    Re: M6 Linebacker

Actually before they even refurbed them back to M2A2 status they were already being used in Iraq as otherwise normal Bradleys (as it wasn't like ADA troops sat the war out, and if you're not shooting TOWs or Stingers the platforms are more or less the same).

I'm of the mind retiring them was still a mistake.  The Avenger isn't armored at all, so it's not like it is going to follow just behind the armor or something and snipe helicopters.  It's just not survivable at all.  Of course the bigger mistake was opting out of BRADATS or similar platforms back in 1993.

    Re: A-10

Here's the thing.  Both it and the SU-25 have about equal odds of completing a strike in the sort of CMBS scenario (while both do things better than the other one, neither commands some amazing advantage that makes it more likely to slip past fighters or heavy SAM presence).  To that end if neither were in, I'd be okay as it's just excluding planes that would either be aborting because they've been locked up, or simply not deployed to the AO.  However if the SU-25 is in, and able to complete strikes in scenarios, then it's equally valid to stick the A-10 in, because if anything it is more likely the US would be able to achieve the sort of air control to employ strike fighters in the long run, while the SU-25 just wouldn't be long for the air war.

So again, neither of them?  Okay!  Makes sense.  One but not the other?  Que?

    Re: USAF

The bigger issue I feel with the A-10 is it is one of the few assets the USAF employs that is actually customer friendly.  When it comes down to getting fixed wing support, the USAF is often very user unfriendly because their priorities are usually:

    1. Shooting down enemy planes.
2.Proving air power can win a war by bombing things in the enemy capital city because that'll show em'
    3. Shooting down enemy planes.
    4. Killing ADA assets because they're super annoying and they keep triggering that damn alarm in the cockpit
    5. Killing enemy aviation (planes)
    6. Bombing things that might or might not be logistical assets for the enemy
    7. Killing enemy aviation (drones and helicopters)
    8. Crew rest
    9. Routine Maintenance
    10. Wishing the USAF would put out a movie that made them look as cool as Top Gun made Navy pilots look
    11. Complaining about the food
    12. Complaining about lack of enemy aviation to kill
    13. Returning the Army's phone calls to find out what it wanted.

So to that end, the A-10 was something that wasn't going to be borrowed to go do CAP missions, bomb a palace, or conduct DEAD missions.  It was all the time, every day going to be doing either CAS, or battlefield interdiction, both of which get thumbs up from the Army and USMC.  And the A-10 was built from the ground up to liaison and fly CLOSE to the troops it was supporting.

The F-35 in contrast flies tens of thousands of feet above the battlefield, isn't really designed to talk with, or coordinate with someone in the mud, and drops two bombs and returns to an air conditioned hanger some hundreds of miles away.  To make matters worse the USAF refers to the B-1 as a CAS capable plane, which is to say I have a brain surgery capable leaf blower.

More than the airframes involved the A-10 was that commitment to support the dude fighting and winning the war.  The F-35 represents a reduction in that customer service, and removing it as an emphasis and instead shuffling it to the lowest priority.

Which is to make a really good argument for US Army fixed wing units, because by god the USAF doesn't want the job, might as well do it ourselves.

Faced with both growing interest in the game and growing temptation to buy it, I headed over to see whether it was playable on my iMac. Answer? Somewhat better than marginally, but not by a great margin. Am running OS X 10.7.5, have twice the minimum RAM and gobs of HD space, but verily sucketh on the VRAM front. After momentarily stunning myself by thinking I couldn't play the game (locked onto Preferred specs initially), I then realized I could. I headed over to look at the weapon lists and found my favorite CAS bird and proven tank eater, the A-10 Warthog, missing and that its much ballyhooed "replacement" the F-35 Lightning II (there, there Kelly Johnson, don't cry) was also absent.

Considering there is presently an entire ANG wing of A-10s in Bahrain, I find it both odd and annoying (how's that for restrained language?) that in CMBS we are evidently going to be Warthogless, while the OPFOR (as seen from the US end) has the flying tank Su-25 FROGFOOT aka A-9sky in military aerospace circles. How did we wind up deprived of our premier tank buster and the infantryman's friend--and get no supposed replacement aircraft either?

    P.S.

I tried the Search function here under "A-10" and got squat. I think the problem here is the same one that I ran into on another thread trying to find a T-64 post. The problem appears to be that the Search function isn't reading the hyphen/dash as a character, completely torpedoing the search. Would some kind soul on the BFC side of things please give Search a tweak so it does recognize the hyphen/dash? Thanks!

No, the only way to divest yourself of equipment is to fire it at the enemy or terrain.

Most of the modern AFVs spot better buttoned up. But some of them have equipment that needs reloading by an unbuttoned crew. At least, that's what I gather from prior posts.

OrdeaL reacted to John Kettler in How is the mechanism of APS in this game?
    exsonic01,

Maybe I can help. I used to work for the firm that made the TOW. Both TOW and ITOW used a xenon beacon which was tracked by the guidance system on the launcher, with steering corrections automatically generated by the position of the crosshairs on the target. The missile tracker could be interrupted by both battlefield dust and other environmental effects, but also by vehicular smoke (diesel on exhaust manifold) artillery smoke and smoke grenades. The idea behind Shtora was to deceive the TOW guidance system by making it think the false optical signal was the real one by first "outshouting" the tracker beacon, then feeding false information back to the launcher designed to cause the TOW to break tracker lock and crash.

TOW 2 shifted from the optical band xenon beacon to the thermal band "waffle iron," a heated honeycomb structure on the missile's rear. ISTR the xenon beacon was retained for the sake of backwards compatibility with earlier launchers lacking thermal sights. This was important because TOW 2 had a much more powerful warhead which now was the diameter of the missile body, making the missile lethal to much more serious threats than either TOW or ITOW could handle.

That was a kluge, but the real value of the TOW 2, TOW 2A and TOW 2B lay precisely in using the thermal beacon as primary guidance. Since thermal sights, such as the AN/TAS-4 night sight on the TOW, can see right through battlefield obscurants, vehicular smoke, artillery smoke, visual band AFV deployed obscurants and most WX with ease, this makes the countermeasure problem much more difficult. Strobing lights aren't going to cut it, which is why Arena was integrated. It provides hard kill to deal with whatever can't be caused to crash or driven off course. Defeating any TOW of the types named requires breaking the SACLOS link driven by being able to see the beacon from the launcher. TOW 2B Aero uses RF command guidance, so Shtora is helpless against it from a direct EOCM perspective.

Javelin uses an IIR (Imaging InfraRed) seeker which operates on fundamentally different principles than does TOW. With Javelin, the countermeasures are no longer working at breaking a command link, but at hiding from, misdirecting or destroying the missile seeker, whose guidance computer knows what your AFV looks like and is coming for you! Unlike, say, a UKR Corsar, which is a LBR missile, Javelin emits nothing, locks on and launches. Once it's away, you can shoot the operator squarely between the eyes, and the missile will very likely still kill you. If you do the same thing to the Corsar operator before missile impact, the missile will crash, and he will die. That is the power of Fire and Forget. If the Javelin comes in horizontally, then Arena has a good chance of defeating it. but for the sake of keeping the vital on the steppes vertical profile low, Russian tankers have an APS which simply can't deal with high divers which come in over its vertical coverage.

No system is perfect, and if BFC has carried the concept over from CMx1, there are things modeled in the game via fuzzy logic, in which weapon performance generally, depending on under the hood values set, will go a certain way, but not always. APS in the game, regardless of which particular type, even if the threat is in the engagement envelope, will generally do a great job, but it won't do a perfect job. The purpose of APS isn't saving a particular tank, but rather, protecting the armored herd as a whole and keeping more of its elements in battle, longer.

So i decided to try modding some of the Russian/Ukrainian firearms, not going to call it a mod just yet because i can't guarantee ill get far with this one (like most of my others ) but so far i like the results...

Here is the older AK-74, RPK-74, and AKS-74u which all share the same textures. Deep red Russian laminate stock and polymer mag but thats what i like...

Still have to do the folding stock and figure out how exactly the brake on the "Krink" is textured...

I also have done a new makarov but have yet to find it in the game  . Keep you guys posted on any more progress

    Ordeal,
My avatar is the artwork of Joe Kubert. He did all the Sgt. Rock covers from the 60's to the 80's, and was the first artist that inspired me as a kid to pursue art. This is my favorite cover by him. The first time I saw it as a boy I just said Wow! I want to be an artist to be able to draw that. His talent and skill to draw Rock and Easy Co. from his mind with such expression is AMAZING! He was a master cartoonist to be admired. I am glad to show off his work to those who would appreciate it. I just put his name into a search and found this site where you can see more of his work, and read some of the books in video format by pausing and turning sound off. http://wn.com/sgt_rock_comics

    Gummi,
I'm honored to be the subject of your 1st post. Welcome to the BF forum. The regular place where mods are uploaded and downloaded is the Repository. Here is the link: http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=314&func=select&id=61

When CMBS first came out the Repository was not set up yet for the game, and with the new forum capability to upload files guys have just put the stuff up here too.

I've noticed in AAR vids that many people do not use walk very often.

Walking is a very good way not to be seen.

I've walked recon units and FOs to locations in full view of the enemy and reached ideal locations
    without being spotted.

When I quick move to a building, I walk to an elevated floor and setup. Only if the enemy is very close do I become spotted and invariably not even then.

Also walking around leaves your troops rested and ready for assaults or fast running.

I don't know how many times I've seen experienced players assault a position with tired forces and have them smacked.

If you plan to assault, rest your men. Too many times, people are in a hurry to engage. Condition is a very important part of the game and is seemingly ignored by many.

Also, C&C is also ignored by many. Its very important. I see players either move their command units to dangerous positions, leading from the front. This is American Civil War stuff. Think about moving command up to a safe, close position in relation to their troops. Try not to include them in the attack.

If you have to move them up for observation purposes, move your troops up first, wait a bit for spotting, then if its safe, move the command up slowly to a good observation spot.

    Just a few thoughts.
