  1. hey all, I'm trying to figure out some details on WW2 divisions. There is a lot on the web about all kind of division, so on divisional, regimental and battalion level I have things sorted out. Now for the hard part: What kind of tanks , SP artillery etc (heavy weapons) were used by which division?? (in general) Does any one knows a good site for this?? thanks in advance gr Screeny
  2. '39 and early '40 western campaign would be nice....being Dutch i would love to give it a try to kick to German para's out of my backyard gr Screeny
  3. Dear Lt general, Please re-assign me to a postion as infantery batallion commander without any tanks under my command. Even after studying the literature on tank warfare on Squad level, reading incredible posts on the marvelous Battlefront.com forum on panzer tactics, having commanded the most technical advanced tanks in many PBEM/TCPIP/against AI battles in this war I still SUCK at commanding tanks. Here an example of my unability, it is from my latest PBEM game. After the first little firefights from advancing infantery the feared Churchill tank was spotted. it directly moved behind cover. I had a JagdPanther under my command, which was, as requested, a veteran in the hope the accuracy and speed of fire would be slightly better then a regular. Having a 88 mm long barreld gun (on of the best AT guns produced in the war imho), being a veteran, having a sloped relative strong frontal armor, I was hoping to have a chance against the churchill. I moved reverse out of my hiding position and had the Jagdpanter move in to a frontal attacking position towards the churchill (which was still under cover). re thinking all my previous experiences and posts I read on Pnazer tactics I cleared out first all AT guns which woul dhave LOS on the Jagpanther. After this my Jagd panther moved up under the HUNT command. The Churchill was still hiding at +/- 700 to 800 mtr.when my panzer came out of his hiding position to my surpirse the churchill drove out of his, not towards me but to the right...I had a perfect side/flank shot at this colosal Churchill, he was buttoned down. My veteran crew aimed...and had the first shot. a miss shot, I saw the impact crater 50 mtr behind the churchill. The Churchill was now alarmed, swung his fast turret, towards my JafdPanther aimed , shot Boem...end of my Jagdpanther..in a single shot from the hip so to speak. In my opinion I did everything correct and being aware that this kind of things happen in war, but this kind of bad luck thigs seems to happen to me all the time concerning tanks. I therefor think it is better for the Reich not to assign any more valuable equipment under my command. My best wishes Screeny

  8. Hi all, I have a general arty question that has not much to do with this brlijant game as however there are some real history buffs on this forum I'm asking it anyway What is the difference between a Infantery gun and a AT gun from a technical point of view WAIT!! before you answer that and read on . Infantery is against infantery (duhhh) and AT are for destroying armor like units. But as far as I know this depends on the difference in AMMO these guns use...high explosive vs igh velocity (or other nifty ammo with specific anti AT usage). So what is different in the guns them self???? Why not create/design on gun and depending on what role you'll like to give them, suplly them with the proper ammo....I guess there must be more to it so if soem one knows... Secondly what is a houwitser exactly..in comparison with a "ordinary" infantery gun??? Again from a technical point of view... thanks for the attention. gr Screeny
  9. Hi all, Question on the rarity thing...what are the effects? Units are more expensice...The issue I'm having does it also mean that if you buy a unit with a high rarity that the chances of actually getting it in the field is reduced....I had a few battles with everything on random and teh debate I'm having this missing units are due to a high casulty percentage at NOT because of a high rarity factor. If any one could help me out?? gr Screeny
  10. Yeppers!! ME's , with more or less the same force size on both sides. What if platoon vs platoon both under cover???? use two platoons against his single platoon!!! Well that's the whole trick. With the danger of exposing my tactic here is what I always keep in mind: Most opponents will start of spreading there forces acros there set up zone. 1 platton left, 1 centre, 1 right and probabaly 1 reserve. I place mine conctrated and focused towards a small area which I want to take control of. so instead of having the advantage of 1 of my platoons against 1 squad of his a gammble on 3 of my platoons against 1 of his. Move fast yet covered (The area I attack will almost always have a nice "lane of approach" i.e. nice patches of woods, trees, houses etc from my set up zone to the area to be attacked. Just in case we meet on the battlefield, now you know where i'll be coming ). As said in the previous post i'll try to position the heavy stuff in such a way that they cover this area of atack yet are themself NOT uncovered to all side (So no LOS in a 360 degree circle). Like said I TRY, because in practise this is still very hard to achieve. heavy stuff can be anything from tanks, mortars, FO arty, MG's. So summarised: I advance almost all my forces via a relative covered approach lane to the area of atack gammble that the opponent has not all his forces there (Once a opponent did exactly the same on the same area of attack....there went the theory.. but eh **** happens:), another time we both did the same but on different area's of attack....that was fun in a 30 turn game we were almost switched sides almost without any fire exchange and casualties in turn 22:) ). In these overwhelming attack my losses will be relative low and he will have one platoon orso killed/paniced/running for their lives. I still have 3 more or less ok platoons which I will order to take defence positions (the area of attack will result most of the time in controllng at least one flag). So now it's the opponoents initiative, he will probably advance with his remaining 2 platoons (or maybe even 1 , better for me ) towards my defenseiv positins.....from this point on the battle can go anywhere because just as some historical figure said once: A plan only survives untill enemy contact (or something like that). Well so much for my 2 cents on massing of forces in a balance ME. Summarised: make sure you attack him with more than units than he has on defence gammbling the other forces of him can't approach fast enough to help them out. gr Screeny
  11. Hey, Mhh recon; nice subject has been discussed a lot!! You are just afraid to be seen while moving your troops i guess that's your big question. And sorry to say there is no real answer to that. The great thing of this game is that it is not "binaire". It's not coded in rules like: when in scattered trees then not to be seen or wenn in scattered trees with more than so many units then to be seen. It all depends on many factors, also factors not under your control like distance from enenmy units etc. I guess it's all a matter of experience...after a while playing QB against AI and especially against human opponents you strat getting a feel for where you are pretty save and where not. Rule of thumb however: woods and tall pines are oke you can hide allmost any unit in any amount in there. Tough part are scattered trees this is where experience comes in ...houses are ok as well only there is a limited amount of space in those. Good practise is to make a test range in the QB generator. Just lay down soem patches with different tyupes of vegetation. Buy some infantery units from one side and soem sharpshoorters from th eother side.place the sharpshoters and start moving the units around but play it in HOT SEAT MODE!! So you can see both sides. Don't bother in killing or shooting just move around and try to get a feeling of how the hiding of units work. Good luck! gr Screeny
  12. heya, I haven't encountered this problem in a moderate or more tree scenario's most of the time once they (Russians) see me, this leading squad get waisted but at least I have a good idea on their positions because most of the time the open area's to be crossed are relative small. saw the covering force is nver really far a way. Since I playing the Boltong rules campaign I'm battling on the open steps of South Russia. And I mean OPEN no cover expect for a single scattered tree here and a ditch over there. Axis on the attack and the rusky on the other side. No matter how caution I am no way I managed to get any forces beyond 200 mtrs from my set up zone without being ellimnated. The covering forces don't see any thing as well while 100 mtrs in front of them teh recon unit is getting chopped up. Only a star in the distance notig: "sound contact" wwhich disappears the next round. Moving any kind of armour is is as deadly as well. Boem boem. killed by AT guns...but this nowhere to be seen by nobody. Only strategy to get my forces from the setup zone into favorable positions up front is to use all my precious arty for smoke screening. I tried that before and laid smoke on one side but then the forces were shot from the not-screened side. So next tactic I'll try is to lay a "path of smoke' through which my forces will advance. Will take quite some arty rounds and lot of co-ordination becausing crossing the area will take 2 to 3 minutes and all this time the screen must be there. How I will engage the guns and AT guns with out any arty once I'm ib new up front postions I still don't know....... If any one has some NEW idea's on open steppe tatctics.... gr Screeny
  13. Hey all, Here some points I noticed playing around with these rules. 90% I understand and they work fine, the remaining 10% I either really don't understand how to use it or I think how to use them but somehow this feeling I'm doing something wrong. well I decied now that I will not bother any one with question, afterall the rules are for any individual himself so I go along using the rules as I think they work best for me. I played my first battle and I lost totally (actually I did some probing the first 8 9 rounds and then figured out I was facing arouind 12 Russian tanks, and a couple of guns and infantery of which I knew they were there but no idea on the exact positions, me having no Panzer what so ever....so I just sad down and clicked go untill the end of teh game.) gaining experience takes quite long indeed but I guess that's realistic and the challenging part of the campaign (not like in the PG series where the first 5, 6 battles are challenging, there after the units are so experienced the remaining battles are a cakewalk). On Scrounged units: At the end of the battle I calculate the points and have the rule for myself I can do with them what ever I want: buy new units straight ahead or save them for later. Aux units: been reading and asking a lot about this issue, I geenrate a qb battle with the parameters that came up. the units on the battlefield I write down (well not complete mostly I just scan it fast writing down the companies, the armour and the artilley, afinally I check what individual units the AI picked.) Then in generating the real battle I pick my core force (incl any scrougned units still haven't got any tough) then I check the parameters sheet (nr 28/31) and I allow myself only to pick from the aux units pool I previous generated and within the given points stated in the parametersheet (28/31). Only on air support I pick as many points as possible as within the given points in the parametersheet (31). Then I roll the dice and use rule 56 for there experience. I noticed that air support is not that effective (first battle I had 2 Stuka's and strafing Me 109.....only 1 enemy tank had been knocked out in 37 rounds....). So I probabaly ain't playing completly by the rules but it works some what for me. I guess i'll be playing 1 or 2 more battles and then start over again and play it as serious as possible. For now I'm learning to fight on open steppe terrain which is hell (really wonder how the Germans did that in real life 60 years ago..) and learning to use the rules as they suit me best. So much for my experiences with this rules (even if I don't get them 100% and I chenged them a bit imho they are awesome!!) gr Screeny
  14. heya, terrain dictates indeed.....terrain is one of the many "assets" that dictates the tactics and movements. Keep your men always in command of the HQ. Not only for the bonus of the HQ, under HQ command they will panic less, respond quicker to new orders (=decreases delay). And for the main reason: Keeping squads together concentrates firepower. And besides all other fancy and nifty tactics you can read at this forum concentration of firepower is still imho one of the most important issues. On the matter of that keeping forces together makes a good arty/mortar target...well yes but then agan if terain dictates you should be hidden in woods/houses/tree area's etc and as long as you are hidden, the enemy can't see you and he can't target you. And trust me I never met an opponent who lays down "blind area fire", just to precious that arty gr Screeny
  15. Jaegermeister: I had teh same question posted before allready but still no answer.... REST: ANY BODY AN IDEA I WANT TO MOVE INTO BATTLE.!!!!!! (remember you are dealing with an addict here ) gr Screeny
  16. To be chauvenistic: I'mm glad my g/f doesn't like CM or any other PC game (beside mine sweeping and card games in your start bar) at least some thing we dont have to do together because "it's so lovely to do things together " (think of : shopping, doing dishes, watching tv her programmes ofcourse, visiting the mother in law etc) Nop CM is my last resort to have some quality time for/with my self. gr Screeny
  17. Aha it's a bug....I thought I had only bad luck all the time with Damp ground and hot temp/clear air....makes sense then gr Screeny
  18. Just make sure the ground conditions are not too wet/damp/moist. Some nice dry or frozen ground suits heavy tanks best gr Screeny
  19. Hey, Allways hard comment on such questions, as the replier never really knows what units you have and what the battlefield looks like. But here an "abstract" of all the post you probably read before : MASS OF FORCES!!! target at the enemy location 2 units of inf, 1 AFV and some art. while all the units keep a sight of the enemy position, let 1 of the 2 inf units move into the enemies, position. How this should be worked out in detail all depends on the situation at hand. But this is the whole basic idea. (Remember all the articles, books, discovery docu's etc you read/saw about the blitzkrieg doctrine??? massing, concentrating, firepower, co-ordination.....well use this abstract ideas in your battles ) gr Screeny
  20. He guys, Give this guy Quenaelina break, he is going through a face. On Oprah they call it denial or so. Once upon a time he started playing CMBO and kept loosing. So he practised and practised, untill one day.....he won, and he started winning more even against human players, with fast and daring rushes towards the flags....he was thinking tjeeeee!!! I'm good I'm Rommel re-incarnated...and now in CMBB he has too start all over again........................ gr Screeny
  21. MikeT: No sweat mate, my fault, in my understanding the "summy" mods were available allready. I'll wait. (But don't let us wait to long ) gr Screeny
