Redwolf is right, the problem is the low experience of the troops. In the early stages of the winter war finnish conscripts repeatedly used to throw Molotov cocktails at soviet high-flying (20'000ft)level bombers , downing several of them. Only after strong soviet protests threatening severy reprisals (dropping borscht on cities) did the finns stop these unusual practice.

Molotovs are the pits.

Aside from this apparent bug where troops seem to be trying to launch them into orbit (IIRC the original game didn't have this problem, it seems to have been introduced with one of the patches), they are less effective then grenades (even against open topped vehicles) but used first, it often takes an age for a squad sitting right next to a dozing tank to toss one and they have about as much chance of knocking out a vehicle as a pebble.

Better send it or I will get one of those finnish conscripts to throw Molotov cocktails from Basel to Mannheim. It is said that the arty conscripts were able to throw even that far.

The "miss" procedure obviously rolls for the size of the miss, with the least accurate shots getting wider misses. It is then placed wherever. That generates the absurd throws.

I've seen something similar when ordering T-34s to area fire at a sound contact a long way off while moving. Since they get only 1-2% accuracy, they miss by comical distances - a full km in one case (lol).

Conceptually, just put it down to "missed by a mile" and grin. As for a modeling fix, the miss location should be within max range or max range plus 10m, and miss to the side if the "roll" is that bad.

Which Soviet squads have the WORST chance of taking out armor?

Answer: Squads with 4 or 5 molotovs.

Which Soviet squads (non-RPG) have the BEST chance of taking out armor?

Answer: Squads with ZERO molotovs.

Hand grenades, baby! That's where it's at for the Soviets. Too bad the Sovs can't discard the molotovs.
