A thread of research links

Recommended Posts

On another thread, a fellow asked for a list of resources I use when researching things. I thought it didn't belong in the bottom of an unrelated thread. Others might have their own lists to add, covering areas I've left out, in their own posts below.

I use books of course, Glantz and Zaloga on the Russians, the army green books (which I have on CDrom) for the US, etc. But for most things the references aren't at my fingertips, they are stored elsewhere.

The single most important resource I use is the Regenstein library at the University of Chicago. For the hard ones.

Then there is Google.

I maintain a large collection of links in a "military history" folder of my browser favorites. Too many to make it useful to dump them all here, I am sure. But some of the highlights, that I find myself using frequently as references, might be helpful.

WW II Vehicles -

http://www.achtungpanzer.com/panzer.htm

http://www.wwiivehicles.com/

Modern systems -

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/row/index.html

Small arms and infantry weapons -

http://www.geocities.com/Augusta/8172/panzerfaust.htm

http://www.rt66.com/~korteng/SmallArms/arms.htm

Jason Long has numerous useful pages -

http://members.tripod.com/~Sturmvogel/Panzerkeil.html

http://members.tripod.com/~Sturmvogel/WarEcon.html

http://members.tripod.com/~Sturmvogel/tigers.html

There is a German OOB for Normandy that is the best of its kind on the web -

http://home.swipnet.se/normandy/gerob/gerob.html

There is also an exceptional, "daily diary" style operational timeline of France 1940, here -

http://chrito.users1.50megs.com/1940/mai/12mai40west.htm

The Kursk page here is spotty, but the "raw data" files it has zipped are extremely useful, clearly taken from German staff reports and contemporary orders -

http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/avenue/vy75/

Coverage of the Russians is less extensive for English speakers. Here are some I use -

http://www.battlefield.ru/index.html

http://www.serpukhov.su/dima/war/eng/eindex.htm

http://rkkaww2.armchairgeneral.com/

There are many good US sites, but the best is the center for military history -

http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/default.htm

http://www.militaryhistoryonline.com/wwii/

http://www.lonesentry.com/

(P.S. - Look at the "online bookshelves" part of the US Center for Military History site, and the "US army in WW II" article at military history online).

There are tons of German sites, though spotty in terms of which bits have been developed.

http://www.feldgrau.com/

http://www.panzerdiesel.com/

http://www.wargamer.com/Hosted/Panzer/panzerpage.html

Occasional unit history sites are well enough done or provide enough detail they are useful, not just for that unit but for broader campaigns they took part in, tactical methods, etc.

http://www.kwanah.com/txmilmus/36division/archives.htm

http://members.aol.com/super6th/6adpubs.htm

http://www.btinternet.com/%7Eian.a.paterson/battles1941.htm

That'll have to do ya. I hope some of them help.

PPS - please excuse the annoying pop ups at some of these. Free sites often have them. (Or get a pop-up blocker...)

More modern stuff, although the British Army site has lnks to regimental histories

www.army.mod.uk

Soviet gear:

http://armor.kiev.ua/fofanov/

Tigers and Modern MBTs

http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/main.html

Small arms, cannon etc.

http://www.quarry.nildram.co.uk/

Modern US army field manuals and more can be found here

http://atiam.train.army.mil/portal/index.jsp

Finally, an excellent collection of military documents dating from the late 19th century to the present day. Features like 'lessons learned' and 'US ordenance catalogues' are a real insight into WWII.

Good stuff! If you all don't mind, I'd like to add these to the reference area located in the Proving Grounds. Our reference area is a searchable index of links of interest related to all things CM and by being searchable, it's almost a mini "Google" of sorts with only relevant results. Sorry, no porn. tongue.gif

Direct link to our reference area HERE.

Here's a few I've found useful. All Eastern Front resources.

Oh, and I am about to get my hands on General Ivan Boldin's memoirs (Stranitsy Zhizni, Ministry of Defense Publishing House, Moscow, 1961) but it's never been translated into English. Any suggestions on where I could get it translated?
