Sequoia
The Fallschirmjaegers were the first to use Recoiless Rifles. Assuming they were still being used in the summer of '44 will we be seeing them with the Market-Garden Module? Is Recoiless Rifle even the prefered term for them or is Recoiless Gun given their calibre of 75 and 105 mm a better term? I'm also not sure when the Allies began using them. Thanks
Sergei
Weren't the recoilless rifles they used first and foremost light weight field artillery replacements? They also had hollow charge ammo available, but I don't know if they ever were used in anti-tank role. Anyone know?
ASL Veteran
I'm going to say that there wouldn't be any recoilless rifles for the German paras in Market Garden. From what I can tell they served the role of the infantry gun, but because they used so much propellant they stopped making these guns in early 1944. Only 450 were made (75mm) and there was a shortage of ammunition for them because propellant was in short supply. I'm going to guess that all the propellant was going towards panzerfausts and panzershreks. They are known to have been used in Crete, Italy, and the Carpathian mountains.
Sublime
So this isn't referring to the Puppchen? I wish we could see those - an important 'bridge' AT weapon for the Axis before they get fausts n schrecks.
Michael Emrys
I'm also not sure when the Allies began using them. I believe that the US army began using a 57 mm RR in March 1945. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M18_recoilless_rifle Michael
Ted
Wikipedia: World War II The first fifty production M18 57 mm cannons and ammunition were rushed from the factories to the European Theater in March 1945. Further examples were subsequently sent to the Pacific Theater. The first combat the new cannon saw was with the U.S. Army's 17th Airborne Division near Essen, Germany. While impressed with the performance of the high explosive (HE) warhead, the M18's 57 mm HEAT round proved to be a disappointment, with only 63.5 mm (2.5-in.) of armor penetration at 90 degrees, compared with the older M1A1 Bazooka which had a nominal penetration of nearly 120 mm.
Sergei
So this isn't referring to the Puppchen? I wish we could see those - an important 'bridge' AT weapon for the Axis before they get fausts n schrecks. Püppchen was not a recoilless rifle but a rocket launcher... gun... thing. As it predated the Panzerschreck, Püppchen is more appropriate for Fortress Italy and I hope we will see it there in one of the coming modules. Might not be necessary for CMBN unless of course there are records of it being used so late. It wouldn't have been obsolete even then, but it's hard to justify towing a little gun like that along when the Panzerschreck is far more portable weapon with the same capabilities. The only benefits of Püppchen were, I think, no backblast and the more stable mount and sights allowed for better accuracy. The benefit is marginal compared to the downsides.

Sublime
Ah thank you. Well I'd certainly like the see the Puppchen introduced. And these recoilless rifles I'd never heard of as well.
Michael Emrys
I imagine they will make an appearance just as soon as BFC has nothing better to do. Michael
