  1. I am trying Niessuh's mod now. My previous mod was only for grass.

I am finding it hard to get a view like in the top part of his preview on the Repository: http://www.battlefront.com/components/com_remository_files/file_image_1177/img_1177_01.jpg

I know it is set up to clear the lines close to you. Maybe I need to play around with the higher camera views more. But anytime I navigate to move around the map it clears the near lines of course. Is there some way to go over the map without triggering the loss of the nearby grid lines?

    Thanks,

    Gerry

  2. Hello Jon et al.

You are not misreading what I wrote. At the same time I am not asking for Levels as in ASL.

So a request from me then for you Jon, Mikey, and mj. Can you give me some guidance on how you go about reading the lay of the land. I go down as far as level 2 mostly and up to higher levels to get a picture of the road network and bocage, etc. Even if I find some hiding spots it's going to be hard to remember them all. And it's hard to remember where all the holes are in the bocage. I try and focus on the major terrain features. However, I find it hard to start any battle. I am overwhelmed I guess with: 1) all the micromanagement I will have to do to try and compete; and 2) the difficulty in seeing a 3D world through a screen.

The main thing is to move my units over the terrain and this is where it is really daunting for me. Assume you started with 4 platoons and say that is an average of 4 units each (3 squads and 1 HQ). So now we have 16 units and there will be support weapons also. And maybe tanks. And this is not even a big scenario. So as not to get wasted via artillery and MGs I split the squads into teams.

So in this smallish scenario I now have around 50 units to manage. The system is amazing in terms of graphics, detail, etc. But I hope you can understand where I am coming from. I want so much to enjoy the system. And the announcements really makes one excited. But I am intimidated when I open most scenarios.

    Any help appreciated.

  3. Hello:

I see what MikeyD is saying. But it makes the game very hard for me to play. When I look at a map I see what looks like a flat field. Yet, when I move my troops to the hedge/bocage before it and set up a MG, their LOS is blocked maybe 30 feet into the field.

I know we can plot a waypoint and then try a target from there. But there are so many units to do this for. It becomes an awful lot of work. I understand it is real. But I would prefer to get rid of some of these small undulations and just have the elevations deal more with major hills and valleys.

I even have a mod for gridded grass and I am finding it hard to see these small undulations. Maybe some of us need a detailed video tutorial from one of you expert players on some of these tricky issues.

Sorry for the mini-rant but I am really struggling with the amount of work in the game. On the other hand, there is all this super content coming down the line...

  4. Got a great giggle out of this! The thought of a wargamer exposing themselves?! Did the bet state that it had to be to the poor neighbors?

    Gerry

I'm more interested in seeing if CMFI passes the Kettler test than i am in playing the actual game, this is because i have a bet with a friend, so if it does, i'm definitely going to be arrested for exposing myself in public, however i'm pretty confident it won't, and my neighbours will be safe. :)
  5. Hello:

For me the timing of the announcements is amazing. I was thinking of giving up CM due to the large amount of work/micromanagement from my perspective. I had spent a week or more evaluating another game and was close to pulling the trigger.

Now this happens. With such wonderful content down the road, I am going to try and hang in there for a while more.

Upgrades are a wonderful idea. I also appreciate the smaller things like icons for engineers, etc. Hopefully this will help me navigate the system a bit better.

And the EF! So my thread looking for recommendations for East Front books was not totally crazy.

  6. Hello All:

Thanks to all. I am enjoying reading Hitler Moves East 1941-1943 by Paul Carell at the moment. It is a mix of big picture and accounts of some lower-level actions as part of an operation. Adds a bit of color. It is quite old though and I am not sure of its reputation.

  7. Hello All:

I would like some thoughts on these before buying. I have checked some samples, e.g. Barbarossa Derailed. They seem dry, as in Div X moved here, etc. He doesn't seem to highlight the personalities involved or have any personal stories intermingled with the army movements?

Are there other authors you would recommend instead for the Eastern Front?

    Thanks,

    Gerry

  8. Hello All:

This is something that happens me when just a part of my forces start on the map, let's say one platoon. (I like the partial force starting out in a way as the setup area is usually small and I also don't feel overwhelmed as I only have a few units to manage initially). The setup area is in a corner so I usually send out scouts in 2 or three directions. Depending on what happens I may send some teams down after the scouts. And you can see what is happening. In bocage country, a third or at least a half of my force will be out of command. It gets messy then when reinforcements start arriving also.

Any suggestions for how to avoid or fix this, but still be able to probe more than one direction initially? Maybe after all platoons are on the map I needed to take a few turns to regroup those forces that get out of command rather that keep sending them forward.?

    Thanks,

    Gerry

  9. Appreciate the answers. A follow-up question:

I have quite a few of these SPWs with loaded infantry starting off in the mission and more arriving as reinforcements. No separate infantry. Based on Womble's comment I wondering am I using them right. The mission is set in bocage country. So I have been dismounting the infantry to scout. It just seems too dangerous to ride off into the unknown with a loaded SPW. Am I on the right track here, especially in bocage country? And is the most I can get from these SPWs is some MG fire support for the infantry advancing?

    Thanks,

    Gerry

  10. Hello:

Have a few of these in a mission. When I dismounted the infantry I noticed that some of them seem to just have a driver. So the MG goes unused. If I put a team back in the vehicle, will they automatically man the MG?

Also I received some more as reinforcements and now I see that some of them have a Driver and Gunner. Others just have a driver. Is that normal.

    Thanks in advance,

    Gerry

  11. By TCS do you mean Tactical Combat Series by MMP/Gamers?

    Thanks for the interesting reply.

    Gerry

    ...

Part of why I am interested in the TCS system is you could fight a very good campaign battle on a couple very large maps that would have supply and C&C issues included, reinforcement schedules, OBA allotment complications etc with the whole battle being say a 2 -3 day campaign versus a months long monster battle that you have to pick and choose which battles to play out in CM. At TCS scale, the entire battle could be fought at the CM level. Still an idea I am threshing out but it seems feasible and the game rules allow it to be applied to virtually any battle you have a map and OoB for. ...
