  1. Im sorry Peter. I have to agree with John in everything he says. So far your description of a PISA just does not work. You cannot be serious that you can offer transfer to a Scottish Army of the Scots members of a British Army. I have signed up to terms to the MOD, I would be a deserter indeed if I suddenly left and run North to join a Scots defence force. Anyway, its all academic. I dont really forsee an independant Scotland controlled by SNP. No one much likes the SNP anyway apart from a few sorry areas. In fact the Scottish Parliament has been a real joke so far. Bad news to break up a great country just for the sake of a few Highlanders, isnt that what the Jacobites failed to do anyway? There were more Scots fought for the British than there were Highlanders. Anyway, I carried out a staw poll of the Scottish members of my unit, 200 guys of which 90 are Scots, only 3 said that they would seriously consider joining what you propose, and 2 of them said they would have to be offerred more money. In fact, double my wage and you may even get me. [ November 12, 2005, 10:00 AM: Message edited by: GSX ]
  2. I suppose its down to BFC, they dont have to release any game to retail if they dont want to. I saw CM Anthology for £9.99 the other day here. Thats all 3 games for under a tenner. Know what, I bought them to keep in case my originals die, thats a double sale from me then.
  3. Some nice well thought out replies. However, I do seem to notice that every few months or so an RAF C-17 flies to Oz to pick up some heavy equipment for them? I still dont buy into the whole premise though. What happens when the British Army decides to keep the Scottish Regiments? Do you allow Scots to serve in the British Army, as Irish citizens can? You will then have to compete against a full career structure in a proper Army then? Then there is the question of which peacekeeping duties you send them on, Im sure it wouldnt be Iraq. It would also take years for a Scots Army to precure this kit and be preficient with it. Interesting debate though. Any ideas on what terms of service would be on offer? And of course there is the old Chestnut of military base closures that would upset the locals. I believe that there are 2 Naval bases, 3 Large Airbases and various Army units stationed in Scotland. Two in Morayshire alone for the RAF, funnily enough in an SNP area, and I seem to recall that when they were rumoured to be closing the SNP were amoungst the most vociferous in arguing for their retention as they pump so much money into the area. Then again, you can always recruit time served Scots into the Scottish Army I suppose, and the other forces. How would you train them though? Im sure HMG wouldnt just release all Scots signed up to the UK AF. Then of course you will have to set up training facilities etc..............
  4. Mig 21 Lancer I believe. Romanian is right though.
  5. Peter Is any of this Scottish Defence plan written down? I would be interested to see how big the whole force is to be and its composition. All I can find on the Net is mad ravings of intent. It’s hard to try and not be dismissive. I have served in the UK Military for 21 years. I have served alongside many of the smaller nations. I have also served in peacekeeping missions such as Kosovo alongside the Irish and Norwegian Armies. The Irish analogy is a good one as it would probably be about what Scotland could aim for. They have a grand total of 8500 military personnel of which approximately 800 serve in overseas peacekeeping roles at any one time. They do not have an Air Force and have just 7 ships, none larger than 1800 tonnes (I believe). Is this the future for Scotland? Also as I understand it an SNP Government would pull out of NATO as well? This seems strange as most European nations are clamoring to get into NATO. Then you have the no nuclear weapons on Scottish soil policy, oh and a mad plan to resurrect disbanded Regiments, also I suppose you would have to pay all the military pensions of every one of the former members of the military living in Scotland? So you see, the more I think about it the dafter it all seems….. [ November 10, 2005, 04:12 AM: Message edited by: GSX ]
  6. You keep making these bland statements without proof? Were you with me in Seirra Leone then? What was your unit. I for one was glad that when I was in my Landie I could call on a Harrier for support and not the Irish air force (which doesnt exist). Peacekeeping is for small nations who think they would maybe like to contribute without getting hurt. Actuall warfighting is for dedicated nations that do contribute. I predict your Scottish Army would be filled with parsimonious idiots, while the real men would join the UK Army as is.
  7. I'm sorry mate, but you totally dont have a clue about the British military or its projects or its ethos. The Tornado is a fine aircraft, the GR4 is more than capable of hitting targets and doing recce. The GR4 is often called upon to do tasks in the ME that no US aircraft can. As for the Nimrod, it is the premier Western anti-sub platform and runs ring around its peers. As for other roles, it out performs most. The Tornado ADV is also a fine interceptor. Note the interceptor caveat there. Its not a dogfighter and it has been adapted to new missiles lately to remain very capable. Please dont denigrate the UK armed forces for your personall unsupported vision of an independent Scotland. Most, like me, dont want it and feel that the UK is the UK. In sum, your fantasy world of a Scots military is just that....
  8. LOL, you get even funnier!!!! Those guys that join the British forces arent going to join the Irish Army!!! Sorry, Scottish Army.... The SNP, and you, are living in cloud Cuckoo land Im afraid. Im Scottish, Im proud to be British. Together we are Geat, divided we are ****e!
  9. What are we having this conversation about? CMSF is not Iraq. Remember this please....................
  10. Here is a start point for your search. SAW - by FN..... http://world.guns.ru/machine/mg17-e.htm
  11. You know the best thing here. The news that I can use my mousewheel to zoom. I dont care about anything else, thank you BF for entering 21st Century gaming and making my day. Oh when youclick on the PDA thing, do you get the map?
  12. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha and HA! An independant Scots Army indeed, no one would bloody join it! Sorry, this is a bit out of thread, but I fell off ma chair laughing at this.......... We would end up with a poor mans version of the Irish Army. Thanks for the laugh though.....
  13. Imagine the variety of the scenarios. Take this house. 2 take this house, 3 take this house, 4 you get what I mean........ I imagine after scenario 3 I may go out and watch some paint dry.
  14. True or not, I remember the US scrambling to get forces "in theater" as quickly as possible. The fact that it wasn't as quickly as needed was one of the things that made military planners think "hmmmm... maybe we need something in between Light and Heavy". The Cold War ended and the debate about large conventional forces, prepositioned for immediate use, became more and more unlikely as the years went on. Kosovo came along and, from what I can tell, that decided it. So... since Desert Shield was one of the reasons for the eventual Transformation, including Stryker Brigades, I think it is safe to say that if such a force existed in 1990 it would have been rushed to Saudi Arabia. 15. For example, once the tires are out, does that mean it has to withdraw?
  16. Sorry all I did was hit Stryker in my search engine. It may be biased I suppose, but some of it, if you wade through it rings a bit true.
  17. I thought Id dig out some info on the beast, apologies if its been done already. http://www.military.com/soldiertech/0,14632,Soldiertech_Stryker2,,00.html And loads here: http://www.combatreform.com/lavdanger.htm [ October 22, 2005, 09:58 AM: Message edited by: GSX ]
  18. Yes I suppose you are right there. I just have a feeling that the trial will do more harm than good for our cause.
  19. I dont doubt that at all, as I said I will try it. But a Stryker force would not be commited on day 1 of a high intensity campaign. APCs are not high intensity warfare vehicles, thats not what Stryker was designed for. They were designed (in this context) to be air portable, the first into a bush war type situation (and I dont mean GWB there). Get in, take on the limited capability bad guys and wait for the heavy stuff to arrive if needed. There were no Styker type units at the point of the spear in any of the recent Desert or other wars. But, and I do mean this, the premise of the game does grip me. I think it will be a great leap from CMx1 and am looking forward to the demo. I dont want total realism from a game anyway.
  20. Any government that is not your friend is your enemy. Do you go by that statement in real life? Europe my friend has had nothing to defend itself from for at least ten years, there are other reasons that the US, and the UK for that matter still have bases in the area. And it is the US that has allowed Mr Saddam to have his ridiculous antics. The best thing that should have happened when they found him was to say he was killed in a gun battle and just dissapeared him. Now he has his day in court he can tell all about how we in the West supported him and gave him his WMD. All that will happen now is that he gets to be an Islamic martyr that will do our cuase no good at all. Maybe you should take a realism pill.
  21. Cheers Steve, so are you saying I would just have to take a street corner etc, rather than the whole town then. That makes sense I think. Will ladders be available in FIBUA? Its our preferred method of ingress. Oops, sorry there. Its not UK, US have diffrent methods. Ignore that.
  22. I agree with BFC in one area, that is by the time any Stryker force was committed, the Air and Armoured threat would be nullified. What I find hard to accept is that by the time a Stryker force showed up it wouldnt be at the insurgency stage. That needs civillians, asymetric warfare, which keeps being bandied about is all about the civillian element. But there are no civies in CMSF. So who will the irregulars hide behind. No-one obviously. I have the feeling that this is being designed as primarily a 1 player game, or a Blue team game, while thats not necessarily a bad thing, I just wish if it were so, we could have the courtesy of being told that. I will try it, no matter what the angle but at least be up front with us.
  23. How did you know I was from the far North of the glorious 51st State? Seriously though, I can put you onto guys who have seen real action and not been cowering in their basha like me! Ah the skirl of the pipes.....................
