The Ka-50 and its modifications have been chosen as the special forces' support helicopter, while the Mil Mi-28 has become the main army's gunship. The production of Ka-50 was recommenced in 2006. In 2009, the Russian Air Force received three units built from incomplete airframes dating from the mid-1990s.[29]

Hush-hush stuff, please don't reveal my sources.

IIRC the KA-50 is still technically in service but they are so few in number that their strategic relevance to other helos is minimal and its unlikely they would be deployed anywhere especially when there are other helicopters in the Russian inventory that are more capable and have more depth as far as in service airframes are considered.

I seem to recall reading that they have been attatched to special forces units, or are used in a supporting role for such units.....Probably a bit more manageable when you aren't facing the risk of serious AAA.

I can see an abrams surviving maybe 1 hit from a direct artillery shell. But after multiple? That tank is toast.

I'd imagine the crew would be a bit worse for the wear too!  ;)

The Abrams is bigger in dimensions, with the same armor it is going to be a lot heavier.

You only look on one part of the equation to prove your right.

What complete & utter drivel!

  4. IIRC Israel improvised a few SPGs too, notably the Soltam etc. on the Sherman chassis.....Without actually seeing it, I couldn't offer much more (I don't recall ever hearing of German SPGs being used by the IDF).

@chuckdyke's suggestion of an AMX-105 is as good a bet as anything I can immediately come up with.

Need to check or Israel bought them

      They did.

  5. Very sad news.  :(

Great to read your words, Michael. Get well.

Sadly Michael wrote those words back in April of 2020, check the link in this post:

Apologies in advance if this has been posted previously.  I did a search and wasn't able to find anything...

I took a break and was away from the game and forum for several years, only returning 4-6 mmonths ago.  I've never posted a lot, but have always been around.  It occurred to me this morning that I didn't recall seeing any recent posts by Mr. Emrys.  So, I searched for Michael  on the forum and found that his last post was from April of 2020.  This revelation sent me to an internet search where I found the following from the Port Townsend Leader.

With a population of less than 10,000 in Port Townsend, I'm afraid this is our man

Which is why people saying that artillery never kills tanks became uninteresting to me. I saw it happen regularly and didn't think the numbers were our of line with expectations.

I don't actually recall saying that.....I believe my exact word was 'Undermodelled'.

Which seems like a pretty good match for @The_Capt's statement above:

So what I think is happening here, and we are going to follow up on, is that fragmentation and blast HE damage on external sub-systems is a little anemic.

But I did do a test in CMBS with the Latest M1 with APS and ran the precision strikes from both 122 and 152 howitzers

and found you are correct in that a direct hit is not creating a kill, normally just substantial damage.

If the strikes are not direct hits, then as reported here, there appears no subsystem damage at all except for tracks.

    This matches my own experience.

True it was hard for a 75 mm to knock a Panther tank out. The King Tiger a very good tank but not very reliable.panther.jpgtiger.jpg

I'm a bit suspicious of the caption for that Kingtiger.....It doesn't appear to have a turret-ring splash-guard, zimmerit, or camo.  In fact it looks a lot like Bovington's 'Porsche' Kingtiger (formerly Black 300).  As explained in a video recently posted on this forum, that tank (& IMHO also the one in this image), were from an initial batch reserved for testing and training purposes.

Your experience is part of a continuum of baffling to me behavior by the Tactical AI.

It has nothing to do with the Tactical AI whatsoever.

Gran was apparently added to the Ukrainian TOE (for this fictional game), based on information that Battlefront had at the time they wrote it.....They haven't felt a need to update it, nor do I think there is one.

CM:BS is filled to the brim with TOE oddities, you can either go into the editor and sort it as best you can (in an attempt to create a more realistic TOE) or you can live with it.

Inaccurate comments that are completely unsupported by in-game evidence (& easily contradicted by the simple expedient of actually starting the game up and playing it) are of no value whatsoever IMHO.

  10. AT Guns work particularly well in combination with fortifcations.....A length of barbed wire, a TRP and a single unit of Mixed Mines can make for a devastatingly effective 'urban ambush' in combination with a keyholed AT Gun & a HMG (a mortar or two never hurts either).

  11. I became friends with a little Polish dude (he & his wife adored my dogs), I asked him when he came here....."1940", he said, "To kill the Germans!"

    I liked him a lot!  :D

I learned shortly after his death that he was a member of Polish 2nd Armoured Regiment.....I only wish I'd found out while he was still alive.
