  1. How much ram will be enough? On my 64bit system I have 12 gig of ram, will this be enough?
  2. Hooray, this bodes well for the future. Thank you, thank you Battlefront.
  3. Would going to 64bit also be a venture of diminishing returns? Is there another way around the OOM problem. The problem has been alleviated quite well but not eliminated. So, will it pop its ugly head up again latter?
  4. I know what you are saying sfhand. I spend as much time on map contour cosmetics as I do on the design. I hope that the next patch corrects some of this. For now all you can do is look closely at the map in the elevation mode and see if you can see a pattern of elevation changes all in a strait line. If you do then interrupt this line with an elevation input close to the one you want to interrupt and this will cause the editor to recalculate the area around it and will some times smooth it out. Gotta keep doing this if you want a steeply contoured map to look right. A good method of finding the flaw is to put a patch of sand as close as you can to where the flaw is and go to 3d mode and see where the patch of sand is in relation to the flaw. After doing this for a while you will get good at guessing where the actual flaw is.
  5. At least its better for the 76mm than CMx 1 was. I don't remember ever getting a Tiger or a Panther kill from head on with the 76mm in CMx1. More realistic in CMBN?
  6. 400m it is then. I'm at work on a 3000m x 4000m map. Purely fictitious but will have plenty of approx 400m range shots plus some 1500m or so shots. Kind of Lorraine like. It is designed as "The Hunting Ground" and hopefully will provide an opportunity to hunt and avoid tanks in a more or less even setting. No way to erase the advantage the German tanks held, who would want to, but with some good tactics the US tanks should be able to give a good account of themselves as they did in the Lorraine fighting.
  7. Very interesting thread and data. I wonder how close CMBN follows these test results. Seems to me like we should be seeing some frontal penetrations on the Tiger by the 76mm. At what range is the 76mm the most effective? When I find that out then I will design some maps with ranges to fit it. They need all the help that they can get. Probably not much chance against the Panther but maybe the Tiger would be a different story at the optimum range for the 76mm. I'll start doing some testing to see if there is a range where the US 76mm can get a frontal penetration on the Tiger.
  8. Good point. You can use the less valuable forces to help with a feint.
  9. It sounds like it dosen't matter whether or not scouts are included in the AI group that is attacking. Just group together some tanks and move them forward and let the Tac AI do its thing. You don't have to get fancy in the AI group selection.
  10. Will the AI on attack utilize the same info that the human directed troops utilize? Namely, scouting information such as location of a gun or tank or troop concentration. Does it pass info on the com net? Does an AI tank have to wait till it spots a unit before it is aware of it. In the first instance the AI would benefit from scouting in the second instance it wouldn't. Any body have any info on this? Cant seem to find any thing in the manual. Hopefully I have been clear enough on my question.
  11. Reran the test with "hit text" on. Killing hits were to the Panthers top deck and one to the turret top so they are on quite a slant
  12. Thanks for the heads up John. I'll check it and do the test again.
  13. Thanks for the inputs guys. Thats what I needed to know. Its either me or my monitor or my card.
  14. I remember that when CMBN first came out there was a lot of comment on how the colors looked too brilliant and there were some mods produced to "wash out" some of the color. I notice now that the colors are a little washed out with out the mods. Was this the result of a patch? I have no color mods installed.
  15. Apparently the 50m elevation has something to do with the killing of the Panthers?
  16. I believe that I set them at Veteran and plus one which is normaly the way that I test equipment. And, to be more clear it was a 50m high slope rather than a step and the Panthers during the test made their way down to about the 30m point where they were destroyed during the last test. Some times they dont make it that far. And to be more exact there was no cover for the Panthers or the 57mms, just grass and flowers and weeds.
  17. Hello ian.leslie and womble and all others, I been off the net for a day or so but back on. The test was as follows. 1100m x 320m map with a 50m elevation at one end. Placed two Panthers on the elevation facing the low end of the map and 3 57mm AT guns at the other end about 1050 or so meters away and facing the 50m elevation. Ran the test several times in " hot seat". The Panthers never did , as far as I could tell, spot the guns. The guns spotted the Panthers right away and all were soon on target. The Panthers tried to shift position to get away from the fire but there was no place to hide. The stress level of the Panther crews was maxed out and the 57s finally killed both Panthers without a shot being fired from the Panthers. Flank shots, I couldn't tell, killed the Panthers? I ran this test several times on several different occasions with the same results. Ran the same test, as close as I could get it, with CMBO and the Panthers destroyed all three guns with no problem. I love CMBNs version and its one reason that I like large or huge scenarios. The gun vs tank encounters are different and seem more real to me.
  18. The test that I ran was to see how easy it was for a tank to spot an ATG but was surprised at the outcome. I used a map, 320mx1100m with a 50m elevation at one end. I selected for the Germans two Panthers of the common model for the game and for the US I selected three 57mm ATGs. I placed the two Panthers on the 50m elevation and the ATGs on the flat at about 1050 or so meters away. I ran the test in "hot seat" several times with the same result. Give it a try, you will, I think, be surprised. I never ran this test in CMBO but will as I am curious if there has in fact been a well researched update in this area.
  19. No, come to think of it, your right AFAIK. But, the model seems to have been altered a bit in "my favor" much to my delight.
  20. I recently made some tests utilizing the Panther and some US antitank guns and the results were both surprising and gratifying and I hope that they stay that way. So it is a relief that they are a result of using a penetration model and not biased by someones idea of what should happen.
  21. I wonder if in CMFI there has been any changes made as to weapons effectiveness. Especially the ATGs and tank guns? Are any changes needed?
  22. Thank you for the input Redwolf.
  23. Hello Redwolf, this isn't the correct forum for me to ask this but we are on the subject. I am getting ready to install a SSD in place of my mechanical hardrive and the SSD instructions suggest that a minimum size "virtual memory" be used. Do you think that this will be a problem as far as the OOM condition is concerned?
  24. Thanks for the reply Steve, it sounds to me like Version 2.0 is another step in the right direction.
