  1. I went to the Moon once. It was OK, not great. I think CMx10 should be Astronuts vs. Lobsters of Doom. Amazing what a Gin-Tonic does for your cleverness at 3am...
  2. Wow, that was some read! Brings to mind a ton of questions, but being that I'm more interested in seeing the game developed then having Steve type sweet details out for me all night long, I'll limit it to three 1) Are top-down assaults possible? 2) Will 'Martyr' troops be modeled? 3) Will said Martyr or even regular forces be able to set up barricades INSIDE houses? Crazy, crazy stuff...my mind is spinning with possibilities. Thx Steve and BFC team!
  3. Just those three sentences make me drool already...yes, this will be a new scale of realism indeed! Seems like many of us will need to read that AAR you posted several times over and memorize the lessons real-life warriors learned the hard way.
  4. I knew mentioning Peng would lure Steve to this thread like a hungry shark is lured by spilt blood in the ocean Thx for the answers, very very interesting to be sure! Can you clarify what exactly you mean by 'directions'? Am I correct in assuming this means which way the building can be rotated or something? Another more detail-oritented question: will ditches be represented as 3D indentations in the landscape, or as the Snikers-bar-esque tiles like currently? If so, I imagine it would give other features like craters and field latrines a much more natural appearence Oh and any word on 'flavor' objects like the aforementioned abandoned merchant cart or burning automobile?
  5. Gawd, do we have to insult Peng or somefink to get attention? *BUMP*
  6. *bump* Keep those terrain questions coming
  7. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0811727297/104-9754317-4862369?v=glance This is a great book. Deals with lots of tactical aspects and ideas that should, in theory, be fully applicable to CMSF.
  8. @ the whole post, but I thought that one particular sentence was especially retarded.
  9. On a map that looks like these, you might be lucky to be able to see down the block, not to even mention maximum range: Unless you were a sniper on that hill Can you imagine trying to take this Citadel without air support? Really looking forward to that Mid-Eastern flair!
  10. WOOT! I s'pose next summer will see me even more pale and sun-deprived then this summer, much to the dismay of my girlfriend. *looks at left hand* Sorry baby.
  11. You know, something tells me that if anything, map sizes might be smaller. I base this assumption on the following: 1) The scale of CMSF is smaller then the CMx1 games. 2) The style of fighting we're likely to see highlights dismounted infantry/combined arms action, with teams leap-frogging under fire in environments that make movement slow and painful. 3) The extended killing ranges of modern missiles/armor might be a good reason for BFC not to make large maps, thus making the game more balanced. I mean, do we REALLY want to sit around and pick off T-72's from 4 clicks away and then spend the rest of the battle moving troops towards objective flags?
  12. It's been a fun day, I know many of us are very excited to learn more in a week, when the website is launched. Since Steve seems to be responding a lot lately, I figure I might ask this now before we see for ourselves later. I realise the urban environment will be 'much more detailed', but I would most like to know HOW much more detailed This is a poor picture of Damascus, the Syrian capital, from a nearby hill. Looks ok...until you look at a map Notice all those little alleys leading to no-where! The new, smaller tiles will make a lot more things possible - but will terrain object like merchant carts, abandoned/destroyed cars, etc. be modeled? Can we get a general approximation of what sort of details can and cannot be added, due to engine or time restraints? It truly seems to me that the urban environment in CMSF should amaze us, after the unrealistic appearence of cities in the CMx1 games. Oh, and here is a cool link with a bunch of photos of various Syrian cities: http://www.homsonline.com/PhotoGallery.htm
  13. And I would like to THANK BFC for CMx5: Orcs vs Elves! That will 0\/\/N Warcraft fo' shizzy!
  14. According to the 'Globalsecurity.com' link hellfish included with his kick-ass post, the Syrians are estimated to have some 4000 ATGW! That's more then enough to rattle any would-be gung ho M1A1 commanders. Even though 3000 of those are aging Saggers, there are also some 800 Kornets. This is what the same site had to say about their use in GW2: During the 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom, US troops encountered an unanticipated, and formidable, weapon in the Iraqi arsenal -- Russian-built Kornet antitank missiles. Iraqi soldiers used the wire-guided missile system against American tanks, but the US military previously did not know they possessed. It emerged as the Iraqis' most effective direct-fire weapon against U.S. armor in the desert of southern Iraq. Iraqi commandos traveling in three-man teams dressed in black civilian robes and riding in Nissan pickup trucks moved against the flanks of columns of armor from the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division and launched broadside attacks from several kilometers away using the system. Those attacks had disabled at least two Abrahms tanks and one Bradley armored troop carrier in the opening week of the war. US military intelligence officials were extremely interested in capturing one of the missiles intact. They also instructed American soldiers who destroy one of the Kornet launchers to save the remains of the system for close inspection. Also, the Syrians have 200 German-made Milans. 15. I don't think this has been asked yet... Whats the state of current progress? This is the Alpha build I realise, but are the core features of the game already coded after 2 years? I'm sure coding an entirely new engine is more complex then I imagine, but it seems to me logical to assume that main features and framework were build from the ground up first of all, requiring the most time, and now mainly the graphical representation is left for creation. Am I off the mark BFC? Doubt we'll see a demo earlier then Q1, 2006 - or is it Q2?
  16. LOL @ this entire thread. I think if satisfying forum h00rs was the only thing keeping BFC in business, they would have filed for bankrupcy years ago.
  17. I second that this would be a cool little feature to add more personality. Private Dubya here is being sent to investigate reports of suicide bombing 'evil doers'. Note that Pvt. Dubya doesn't require the standard issue infantry helmet, as his skull armor is more then thick enough to offer sufficient protection. [ October 08, 2005, 03:08 PM: Message edited by: Ivan Drago ]
  18. Thanks for the answers Steve...too bad about a lack of modern Russian/Chinese equipment, but I guess my love of armored combat will be somewhat sated by Blue/Blue matchups Especially when I can pit modern West Euro tanks against the Americans when the modules are released Like I said, I can't wait to see more terrain details. The soldiers and vehicles look amazing - I know they are something like 2000 polygons per soldier. How many polygons will buildings have, comparatively? Maybe a stupid questions since there's a larger variety of building sizes now...
  19. I mentioned this in the offical 'comment' thread. I take a positive view of it however - if a version is deemed good enough for real-world militaries, that is only good news for everyone (BFC and their customers).
  20. Im pretty sure BFC has no interest in modeling that kind of scenario. Wouldn't be fun. Instead, they are likely to focus on the kinds of scenarios that make the papers, where U.S. forces get shot and suffer casualties, despite technological superiority. Hmm...do the Syrians have any sort of dedicated AA weapons systems that actually work? I'm betting probably so. Maybe I'm totally wrong in thinking this, but I'm sure there are plenty of times where the first elements of a combat formation don't have access to immediate air support en masse.
  21. OK, some brief Question(s) I just thought up: I realise urban combat will be a big part of the game, but what sort of armored enemy units will make an appearence? Will the fictional Syrian foe have access to only relatively old Soviet equipment (t-72's) or more modern armor (t-90's)? Will they be outfitted with reactive type armor (despite what Steve said about such armor in a recent thread)? Will the Syrians be alone in their struggle against NATO or are any other possible nationalities modeled? Don't all jump on me for failing to realise some groggish detail about what was exported to what country or not, I still have to get into the habit of visiting more modern-warfare news sources...
  22. Looks real great, Im more then satisfied. Wonder if the military might take an interest in it as an officer-training tool once the word gets out more...? Seems to be aiming for better realism then anything else out there, both visually and game-play wise.
  23. I'm just here to laugh and point at the disappointed people. *points* Nyuck-nyuck-nyuck
