Best Defensive Force Against Soviet SMG plt

Recommended Posts

1. HMGs high up and far back covering the open ground between the bodies of woods. Remain sound contacts, not easy to reach or hurt, able to pin them. Preferably with criss-crossing slightly "keyholed" lines of sight, not visible from the direct front of each HMG (to avoid long mortar LOS).

2. TRP arty registered on the best continuous tree-covered routes into your positions. Small linkages can also be mined to break covered approach routes. Make them go into the open at some point, so #1 above can operate. Observe these obstacles with small LPs - LMGs or half squads - so you know when they try such routes.

3. Full platoon regular infantry positions with 150-200m of open ground ahead of them. (Wheat, brush etc will do in a pinch). Use these to deny them important bits of cover they'd need to get closer. Set covered arcs to 20m after they step into the open, no "hide" orders. (Expect supporting arty or tanks a few minutes after springing such an ambush, however).

4. If you must block a covered route with men rather than mines or TRP arty, you want SMGs of your own, or pioneers, set deep enough inside a treeline that LOS barely reaches out. At 30m - LOS limits in full woods or pines - flame and demo charges will beat SMGs. *Provided* they get first trigger pull against moving men.

5. Site high caliber direct fire HE weapons on covered areas that make good "form up" locations for attacks on your main infantry positions. A hidden sIG, a StuH, if you are "poor" then 75mm leIG. Combine this with #1 and #3 to cover the open ground areas beyond such form up points. When your small arms fire drives them back into a certain body of woods momentarily, "pursue" with HE to prevent them from rallying. Broken men tend to "overstack" in limited areas of cover, and can be KOed for good if you catch them at such times with HE.

Many of these principles work against all Russian infantry. German defenders can rarely afford to tangle in close, in cover, with Russian infantry attackers (unless already broken), because those tend to have numbers and at least some SMGs per squad. They will also work against SMG infantry.

JasonC's recommendations are good to follow up on.

If cost is a factor for you then well placed HMG's and mortars to support your riflemen will carry you well. 105mm artillery will carry well if you can get any but 81mm mortars should do the trick in pinning the Soviets. If the situation allows, having trenches, barbed wire, and mines helps.

Well, let's see... three Elite Pioneer battalions with extra flamethrowers, coupla Sturmtigers supported by flamethrower tanks, few Jabos, minefields and MG bunkers stretching across the map, dozen of 150mm spotters with hundreds of TRP's...

I'm not saying that this is THE BEST possible defense against a SMG platoon, but it is something to start with.
