Cheese Panzer
OK, I downloaded the demo. It ran once, but very slowly. After the first time it refused to run, always giving me a: DirectX "dderr_unsuported" error during the "calculating supply" phase of loading the first turn. I've updated my drivers, installed DirectX 9, and reloaded the demo several times. Nothing works. I've already pre-ordered the game and I'd hate to have it not run on my machine. HELP!!!

Moon
Kuniworth... there is a noticeable trend to a negative signal to noise ratio in your posts recently. A few too many f-words, and your two posts above are really uncalled for. Better take a little break? No need to comment here. Not used to the freedom I guess. I'm working on restraining myself from the F-word but the latest turns in the "Panzerliga-gate" got me a bit heated.

Liam
If unsolved, what version of Windows are you running? Have you installed any other new games recently and uninstalled them? You may wish to try an earlier version of Direct X like 8.0... Originally posted by Cheese Panzer: OK, I downloaded the demo. It ran once, but very slowly. Have you tried uninstalling Direct X 9.0C and installing a previous version of Direct X? Do you have all the right drivers from your Video Card up to date? Also do you have restore Points? Windows Help should back up your system every time you update say every few months or fews depending on how you set it up. Perhaps a previous setup of your windows was fine, but you then you say added directdraw and it screwed up a system file in Windows that would interfere with Strategic 2 I'm not absolutely sure what's going on but what I'd do is take it to a friends machine the demo and try it on 9.0c..see if it works, if it does you know that isn't the problem it's your settings and if you computer foolish the easy way is re-install Windows Wipe out EVERYTHING that takes about 45 minutes and requires no brainpower And badabing whatever was in the way should resolve itselfI went back to a restore point from a couple of months ago, well before I was fooling with the graphics stuff. Same problem, although it now appears to be running faster - it didn't take anywhere near as long to crash this time. As for taking it to a friends computer - as far as I can tell everyone else who posts on these forums isn't having a problem, it's just me. I'm sure someone is running DirectX lower than 9.0c, so I'm inclined to think the problem is the interface between DirectX, SC2, and my graphics cards. I'm certainly not a power-user and the only piece of software I've installed in the last 6 months was a tax program. I'm off to try DirectX 8 to see if that helps.
Cheese Panzer
Nope, changing to DirectX 8.1 didn't help. Now what?
Sombra
Whats the date of your video driver and your sound driver?
Hubert Cater
Hi Cheese Panzer, Sorry to hear about the trouble but the first thing I would do is try and update your Video Card driver. Also, try running Dxdiag.exe, Start->Run->Dxdiag and run the DirectX DirectDraw tests and confirm that as is well. Hope this helps, Hubert

Hubert Cater
For Dxdiag click on the Start button on your taskbar and then select Run. A little Run window should pop up where you can type in Dxdiag then click Ok. After that a DirectX Diagnostic Tool will pop with several tabs and options. Click on Display and then the 'Test DirectDraw' button. The tool should perform several tests and let you know if DirectDraw appears to be working on your system. This is just one way to narrow down the possible issue. For your driver, here is a link to the S3 Driver website: http://www.s3graphics.com/en/resources/drivers/index.jsp
Hubert Cater
One other thing you can try is the new demo and see if that resolves the issue for you as there was one small change in DirectX implementation which may or may not have been the problem on your system. This is of course just another way to narrow down the issue as well. The new demo links can be found here: http://www.battlefront.com/products/sc2/demo.html
Liam
That is very odd, only a Tax Program? That's it Cheese. You didn't remove direct X 9.0 properly? To Properly Remove Direct X 9.0 which you haven't do this Site http://ask-leo.com/c000337.html BE VERY CAREFUL IN Registry I'd update your video driver, it sounds like the key word, "Software or Driver Conflict." Same thing... When I say reformat and reinstall windows, in the end I have dealt with the Best of the Best... and that is usually a surefire way of eliminating any problem if nothing else works, so don't worry you can always do that in the end. AND there should be no reason that SC2 doesn't work then...With XP you do not require a Bootable Disk and all you need is your Key Code and backup any important files? You do have the original CD of XP? If not why spend 3 hours trying to hunt up a solution a problem you are not equipped to fix or pay some dude 150 bucks to fix something by updating a Driver or toying with your System files? Axis & Allies wouldn't run at all in a certian version of Direct X a Batch file was created to remove it...Was a pain in the rear to find out you couldn't play IP and you thought it was connection speed when it was Windows and it's bloody components. WHEN and if you get windows up again do not put the 9.0c on. it seems to have lots of conflicts. Search Google, you'll see thousands of issues [ April 13, 2006, 02:20 PM: Message edited by: Liam ]
Cheese Panzer
OK, here are all the replies to the above posts: File Dates Video: 11/7/2002 Sound: 2/11/2003 Video Drivers: My driver version (8D04) appears to be the latest, although it was rather vexing to find out my card is now considered too old to be worth supporting. Direct Draw Test: All OK, no conflicts or errors found. New version of Demo: Still same failure message, current failure point is "Draw_War_Map_to_buffer" DirectX 9.0: Removed as per directions. Re-ran Direct Draw test, 9.0c no longer listed, passed tests. Reloaded Demo, same failure point. So basically I'm down to reloading Windows to play SC2? Liam
Cheese it's not so bad.. I have had my I/O card fry, I had to manually bypass it and it's built on to the Motherboard. I have had my Monitor Burn Out and I don't know about monitors and it's just working barely cause I loosened the frame. Also I have had to take back 2 different AntiVirus as they blocked my internet access and neither Windows or Mcafee or Norton Help could do what I could do. Ultimately I'm own the Official patch for the 32 bit 16 bit conflict in Windows because I toyed with it for 6 hours... without A plus Certification of any kind and half the guys I spoke to supposedly are 20-25 dollar an hour specialists, Bahhhhumbug... I figured it out by toying and teasing.. The real Experts you can find them and they may help but well, that may take some time.. As they themselves really have to put themselves in your shoes, not something that's easy. Browsing Google for people with the same error is a wise idea, there may be fixes offered but that can take hours and hours... this is my 11th year in the computer business in some form and they never cease to annoy me.. Welcome to the party Pal Good luck Cheese Welcome to Computers. A royal pain in the arse... A reinstall of Windows is a breeze if your system is halfway up to date.
Sombra
Hmm seems that your videocard doesn´t support the latest DirectX9C. you should check again if there is no more current video driver for your card. I think there are drivers for you from 2005 , please check again
Cheese Panzer
Yup, that was it. I FINALLY found the right driver (could the support site be any more user unfriendly?). The new driver solved all the problems except for a few graphical glitches with Amphibious, Transport, and submarines. So the demo now runs at decent speed on my machine and I have high hopes of the release when it finally arrives. Thanks for all the help!
Hubert Cater
Cheese Panzer, Glad to hear you finally got the game running. The few graphical glitches might be a resolvable problem as well. Can you try running the game without 3-D unit icons? This option can be selected in the OPTIONS dialog in the upper left hand corner of selectable options. If this seems to fix the problem then the good news is that there is a patch in the works that will have 3-D units work properly for all systems. In fact this is already a part of the new demo and if you try the latest demo this can be confirmation that it will work on your system. Hope this helps, Hubert
