Hello All:
Looking at the screenshots it seems the maps are much more open and I am happy about that. I am wondering is that hedge or low bocage in the screenshots?
Thanks,
Gerry

Hello:
Is this what you mean Erwin? Playing RtM and this happened after about 100m. One of 4 tanks! So that's quite a hit. They had to move onto the road and it seems the problem is the area between road and off-road.

From the links provided here, it looks like they were an experienced unit by the time they got to Normandy. Spent 41-43 on East Front. So maybe someone will do a campaign for them in that location also when we get to the East Front. Would be a nice way of linking formations and history.

Which operations of the ones I listed above did the 2.Panzer Division take part in?
Thanks,
Gerry

Hello:
Can anyone tell which operation(s) relate(s) to the German Campaign in the Commonwealth module (Totalize, Tractable, Windsor, Charnwood, Goodwood??)?
Or maybe to missions in the module?
Thanks in advance,
Gerry

Anyone read "The Battle of the Generals: The Untold Story of the Falaise Pocket-The Campaign That Should Have Won World War II"? Any thoughts (other than that's a long title)?
Thanks,

True. But wouldn't they have a better idea than us, the gamers, as they are in the real 3D environment?
And if they hadn't LOS wouldn't they shuffle around until they had made a best effort to get LOS to a certain point? Our troops don't have that intelligence so a tool would make up for that.
Gerry
Yeh, you watch footage from WWII of soldiers using their LOS tools to judge whether the position they're planning to occupy will have a proper field of fire. -
As Diane said to Sam in Cheers, you have a way with word.

Hello:
Can you save in the middle of your Command Phase, load it up later, and finish giving orders?
Thanks,

In gaming systems like this, I think there is a collecting element to it also. It's probably not possible for people to play all the scenarios/campaigns they have. Nothing wrong with collecting things like the historical ASL modules. I think people that play tactical wargames, computer or otherwise, love maps and reading about the campaigns. And those maps are lovely. Some great ideas there too for CMBN campaigns - not saying there is not enough other inspiration. I hope down the road that someone creates a CMBN Operation Veritable campaign for example.
CMBN players have the same cravings for new stuff as ASL players, to highlight another common trait. I am a slow player so I cannot imagine how anyone has played all the CMBN stuff yet. And still everyone cannot wait for the CW module!
Take care,
Gerry
I used to play ASL, but not often. Now, with CMxx and everything else going on in life (tempo seems to've increased), I play CM and just collect ASL. -
I thought he said the only way to detect mines is to trip over them. At that point then, the engineers can mark them. Is that correct?

Is this the Road to Montebourg Campaign? Just starting it and didn't know there was a v2.

I don't think it is correct that it takes 4 files per minute/turn. There are a few extra ones at the beginning (due to setting passwords I think) but I think it is one file per minute after that.

Can anyone help me with my second question?
"2) Also, when you see something like this, 2/505 PIR, does that mean the 2nd Battalion of the 505 PIR Regiment? And is that the only place the "/" notation is used?"
Just noticed other examples in an Operation Epsom book:
II/12th SS Panzers
Is this the same meaning as above?
Thanks as always for the informative answers.

Are CC..s the same as the German Kamfgruppe?

Hello:
Need to educate myself so as to better understand briefings and books. I have found a hierarchy on Wikipedia:
---------------------------------
army group, front
army
corps
division
brigade
regiment or group
infantry battalion, U.S. Cavalry squadron, Commonwealth armoured regiment
infantry company, artillery battery, U.S. Cavalry troop, or Commonwealth armour or combat engineering squadron
platoon or Commonwealth troop
section or patrol
squad or crew
----------------------
1) Is this correct or can someone recommend a site that covers this better.
2) Also, when you see something like this, 2/505 PIR, does that mean the 2nd Battalion of the 505 PIR Regiment? And is that the only place the "/" notation is used?
Thanks,
Gerry

What is the tank in Pic 24. Is it longer than most tanks and why does it have so much space behind the turret?
Thanks, Gerry

In Beevor's book, he talks a few times about Allied Air attacks thinking that they had devastating results on armored units but when the area was investigated later it showed that most damage had not come from the air attacks. Air Command was not happy. Curious if that was a standard protocol to investigate what caused damage to enemy tanks?
Of course air power did stop the movement of German armor during the daytime.

"The game already tells you exactly who can see what."
I am not sure that is true. I had an ATG highlighted as a I watched a replay of how they went to meet their maker. A Stuart came into view (? icon changed to tank icon), and for the next 20 secs, the ATG did nothing even though it seems they see the tank.
The buttoned-up Stuart blew them to kingdom come. It is possible the gun barrel was stuck in the bocage and couldn't move. I cannot be sure.

Hello All:
Wondering what most of you play? I really like the idea of the historical campaigns but for some reason I cannot seem to stick with one. It seems I need a human opponent to really get into it and as we don't have H2H campaign play I am just playing scenarios using PBEM now.
Wondering if you are like this or if you can get really into campaign play against the AI.
Thanks,
Gerry

I just noticed another series on Amazon, named "Battle Zone Normandy". It has books on Epsom and Falaise Pocket.
Anyone have any experience with this series?
Thanks,

Hello All:
So far I have read 2 books on Normandy. One was by Beevor and I am able to handle the detail level in that. I wished there were more maps.
I would like to do some reading for the commonwealth module and especially for the 2 campaigns that Wodin pointed to. I wonder if I get books that go down to the level of one operation, as in Operation Epsom, if the detail will be overwhelming? The only reference I have for you is the Beevor book to help me in terms of detail level.
1) What are good reads for Epsom? I have seen these 3 at Amazon. Any thoughts on these or others?
Operation Epsom (Battle Zone Normandy) by Lloyd Clark
OPERATION EPSOM - OVER THE BATTLEFIELD by Ian Daglish
OPERATION EPSOM (Battleground Europe) by Tim Saunders
2) What are good reads for Falaise?
3) Are there single books that treat most of what is in the area of the commonwealth module?
Thanks in advance,
Gerry

I think A Few Good Men have ongoing campaigns where multiple battles are generated and fought by different pairs. Maybe you have seen this already? If not, you might want to peruse their process.

CW Module Maps - Hedge or Low Bocage
in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Posted
I was thinking specifically in some of the screenshots, like shot #2. What is represented there, a hedge or low bocage?
I obviously haven't figured out the difference yet but as far as I remember all scenarios I have played have had bocage but no hedges. So I have little or no practice telling the difference.
Thanks,
Gerry
