  1. Don't post anymore. This Ladder is closed....
  2. Rambo > no hard feelings. (ps; why maintain a ladder when some people are planning another behind your back ? ) Everyone > Goodluck with the new ladder.
  3. There was a good reason that the german's hold on that long in normandy. Despite several attempts by monty at Caen or in the U.S. region. The germans simply filled the gap with Panzer's. most of them positioned in the Caen region, since it was the most open terrain. Villers-Bocage comes in mind with the Wittmann action. anyway, those days the Panthers and Tigers were clearly superior to any Allied Tank availible then. However, every lost panzer was lost. reserves where non to very little where the allies kept unloading large amounts of supply, tanks, men....everthing. Also there was A.H., who actions ensured heavy losses of equipment and a almost total colapse of the german army in the WEST by september. It was a miracle that they recovered after Falaise and create a complete "new" army in that shor amount of time. Afrika is a good example how well the Allied Armor performed against the germans.
  4. At the Battlefront-series at discovery they tell a whole different story. They calculated that the allies needed at least 4/5 shermans to make a good chance againts a panther/tiger. 1 a 2 to meet head-on, and the rest to outflank it. This was even more the case in the early days/weeks/months after D-day. They didn't have the "jumbo's" and "Fireflies" availible then. Even worse, most Shermans were equiped with the obsulete 75mm. Later on the 76mm became more and more availible to give the Sherman's the much needed punch to have a better change against those "cats". Also the Jumbo's and Fireflies came, but only in small numbers compared to the bulk of the standard, Shermans 75mm/76mm. Air-supremacy gave the Allies the edge. Without it, the allies would have seen a whole different D-day and/or Normandy for that metter. Remember how they broke the lines with Operation "torch". 1000+ bombers lay down a carpet, nearly completely wiping out the Lebenstandard "div".
  5. How important ? let me see, about; 0,000000002 % i gues....
  6. Just a reminder: What you see is what you NOT get.... Look in the manual to see what i mean. De pixels on your screen aren't telling the whole true, as they say....
  7. You could also make the HQ much harder to spot for the enemy.
  8. Thks Rambo, i hear you  so i will stay and maintain the ladder. not only that, i made a proposel for a new ranking system, see liams topic and vote, plz.
  9. Guys, read the other thread from liam, i've made a proposel for a new ranking system. thks comrad, but for the time being i shall continue
  10. Carl: Maybe i can use the webspace from my ISP, 20 megs. also i have HTML skills (can make sites with notepad ) to make a nice site... Anyway, think we should vote for the new rules.
  11. Sure i want a different game. Afterall, how long do you wish yo continue on the same concept. Anyway, you don't understand. my ideal WWII game covers all, from tactics to strategical level. "Across the rhine" came close (it's old now). See, i don't wanna sleep with my squad.I don't want to play a icon-strategic game. I want to play WWII to its fullest.... With detailed maps, a OKW, Sectors, CMBB style battles of engagement. Tanks that not only look like tanks, but also "feel" like it. Not a tank that disappears in another one. Not squads that seems to walk through walls. when making it 3D, do it right or leave it.... We want realism, i see that word comin up many times. But when it comes to trees, water tanks, squads whatever we are satisfied with what we get; unrealistic images.... sorry to be so cru, but that's what it is and nothing else. Sure, the data may be 'realistic" but what we see on the screen isn't.
  12. 88 - Welcome You have just joined the hunt for the Holy Grail of Tactical Perfection. </font>
  13. that's fine , if your interested in mini-games on a platoon /companie scale. But when you're interested in "on to wolga" games, the squad-approach is just too much. With a complete bataljon you don't want to control every single men. Atleast, i don't. I like to keep it playable'that means. A battle must be done in a certain amount of time, say 1 a 2 hours. Instead of putting so much attention in a squad or a single tank, there could be more focus on the Hq/s. So that you have more time for what really matters, set out the lines, deployment etc.etc. and like another game i know, at the same you CAN! control 1 single unit, 1 unit at any given time. Just to get the feeling of being "there". So you take control of one tank, ride/shoot with it, or you contol a squad. I really can't see the joy in controlling 200+ units, one at a time, turn after turn.... and when this micro-managment expands, what do you got? Right, platoon
  14. Gamereport Battle 2 (june/41) After carefully plotted avance, i achieved 2 flags. A minor victory againts a numerous enemy (800 men+, 8 At's, 4 a 5 pillboxes). lost 21 men and 2 vehicles. Only my core-scores are low, ver low, Not one tank killed more then 12 inf, as did my infantry. gues this could be done better to give my troops the much needed Exp. I attacke btw. on the foes sweet spot, where only 2 at's and 2 pillboxes were present. Over the bult to the right the majority of his At's were in very good position to cover his left-flank (centre) where the big flag is. Overal i am satisfied, but no more then that...
  15. One way to achieve better managment (=less work for the player) and still maintain the high level of realism is more CO-control and Platoon control. What i've seen in other Wargames and miss in CMBO/CMBB: 1) Tank-platoon formations like Wegde, echelon left/right, column etc.. -Not availible in CM** 2) Platoon HQ orders like above to make easy line-ups like inline, scout (with a forward point) ,column, march, outflank left/right where the platoon Hq desides where the squads should go, not you. -not availible in CM** 3) A pool where you select your officers based on what you prefer, like a Co Hq with scout-speciality, or a attack specialist, defend-specialst..whatever. And afcource a option to upgrade the Co/Platoon Hq with decorations, start etc. (something like in PG) -Not availible in CM** In sum; Make the game less unit control and more Group control, where the platoons HQ or Tank Commanders can make choices for themselves instead of every single unit standing as a idiot, not knowing what to do and waiting for your input to make a usefull contribution to the effort. Ow yeah, atleast they shoot back. and they duck and hide too when things are getting hot. But's that almost all you can expect. The Co Hq, The Platoon Hq or everyone else, noone have/gets one brilliant idea to assualt that pesky at head on, make a flank mavouvre whatever. It all comes down to you. and that's what's wrong with it. I loved the action in ácross the rhine with the tank-platoons. Give them a contact point, say "probe" or "delaY" and they make contact with enemy units, where they keeped in contact and battled to enemy from a nice distance, whit probe they tried to re-contact themselve. With delay they didn't. Delay was usefull against a advancing enemy, where my tansk make contact , made a few shots and pulled back a little. Great to see how those tactics works, without the need to control every unit on the field. Afcource this requires a much better Ai, and maybe it's just exactly this why it isn't done. Most Ai are stupid, and to get realism the last thing you want is a dumb Ai.... More lessons about group-control: Look at Shogun, total war. Very impressive, to see your army in such detail. and yet you don't have to micro-manage to get a realistic feeling.
  16. If my armor survises, those will be the happy days walk, scum !
  17. Battle-report BCR-game2 well, i am trying a differen tactic now. It needed some "work" Turn 15 of 35: after a small smokescreen i have moved up all my mortars and some Mg34 in nice spots, two platoons are in the field to scout those At's. sofar i MG bunker killed, and a At pillbox spotted. No armor losses sofar only a few men. Score 8%/4% at the moment... My trick to attract his art. worked very well. Lured him with 1 PzIIc on a empty spot, all his ammo depleted in 3 turns, good riddens (my pz IIc survided unscratched ) I am moving very slowly and yet am about 300/400 meters away from the closest flag. Don't think i get them all within given time without heavy losses, so i aim for three of them.
  18. Whaahhabababa Sun or no sun, half-sleepin or not, AT 35 meters you will HEAR A TANK COMIN !!! He fritz, i hear a noise, maybe it's a tank. Huh, what? Theirs of ours ? Hmm, dunno. They all sound the same. Ow well, when you know which sort it is, let me know. For know, let me drink my coffee  ps: the game-engine "cheats". Like most games. This helps to mask the dumbness of the "Ai", whatever that is.....
  19. i have a simple but vey effective in mind; winning standard to start the ladder: 10 points a battle. When one of the players arrives at 100 points, the new rules are going into action: 1) Winning from the Ladder-champ = 100 points 2) Winning from a Top 5 (2-5) player = 80 points 3) playing a draw against the Ladder-champ = 60 points 4) Playing a draw against a Top 5 player = 40 points (these are all wins/draws from players ranked 6 and below) when the ladder-champ wins, he gets a minimum of 10 point vs. any player below 5 and 20 points for beating a top 5 player. when a Top 5 player beats the champ: 50 points and 20 for a draw. When they win against a other Top 5 player = 20 points (draw=zero) Winning vs. lower classed players = 10 points (draw=zero)
  20. no, i don't expect that in 10 minutes. what i do expect is a post in the topic, where someone says he is availible. Maybe i am seeing it wrong on how this works, but i didn't asume you have to be "online" all the time. Infact, i am online most of the time, aldo not on Battlefront.

  22. Where is he ? Does this mean a boost for 'biltaid" ? Oke, now i understand the exp. stuff. There is also something missing i understand. Do i add bonus for a squad that knocks a mortar? Where? Ah, totaly forgotten about the mortart. But they need contact (red line) with the Hq in qusetion, right? ps: i have a bright idea. Maybe you would like to play this map againts me, while i do the russians that could teach me [ May 14, 2003, 01:13 PM: Message edited by: 88mm ]
  23. emerge? you mean, just pass it through? yes/no I rush (fast forward) with all Vehicle/armor just behind the smokescreen. Then unload and positioning my stuff. Only thing is, sometimes you still get shot at, and then my respons is to try to konck it down, send some more tanks to support (not too far forward but still). So my "overwatch" isn't ready yet, it's in the make. Am i making it to far forward? A nice strip of trees/bushes looked good to me to make a "overhead". trouble is it's insight of those pesky At. Thought i could still use it to cover it with smoke. driblets  sorry, my english fails.. Broad? 200 metres ? I aim where i suspect them, behind the smokescreen. And no, i don't fire a battery on a single target. Yes, but where's the overwatch? All my tanks, well 7 or 8 are moving forward.. Besides, most of the time when they are behind they can't see that one AT i wanna kill. Well, dunno. They panic, get shot at go routed.... they see me too Looks i make every single tacticale mistake with every possible unit there exist. And that's weird, in stee panthers i do just those things you mention, inf forward, detect gun, tanks surpress gun, inf kills... Only in CMBB i don't seem to get a good overview of the field, i can't "read the map" as good like i could in Steel Panters.
