  1. How do you insert a screen shot onto the post?
  2. Well I never thought I'd say this because I too wanted hexes but I think the tiles accurately reflect how hard it really was to surround and eliminate enemy forces. Although hundreds of thousands were surrounded by both sides on the Eastern Front. Many tens of thousands escaped those traps. Thus the cadre function of rebuilding destroyed units at a discount accurately portrays this IMHO. Yes you can surround and destroy units in SC2WaW but it requires a very large commitment of forces. This is something that both sides found difficult to accomplish in reality during the war, “airtight" pockets were more a dream than a reality. I also would like to see more units in SC3. I however think that most of these units should be in the Operational scenarios as opposed to the Strategic sized games. Somebody in an earlier thread mentioned assault gun icons for AT units when they get mobility - I really like that idea. Cavalry as mentioned would be another nice unit to add but I don’t think they were ever deployed in Corps strength. (I may be wrong on this one – I remember the Soviets deploying them in Division sized units – I’ll have to look it up in some of my books). As far as SC3 though I think it needs to be taken to the next level and made on a global scale. The biggest hurdle is 1 tile land masses this could be overcome by letting units attack directly from the sea before being unloaded( a marine infantry unit would represent this nicely), of course if they didn't win they would a) either be eliminated outright or be susceptible to counterattack from enemy forces - let the enemy infantry attack the transport at sea for example with a bonus this could be reflected by a loss of readiness by the seaborne unit reflecting it’s disorganization as a result of not being able to secure a bridgehead. Supply for those far flung islands could be represented by convoy routes much as we have now since they would not have cities. A scale would have to be worked out that represented so much readiness for so many points committed but I think it should be possible to represent this using the current model. I’m sure HC would be able to tell right away if it is feasible. Anyways that’s where I’d like to see the next step in development heading.
  3. I had a similar experiens in SC2. I sent Hubert the file and he said he would address it. It is one of those things that happens so rarely I guess he hasn't gotten around to it yet.
  4. Gunnar destoys Baron!! I have never seen a forward defense work for the Soviets but it worked for Gunnar. I made the mistake of not being ready to invade the USSR when they entered the war and it cost me. Gunnar is a fine player he should do very well in the next round! My salute to Gunnar!
  5. Actually as the war progressed so did the AA practice on the American ships. Proximity fuses and radar controlled gunnery increased the kill ratio tremendously against attacking aircraft. If AA tech were to be applied to ships I’d say it should be applied to all types of ships and I’d limit it to a max of two at most. The Yamato was bristling with AA guns and it did her no good at all – she still became an artificial reef. LR air would be my suggestion to increasing surprise in the naval encounters although I admit I find it hard to rationalize this tech though when it comes to any ship other than an aircraft carrier. The other ships (some of them) did carry aircraft but these were rather short legged as aircraft went. Maybe the use of Radar on these aircraft could be taken into account but if I remember correctly the only radar equipped aircraft in the war were night fighters. I would like to see aircraft of all types have increased spotting of ships at sea especially the bombers as these units Liberators, Condors were used in that role extensively.
  6. I kinda like the new model (although I still think surface units on a convoy route should be allowed to raid). I don't like the idea of subs taking losses on a convoy route just because they raid though. They already take losses from weather and if the game made them take hits for raiding then why even have units? Create a tech called subs - the more resources go into it the more damage they do - the allies would have a box called escorts that would work the same way. I wouldn't want to see that much abstraction. I'm not sure what the answer to DD experience would be though. Spending time on a convoy route seems like it would be excellent training, however to get good at killing subs they would have to be attacking them ... alot. I don't know what the figures would be but I doubt every escort in the Atlantic attacked a contact much less destroyed one. As far as just leaving the subs on the convoy routes - I had an opponent point out to me that leaving a sub on the same route for more than 2 raids courts destruction - he was right.
  7. Axis and Allies to Advanced Third Reich is like comparing Risk to Chess. I loved the Axis and Allies games myself but there was way to much luck involved. I'd say the Axis and Allies is more of a beer and pretzel game. Advanced Third Reich is much more like Chess and how the "masters" approach this game. You had to be thinking turns ahead to be successful and it was much more complicated than Axis and Allies. Third Reich had a complexity rating of 10 while Axis and Allies I'd rate more of a 2 or maybe 3. Back then a 10 rating didn't daunt me now a days I much prefer games like SC2 as opposed to Hearts of Iron which I thought was way to complicated - I hate games that require several tutorials just to learn how to play them. That was one of the biggest attrations to SC series - you install the game and in 5 minutes you can be playing. I'd love to see something like SC2 in the American Civil War genre - which takes up the rest of my gaming time.
  8. Rambo, It came out in 77 originally I believe and it one of the best games I've ever played. A true classic in every sense of the word. I personally liked WW2 Operational better but WW2 strategic is was the bomb. I think I got addicticted to SC1 and following because it is the only thing close I've come across in all these years. Easy to learn and hard to master - great replay ability. If there were any board gamers around I'd still be playing it and I'm always on the edge of getting Avalanche Presses version of the game. I've always wanted to own a military history store that sold books and games(pc also) but I live in the sticks and it would have to be an online deal from here. If you lived in a big metro area area a retail location might fly but you'd have to have a place for board gamers to play also. Back to your initial reaction - yes it was that good
  9. Colin 1, I have several SC2 v 1.6 games I'm finishing up with no problems at all. It is interesting how the install went - I believe the game looked for the original key from BF and then installed WaW as a standalone game. So I don't beleive you'd have any issues with install it and finishing your current games.
  10. I had to check my email filter but it was there. I'm at 18% download now.
  11. This is nice I'm the kid for a change. Discovered SC1 back in April of 05. All that time and my playing hasn't gotten any better. Hmmmm.....still a heck of alot of fun though!
  12. Played the demo through! I was not able to build some of the new units but I like the new map. Really have to put thought into where you place your units now. I can hardly wait for the full version! I'm jealous of the play testers now
  13. Baron Von Beergut, Bird here from the Bltiz and ACWGC. You will love this game! Since I've started playing it I've dropped to 1 or 2 CW games at a time. Easy to learn very hard to master!
  14. Thanks for the help! After I copied the file I still needed to delete the one in the network folder though (otherwise it still sees it as a tcp\ip - must search the network folder first?). You do a great service here on the boards
  15. I was playing a tcp\ip game against one of the players here on the forum. I saved the game yet when I open it to play my turn and continue it pbem it won't let me.It opens as a tcp\ip game. Did I save it wrong or am I doing something else wrong?
  16. Will the pre-order price be good through this Friday 19 October 2007?
  17. Thanks asgard, I don't think she will be upset with $25
  18. I don't need an exact amount but I have a Bday coming up this week and want to know about how much I need to put back. I presume if I tell the SGM(wife type) $50 I'd be good, correct?
  19. Colin, Buddy - you hit it on the head! amphibs attacking directly on the beach(can you say USMC) - what a simple and yet great idea at the same time! Now you can have a real invasion and 1 tile islands can be invaded. Opens up a wide range of posibilities for the Pacific theater also. All of the changes that have been suggested would be viable and more historically accurate with the change you have suggested. It would still have to be play tested to find the correct mix but I think you are on the right track!
  20. I never was much into Squad Leader, I've alway prefered Operational or Strategic level games myself. I do enjoy the Combat Mission series though. I'm not very good at it but I do enjoy the games All the die rolling used to do me in in the old boardgames. I rememeber over the course of one weekend I managed to get Lee killed at Gettysburg and on Sunday Naplolean in War and Peace! I wish there were random number generators back then
