We haven't touched on this in a while, so I'll do so now.  The social compact between the Russian people and Putin is fundamentally based on preventing a return to the lawlessness and privations of the 1990s.  Due to many factors, not least of which is the failed war in Ukraine, the underlying causes of the 1990s seem to be accelerating.  In some ways they are likely already here and people are just dismissing it as temporary inconvenience.  But it's not and it won't be temporary.

This is what I thought Prigozhin's speech was meant to convey - that he is a man of such authority that he will convert convicts into moral people who will defend Russia and the people.
I saw a twitter title saying the video was leaked, but if it was I imagine he leaked it himself (he also has his own media company). It was an absurd pitch to make to murderers, rapists and thieves - you can die for Russia but you will not loot or rape - so it likely wasn't meant for them.
And my apologies for my fruity joke emphasizing the absurdity of his speech :)

I think the funniest thing about this clip is that the pedestrians are only mildly worried and slightly inconvenienced about the threat of being decapitated by a drunk lunatic. It's Monty Python levels of absurdity.

Maybe they are used to him? Anybody who knows the context?

As funny as it is, it is from a TV/film set. Somewhere on Twitter someone posted a picture of him with a clapper board in front of his face but I can't find it now. But that is why the pedestrians aren't acting realistically.

    EDIT: found it

  3. The Ukrainian journalist who interviews Russian POWs has a video on a prisoner exchange in Bakhmut. It's quite long and not very focused (and the captions stopped working well half way through), but it gives a few glimpses and insights into life in a frontline city, the conditions for Ukrainian POWs and Russian interrogations (they seem to be obsessed with foreigners fighting for and training and equipping the Ukrainians).

His message seems inconsistent. He is saying that the government are conducting the "SMO" badly and things need to change, and if they don't change, terrible things will happen. But then he says that people within the administration who are trying to change things are being treasonous and attempting a coup.

Is this because the people he thinks are attempting the coup are not the right people (not the real Russian patriots)? Who or what faction is he pointing the finger at?

The @wartranslated guy was saying that parts of the 3rd Army Corps tried to intervene at Kupyansk and was defeated. Not sure how good the provenance is on that.

There was this video. A Russian reporter talks about reinforcements coming to Kupyansk (one vehicle of which bears the 3rd army corps marking?). Later the same vehicle is shown abandoned/destroyed.

Fun fact when some RU tried to claim wagnerites arrived at Kupyansk, Wagnerites denied it and said they do not have units at Kharkov direction.

I wonder if this wreck is recent and where it is exactly. And if you want to stay secret, don't write your name on your barrels.

Btw. seriously what the of name of this operation is is curious. It may be known and studied for many years to come, especially if they really manage to capture/sorround Kupyanks. I would vote for something like "Chervona Kalina"; or maybe less ethnic, like 'Thunder"".

I hope they have an Operation Washing Machine. Followed by Operation Flush.

Added him to the oligarch section of our list.  Curious why now.

All of the mainstream media I have seen report that he has openly criticised the invasion or, perhaps more correctly, that Lukoil, the company for which he was the chair of the board of directors, did so.

“Calling for the soonest termination of the armed conflict, we express our sincere empathy for all victims who are affected by this tragedy,” the board of directors of Lukoil said. “We strongly support a lasting ceasefire and a settlement of problems through serious negotiations and diplomacy.” (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/sep/01/russian-oil-executive-dies-in-fall-from-moscow-hospital-window)

Another Lukoil employee "died" in May (the shaman dude), so who knows if the timing has meaning or if they were just waiting for the CCTV at the hospital to break.

  9. Ukrinform report for Aug 30 (https://www.ukrinform.net/rubric-ato/3561420-almost-120-russian-troops-killed-over-30-equipment-units-destroyed-in-ukraines-south-aug-30.html)

"According to verified reports, Ukraine’s strikes eliminated 117 invaders and destroyed nine T-72 tanks, three Grad MLR systems, a Hyacinth-S self-propelled gun, a Msta self-propelled howitzer, 18 armored vehicles, and four ammunition depots in Bashtanka, Beryslav, Kakhovka, and Kherson districts."

    2.  Today we saw video of UKR strikes on Antonovsky bridge -- anyone seen any video of the damage to bridge or pontoon bridge?  And first hand reports?

Not video but this is the latest. The bridge still stands and the barge bridge is around 2/3 complete. It is also quite narrow compared to the bridge, at least from directly above, so is it an easily hit target?

This guy looks like kind of a dork and my first instinct (totally unconfirmable and doesn't mean he's a foreigner) is that he's non-Slavic. Journalist or LARPer? Rich kid who was the daughter's love interest, or wanted to be? Who knows....

Or he's the videographer sitting behind his camera and is more aware of or knows the person taking the photo, or even triggered it remotely himself.

At this point, I'm hoping it was the Ukrainians who did it, with the simple purpose of sowing chaos. Given the effort and thought put into figuring out who did it and why around the internet, imagine the growing confusion and paranoia among the FSB, GRU, Russian nats, Kremlin, et al.

    1. If your strategy is negative-decision focused, how do you maintain home-front morale without decisive battles? Abstract friction is great if you understand it. How do you sell that to people?

Memes - in this case, the elevation of cumulative small victories (or enemy's failures) into something more:

    St Javelin
    Himars o'clock
    What airdefense doing?
    etc.

  13. An interview with Podolyak, adviser to Zelenskiy: "Ukraine aiming to create chaos within Russian forces, Zelenskiy adviser says" (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/16/creating-chaos-zelenskiys-adviser-outlines-ukraines-military-strategy)

"The adviser, often described as the country’s third most powerful figure, said Kyiv’s approach ran counter to Moscow’s use of blunt artillery power to gain territory in the Donbas region to the east, which has seen Russian troops destroy cities such as Mariupol and Sievierodonetsk in order to gain territory.

“So Russia has kind of taught everybody that a counteroffensive requires huge amounts of manpower like a giant fist and just go in one direction,” he said, but “a Ukrainian counteroffensive looks very different. We don’t use the tactics of the 60s and 70s, of the last century.”

  14. Given all the speculation and different tip offs, I have a feeling the Ukrainians are reveling in trolling the Russians about the Novofedorivka strike and the Russians' response to it.
The official Ukrainian Ministry of Defence statement (https://www.facebook.com/MinistryofDefence.UA/posts/pfbid0ntt9NdkRyKTJcdCecrnwNBC8gidK8ABj2w712bM5U77giiCah66GmVccJFs3cJhpl)
    Google translate:
"Regarding the fire on the territory of the airfield "Saki" in the area of the settlement of Novofedorivka in the Crimea temporarily occupied by Russia.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine cannot determine the cause of the fire, however, it once again reminds of the rules of fire safety and the prohibition of smoking in unspecified places.

The fact of a fire can be used by a terrorist country in an information war. We do not rule out that the occupiers will "accidentally" find some characteristic "chevron", "business card" or even "DNA".

Please note that cotton clothing is very hygienic.

Keep calm and believe in the Armed Forces of Ukraine!"

  15. Given the recent discussion on the state of Russian technology and engineering, will this be modelled in CM?

It is claimed to be the barrel of a BMP. Posted on the Ukraine reddit (no video to worry about autoplay) but without information on it's original source.

If it's bogus, it is still an interesting way to troll the Russians.
