Many Russians like to start the war on August 7 because it is politically convenient to say "evil Georgian Army was trying to exterminate population", which is also what Russian state-owned media spins about war in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the month South Ossetian artillery (with Russian help, of course) was blasting schools, administrative buildings, police stations, and other objectives in a blatant attempt to elicit an armed response from Georgia. For the first few days the Georgian's were smart enough to not react in an overt manner but rather increase sniper activity. Finally August 7 the Georgians had enough and threw together a hasty plan to take Tskhinvali, unaware that this was Russia's plan from the start. Before August 7, Russia was moving large amount of equipment form the 58th Army in preperation of the Georgian response. Even in the 1990s Russia was actively funding South Ossetian ultra-nationalists to divide the two groups who have lived together in harmony for centuries. Russia is no innocent peacekeeper. Leaving a fire team or more inside a BMP is pretty much always a bad idea. It's different with leaders because they are usually smaller teams and have the added benefit of access to better radios and other communication equipment.

Putin knows that he has nothing to fear at all from NATO unless he is planning aggression against a NATO member state. Also, I wasn't trying to downplay western help or anything I was saying that the person I was responding to was exaggerating by making the assumption that the Ukrainian military is completely useless without western support. I was already aware of the assistance provided mainly by Canada, USA, and Britain, but this is mainly in small amounts of rear lines support equipment and small-unit training.

Support from the West has been extremely minimal because of indecisiveness and general lack of interest from Western countries. A vast majority of westerners are clueless to the situation in Ukraine. Ukrainian army is fighting in many places with Maxim Machine guns and PTRDs, not Leopard 2A7 and F-35. Ukraine has been almost alone since 2014. After Dutch referendum they cannot join EU or receive large-scale military aid from EU and Ukraine is severely restricted in purchasing US equipment because Obama is a genius. To answer your question, all the land Ukraine has retaken so far was with, at best, negligible support from foreign countries.
