fallujah heated up, the MOLLE bandoliers were broken out and put in guys packs, since everyone was dug in around Fallujah.

Its just an option.
