McIvan
Stuff all muzzle rise in that video too...quite surprising (to me, anyway)......looked reasonably accurate for what it was. My idea of bullets being sprayed all over the place took a bit of a hit.
John Kettler
Lascar, Stunning! Is there more, please? Certainly explains why Russian SMG units are so nasty in CMBB. Had no idea anyone was still using PPSh41s, never mind U.S. troops in Iraq! It's compactness, reliability, and volume of fire would seem to make it just the thing for room clearing, though. undead reindeer cavalry
some SMGs were relatively accurate even with full bursts if the gunner knew what he was doing. i think the pattern below for Suomi SMG is quite nice: Above are two targets shot during official Army weapon acceptance tests from 100 meters' distance. Left target: 15 rounds of semi-auto shots from bench rest. Right target: 50 rounds of full auto shots as a single long burst from bench rest.source: http://www.guns.connect.fi/gow/suomi1.html
Gazer
Otherwise a nice article URC, but the choice of words like "Russian masses" or "hordes" and the general attitude just made it feel a bit cheap... I have used Suomi SMG during my army training. It is very easy to fire long bursts with it and it is suprisingly accurate and of especially high quality for its age. The ones we were using were from WW2! In the end I would rather take our standard assault riffle. It's lighter and more versatile. The weight and small caliber of Suomi SMG makes the sustained automatic fire possible.
John Kettler
undead reindeer cavalry, While I take your point, I don't think it's exactly a fair comparison, considering the old school, last forever gunsmithing that went into the renowned Suomi, as opposed to the stamped PPSh-41, described in this article. From what I've seen in researching this, the Suomi had 100 meters more range than the PPSh-41 in which it could deliver accurate fire (300 meters for the Suomi vs 200 meters for the PPSh41). http://www.cruffler.com/trivia-March01.html The PPSh-41's characteristics are confirmed here in the right box. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PPSH-41 SLAVA '45 here has apparently fired one in real life. http://forums.filefront.com/showthread.php?p=1637518 Lots of PPSh-41 material here, including more firing videos! http://www.ppsh41.com/ One for Kitty! http://www.ppsh41.com/ppshmgp2.MPG Another firing sequence. http://www.ppsh41.com/ppshmgp3.mpeg Krummlaufskiy http://www.ppsh41.com/curve-barrel.mpg Regards, John Kettler

JasonC
URD - I also note the caption says that is fired from a bench rest. The muzzle will move a lot more in a real "from the shoulder" shot. But since only 1-2 need to get there, that is going to be enough anyway.

I remember AK's were banned from US troops in Iraq a while ago, and now WWII vintage?
Runyan99
Yeah, where in the hell does a US soldier in 2006 get a PPsh!? Was it $40 on the Baghdad black market?
Inola
Hehe, do you really believe this? Or this is joke. Photoshop can do even more unusual "wonders"
FAI
My impression is that it was a staged photo op. The marines look relaxed, and no way somebody's gonna be busy taking pictures if they actually believed that they were really clearing a room with possible insurgents inside.
undead reindeer cavalry
yeah the article is what it is. i used it just to showcase that WW2 SMGs had potential to be quite accurate.
