  1. Nice pictures Wicky. There are still a few pillboxes in my home town covering the Medway. When I was a kid there were still conical dragons teeth by the main bridge. Unlike the standard pyramid shaped variety these had a hole running through them, so that the Home Guard could insert a poll and then run them out into the middle of the road, before taking cover. And would have filled the car sized gaps shown in this ....

I'd like a tool tip to appear when you hover the mouse over a unit, saying which team the unit is, and which platoon it is from.

I'd also like to be able to edit the team name in game to whatever I want; so in the center bottom unit tab (one white flag), I could change '1st squad / A' or  '1st squad / B' to whatever name I want. eg. 1-1 or 1-2 etc. or maybe something more descriptive.

    1. You get that in the UI you click a unit anyway.

    2. Why? The info we are given is historically accurate.

I watched a video of Red Thunder and was very surprised to see this at about 43:49 into this skirmish. How come the German soldiers didn't see nor hear that huge IS tank earlier although it was only a few steps in front of them? There aren't any branches or huge bushes in front of them to obscure the view of that behemoth of a vehicle. That situation seems a bit too incredible to happen.

A few steps = a metre/yard. I can't help think that it was further away than that. And they nailed it. So give 'em a cheer, not a whinge.

In my opinion, this is a great little campaign - with one flaw.

The maps and scenarios are very well made, but unfortunately I think the briefings are a bit sloppy: Not enough info on when reinforcement are arriving - or even where. In the last scenario you dont know at which end of the map the reinforcements will arrive.

That is a real pity as everything else is so well made.

I agree with you that a bit more info would be nice. With regards the timing of reinforcements, perhaps the designer is trying to reflect the actual uncertain nature of the invasion itself. As for where your reinforcements will arrive, you need a very good memory of the previous two battles.

I'll add some more thoughts once I finish the fight.

It's not a literal "walking barrage" like you would have in WW1, but honestly, trying something like that in WW2 is just plain stupid.

One survivor with an LMG can ruin your whole plan. In WW1 walking barrages were accompanied by specific targeted barrages on identified enemy strongpoints and machinegun positions that had been identified with recon efforts up to many months before the battle even began, and even so, many attempts at attacks like these broke down in the face of even scattered resistance surviving the barrage until you had tanks accompanying the infantry.

Very true. And even with tanks you had to hope that they didn't sink into a muddy shell crater.

The video shows two two-man teams in two adjacent action spots, which is completely normal.
    (Thanks domfluff)

One thing I have noticed with some frequency is the old "separated man bug" has come back with a vengeance, most likely related to the new "corner peeking" behavior, as when the team moves out while one man is busy crawling to a corner to peek around it, and he gets left behind while the rest of the team moves to a new location.

This is now happening so often I notice it every single time I play the game, where it used to happen maybe once per scenario.

Yes, I had it too often the last time I attempted Montebourg, I gave up after five missions, despite them being fairly comfortable wins, both it, and the gap charging, made playing the campaign too much hassle.

But, when things are all fixed I shall return, as MacArthur said to that brothel keeper in downtown Manila ... Allegedly.

The things you are suggesting aren't really needed within the time frame of most CM missions. Also, a hypothetical mission which supported these features wouldn't necessarily be more fun to play in my humble opinion.

The British army has a medical procedures guide that you can carry with you. Basically says you shouldn't attempt to do anything if you, or the area containing the casualty is under fire. That covers most CM situations, and even when there's enough peace and quiet to do some triage etc.. I think the way it's abstracted in the game is fine already.

    Hear hear.

I have noticed that you get sort of a lateral rolling barrage with a single tube and a linear fire mission.  It tends to start at one end and walk across.  Of course, if you knew the timing, and which end was which, you sort of have a rolling barrage.

You might also find that sometimes it goes back the other way during longer missions.

  9. Also, the typical "rolling barrage" is something that would normally happen outside of the remit of CM battles, i.e. before, or between them.

Although I agree with Freyberg you can try to create your own with TRPs.

Also, some designers do include pre-planned arty missions, but it is quite rare. And I tend to have my troops keep their heads downs, just in case.

  10. I have noticed that so many people nowadays don't know the difference between "to" and "too". Sadly, living in the Dictatorship of the Semi-literate this kind of behaviour has become the norm rather than the exception.

Oh sorry, you meant the spreading out behaviour introduced in Engine 4 because so many people moaned about their pixeltuppen bunching up. Well, as Dartford Mick and the Tax Dodgers once sang "You can't always get what you want. But you might just find, if you moan too much, you get something, you don't really need, ooh baby baby."

On a more prosaic note, it don't look 40 yards to me; more like 16 or 17.

I believe this is a marketing ploy after a long study of wargamers. Just this morning I was forced, very much against my will, to purchase and download FB

No you weren't. I have it on good authority that at the time of your purchase Mr Axeman was wrapped in the arms of his sweet lady wife, and therefore not in a position to force you to do anything.
