  1. If you have CMMOS, you can use it in conjunction with some of the mod options on one of the Anthology discs (I haven't done it). I use the folders which have mods and cut and paste them into my Bitmap folder. I simply haven't taken the time to figure out the utility or install it. The mods on the disc are obviously NOT exhaustive. David Inglett from this forum has a wonderful site, CMMODS.COM where you can download mod folders and paste them into your bitmap folder for the game -- for free! If you do not save and rename the original bitmap folder, though, you will not be able to get original graphics for any units without removing and re-installing the game. So copy the BMP folder and rename it something like "BMP originals" and then you can start dropping mods into the CMBB BMP folder. Have fun, Gdog.
  2. Actually, the CMMOS utility AND separate cut-and-paste mods in folders are available on one of the CDs that come with the Anthology. The ones in the folders have to be installed by you (like downloading files from CMMODS web site). In other words, CMBB Anthology (which I have) has the extra scenarios on the CMBB disc (1 of 3 discs that comes with the game) AND the mod utility (which you already have), AND folders with CMBB mods that you can unzip and paste into your Bit Map folder in the game program folder. I would advise you to copy the original folder of Bit Maps so that you don't have to reinstall the game if you want to remove mods you get tired of (that is, return to the original artwork for uniforms, terrain, or vehicles). Thankfully, there are instructions for all of this on the CD for CMBB (I think it is the CMBB CD). BTW, the CDV discs for the CM series is a GREAT deal - I paid $15 for all three games (which would go for $60 or $70 here at BFC). Also, you get some GREAT mods and the mod utility! I hate saying that, because I really love battlefront, but they seem to be okay with it as they have posted pro-CDV messages on their forums.
  3. Hey Harry, Sorry to hear about your problems with Vista and wargaming! I bought a new system at Costco with Vista and returned it the next day. I hated it altogether, and besides EVERYTHING I do on a computer can be done just fine with XP. So, I ordered a powerful system from Newegg.com for $900. They even threw in a 17" LCD! Specs: XP Pro, 1 Gig of RAM, 300 Gigs of HD, GeForce 7600 XT card, and 2.4 MgHz (DVD rom/CD too). If you can settle for that for everything YOU do, then do it (if you can return the Vista OS and PC). Once the vista problems are figured out in 1 or 2 years, you can upgrade. In the meantime, I am very pleased with ZERO problems with XP and Combat Mission. Works like a charm and XP has been very stable for me. In 6 months my computer hasn't even crashed!
  4. That's funny. I never thought of that possibility. Some guys are now depressed again.
  5. The CMC beta forum has caught fire, if you haven't noticed. There were 2060 posts at the end of last week and now there are 2078. Big difference, lots of chatter. I believe we're on the brink....
  6. 4 more posts this week in the CMC forum. Hmmmmmmm.
  7. Another post on the CMC Beta forum! The heart continues to beat with increasing pace. I know, it's barely alive, but it's beating!
  8. The only improvements that can be made are the graphics, and they are good enough for me to live with. The Cromwells! I love Cromwells and would like to see them as wells at the KTs and M-36s. Oh, well, we have just about everything in CMETO (CMAK mod) and CMBB.
  9. Sounds good. I have the files ready to e-mail. He had given me the link and it didn't work (when I tried the other night). Just let me know.
  10. Okay, Wittman......I tried the link and the file is no longer available; however...I have a sound map to the MG 42 sounds and can e-mail the exact files for your perusal. I JUST NEED YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS.
  11. Herr Wittman, You're not going to believe this, but I actually communicated with Ncrawler myself about 4 months ago and he wrote this to me: The file NC_CMBB.zip is indeed my earlier mod for CMBB. I don't think that I ever released the CMAK mod, so you will be the only one besides myself that has it... You can get it from here: http://rapidshare.com/files/42747081/CMAK_Sound_Mod.zip.html I knew I got it from somewhere! I hope it's still available.
  12. Very good Dandelion. I actually remember reading the bit about the 29 meters simulating the men getting in close. When you get over 40 years old you forget a lot of things you once knew!! BTW, I used a flamethrower team in a PBEM game against a friend who was tenaciously holding a building with three veteran Russian squads. I could not break the hold. However, this last turn, a Flamethrower of mine moved up and, while two of my squads kept the Russians engaged in a firefight, the FT torched the whole building. It was amazing. After the second burst, the Russian squads (all of them) ran out of the building. I like them if you use them carefully.
  13. Herr Wittman: Go to CMMODS.COM. I think I got them there for both CMBB and CMAK; that is, I'm sure I got them for CMBB, but THINK I got them for CMAK too. The search options will allow you to find it under 'sound mods' or 'Ncrawler', if I remember correctly.
  14. I've always wondered about the 30 meters or less range. Isn't that kind of far to be chucking satchel charnges? Just wondering what you guys think and whether this was possible...
  15. _________________________________________________ This was posted in November 2006. 11 months ago. There's reason to hope that release might be any day now. Would BFC not tell us if they have scrapped CMC? Have they ever kept us waiting on something good, left us completely in the dark, and then failed to deliver AND not say anything about it? I'm still optimistic in spite of the VERY long wait. CMx1 still rules (CMAK-CMBB) and they know there's a LOT of us guys who still love and play it. I can wait a little longer, but a little information from the programmers would be nice.
  16. I can't believe how many guys who love combat mission have NOT done this mod (CMETO). IT's so simple and worth the 20 minutes or so. Two games in one (CMAK and CMETO on CMAK's game engine). Thanks David!
  17. THANKS to BOB Millard (AKA BRITISH TOMMY) for introducing me to the game a few years ago! Cheers mate! Combat Mission is the best wargame (CMBO/CMAK/CMBB - especially the latter two) to ever come out, as far as I know. The combination of historical units and situations, the variety of nations represented, the depth of tactics, replayability, and play options (from TCP to PBEM) make this the best all around wargame of all time. Not to mention the ability to create scenarios! Oh, and CMETO, the modification of CMAK which covers CMBO scenarios and the European Theatre of Ops (France, Germany, Belgium, etc), is fantastic. Until CMx1 is topped, I'm sticking with it. P.S. Like Philippe said though, an updated version of CMBO with King Tigers and M-36 Jacksons would be nice.
  18. Totally agree with CID. With mods being available through various means, we also have substantially more eyecandy than the stock versions of the game. All said, for the history buff and tactician, these games (combat mission series) are the finest to date that can be found anywhere in my humble opinion. The engine also allows for the creation of an endless variety of custom scenarios, which the CM community has used to the fullest extent. Combat Mission is a world in itself and I cannot imagine it being topped in the near future.
  19. P.S. to Skellen..... I did not see that there is a General Forum. Whoops.
  20. He knew he was listening to music written by Jewish composers? Interesting. I watched Downfall last night. The reviews on Amazon are extremely positive; of 295 reviews, 278 were either five stars out of five (234) or four stars (44). Most cite the acting of Ganz. Some reviewers criticized the lack of commentary on the holocaust and the 'human' depiction of Hitler. However, I don't believe those in the Bunker spent a lot of time talking about the Jews those last few weeks, with Germany crumbling around them and the Russians down the street. Sadly, Hitler WAS a human and a quintessential example of the worst of the human family. Most of us know going into such a movie as Downfall what he was responsible for (along with his Nazi henchmen). So, it wasn't so important to me that the producers included clear presentations of his supremacist/racist beliefs (though some of the dialogue brings these out).
  21. Excuse me if this is not the right place for this, but I don't know where else to post it and I think some, if not all of you men, will appreciate the information. I have two movies to commend that are very good: The Lost Battalion (WWI). Private-Ryan like battle scenes and good story. A real surprise (not well known, but very well done it appears). "Downfall". This one is about the fall of the Third Reich and the last days of Hitler in the bunker. This is an impressive film. The main actor, Bruno Ganz, has a distinguished acting career and is AMAZING as Hitler. He looks very much like him, too. It's all in German with subtitles as the actors are all German. Neither film is 'perfect' in my opinion (what film is?). However, I believe most of you on this forum will find them very engrossing. They are well-crafted, well-acted, and seemingly historically accurate for the most part (I'm less sure about this with regard to the Lost Battalion). Happy viewing.

  23. Dunhill 06: I could watch these all day. They are excellent. GREAT JOB Enzo Barracuda!!!! VERY cool. Love the big movie music soundtrack. Where are they from (the Citadel trailers)?
  24. Michael: you wrote regarding my statement, "Certainly Wittman's victories were in a vehicle that, overall, was better than all (or most) of the allied vehicles it faced": I don't get that from that article at all. At this point, I am not making my comment with the article in view. The Tiger was better than most of the vehicles it faced and Wittman had most of his kills in the Tiger didn't he? The Stug kills were through '42, right? The Russian opponents he faced were sub par (mostly green as I understand it) and the early model T-34 had it's problems as well with one of the men in the turret doubling as gunner and loader (the commander?); also they lacked radios, so I've read. The better Russian tanks and more experienced commanders in greater numbers came later. Regardless, I admit his feats while commanding a STUG with the shorty '75' were impressive; but I think they are mitigated a bit in that he was facing lesser opponents at that point of the Eastern front war. You also wrote, "Many models of Sherman tank had as much frontal armour, or more, than the Tiger, were more mechanically reliable, certainly built in larger numbers. Their guns were mostly pathetically weak, and doctrinal issue forced them to fight tank-vs.-tank battles that they were unprepared for." Yes. I don't know if "many" models of Shermans had more than 4 inches of frontal armour (the Jumbo Sherman did). In any event, I would say that if both tanks meet in the battlefield (i.e., don't break down), the Sherman is generally in big trouble. As you noted, weaker gun and almost always the weaker armour. The Shermans that were up-armoured were not helped much by the increased plates, because the fausts and Panther/Tiger guns could STILL easily penetrate them. You wrote: "But artillery, and brave men in all the services, won the Second World War, and so tank vs. tank comparisons seem a bit beside the point in any event." Yes, they did win the war by way of combined arms. However, the "point" of the article was a tank commander to tank commander comparison, primarily. It's a valid comparison, but limited I agree because of the many factors to consider as you and others have noted in this post! In the final analysis, we both come to the same conclusion I think. BTW, are you the one that does all those amazing mods for CM under the name "Mikie D"? I've downloaded about 30 of them. They are great. THANKS! What a visual improvement. One more thing, Michael: when you say in the mod picture previews, "for CMAK", does that include "CMETO"?
