I want to create a fansite.. What would be some good ideas?

Recommended Posts

You might have a good market. I've found most CM sites to be rather lame.

To start, I'd like to see a good bibliography of outside sources listed (start with this sites library, but it's limited).

A strong section on tactics (my knowledge of "non-gamey" infantry tactics is terrible, and I'm sure other people need help too)

List of units and what they're good for (there are sites that list every unit, but I haven't seen one that says what to do with it). I know some tanks, but I couldn't tell you what a number of others items or infantry squads in the game are ideally supposed to do (and judging by that ISU-122 vs. Panzer IV discussion, others don't either).

All I need now is a free webhosting service. I used to go with Freeservers.com, but you can hardly even get the site to open up when getting to it and registering the first time through without getting a "page cannot be displayed" error is a miracle. Any suggestions?

Well, you can't press the "back" button to return to a previous page for one. Search engines have a hard time indexing them for another. Bookmarking the page in the wrong place can also cause you to enter the site "frameless", thus you have no navigation at all unless it's on the page itself.

Other than that, frames are kewl. ;)

Edit: Should clarify, you can't navigate with the "back" button if the frames are not done properly.

Ignus,

Remember the key question: What is your Differentiator ? What can you do on your web-site that others won't do or can't do ? Something which you need to be king of hill at.

Some sites are very good at Scenarios or specialised in Mods. Some are very good at After-Action Reports (AAR) while others go for History.

What is your differentiator then ?

Well, I have not really seen a site specialising in CM:BBBabes , so that's one possible suggestion.

But you may have problems with bandwidth coz nothing attracts audience more than guns, war, vodka and babes mixed together.

Having a specific niche is usually better than a General site covering everything.

Remember, Jack of All Trades, Master of None.

That will cost you 2 cents, Please.

Great. Just when I thought I'd covered all possible masturbation fantasies.......

That second pic is riotous, by the way. I've never seen such a historically inaccurate uniform! No respect, for God's sake.

Oh, uh....what was the topic again?

*edit* Now that I examine it more closely, I must commend the first pic's uniform. She's clearly kitted for tropical climate operations, complete with appropriate jungle boots. Not sure if the hair is regulation, though, and she's definitely begging for the old Article 15 with the unlaced footgear. I guess I could overlook it this time....I mean....the uniform regs are really just guidelines , after all....

Agreed,

Perhaps a site focused on Tactis, Strategy Guides, After Action Reports would be great.

For the strategy guides, a walk-through of the 50/60+ scenarios would be great, especially if one could embedd graphics. This will help newbies like me alot.

I will contribute my first AAR:

Gefechtsaufklaerung as Germans (Small, 15 turns, German Attacking)

and include graphics too.

Please no frames

Frames carry many hassels, if not done well can make a site fail. They also carry a security risk called "frame spoofing" which basically allows hackers to get in and add frames to your site. From a design point of view they are a no no.

I am pretty new to this web design thing. Can do the formatting, have a good handle on PHP, etc. I see some folks have problems with frames, but they provide a rather easy way to setup a well organized site with proper nav bars and such without that much effort. I understand the deep linking and search engine issues, and have somewhat of a workaround in place. But what do I use aside from frames to generate similar effects without having to jump through hoops or driving my bandwith usage thru the roof?

Sgt Emren,

Your Pix is OFF TOPIC. The bikini clad person *is* not wearing Camos or doing anything remotely resembling a fire-movement (not even a panic-auto-sneak) and is therefore not a CM:BBBabe.

Remove it at Once before this goes to general topic forum...Grrr

... just joking... nice pair of zooks.
