  1. I second that. I want more WWII coverage. And throw in Northern Africa, Northern Europe and maybe even Spain before '39. Mies
  2. Stories like this makes you think about what is still lying around in boxes stacked away in storage rooms and cellars everywhere... Mies
  3. The solution to this problem seems to be as simple and easy as can be. I removed my whole CMBB installation and re-installed the game from cd again. For some reason something in the original installation was wrong because after the installation we were able to finish the game (some 20 turn) without any problems. Mies
  4. Are there going to be any updates in future CMBB patches regarding tcp/ip? I don't know if this makes any sence, but would it be usefull to set the time-out time to a higher value so that tcp/ip packets have more time to reach the other side? Mies
  5. At the moment we are continuing the game as PBEM. We are going to try resuming a live game as both of us have some time and try to pick a time were everyone is a sleep to make sure of an as good as possible connection. Mies
  6. I have read Ryan's book about Berlin too and although I prefer his style of writing it becomes clear pretty fast that Beevor had access to a lot more resources. Most of the comments I heard are about the way Beevor hammers on the way Soviet soldiers treated German civilians and soldiers. This is indeed true, but once you get into the details it is as fantastic as horrific as one can get. His description of the battles south of Berling where the 9th and the 12th army's were retreating and the final battles of in Berlin leave little to the imagination. I have also read Beevors Stalingrad book and I actually liked it. A lot of details and good views on events that went on. Maybe it's a little more written from a German point of view, but that didn't really bother me. Mies
  7. I'm reeding this one too and as an added reason for payback Beevor mentions the Soviet propaganda machine (probably as effective as the Germans was), that over a 3 year period did nothing else than tell soldiers that a good German was a dead German. It also "inspired" the soldiers to treat the German population as the Germans did with the Russian. As said in another post this certainly is no way to talk things right. Mies
  8. Hi Again, As to the two cable connections, I am on a small private network with both computers hooked up to an old computer running a Linux router. That machine is connected to the Internet through a go between, between a telephone modem and a normal cable connection. The modem is hooked up to the cable but uses something like digital to analogue modulation to get data across. This would explain the high latency times as it’s max speed is the same a from a regular telephone connection. Regarding the reproduction of this problem, we do have a saved game, which we couldn’t get through because the connection was closed every time we tried to load the game. We have now continued that turn by e-mail. I don’t know if this will happen on two other machines with different connections though. Thanks a lot! Mies
  9. Thumbs up . I really like the CMMOS app. Makes life so much easier. Going to download all the stuff this afternoon.
  10. Hi, A friend I are in the middle of a 1000-point CMBB QB on a medium map. We are having tremendous trouble in keeping the connection alive. System specs: Host machine PIV 1.8 GHZ Windows 98 512 Megs RAM Nvidia Geforce card (64MB) ADSL internet connection Client machine1 AMD 1.2 GHZ Windows XP Pro 512 Megs RAM Nvidia Geforce2 MX/?? Graphic card (32MB) Cable modem (not broadband ..yet) Client machine2 Laptop PIII 1 GHZ Windows 2000 256 Megs RAM SIS integrated graphics card (16 MB on card 32 extended through bios) Cable modem (not broadband ..yet) We are both running CMBB with the 1.01 patch installed. What happens is this: - We both make our moves and hit go. - The data transfer starts. - Sometimes the red line completes and it says “completing Upload”. - Sometimes the data upload doesn’t complete. - A message appears saying “Lost data connection, resume from autosave game” or somefink. - CM needs to be closed and restarted on both machines, otherwise it freezes on the host machine with a ping and crashes on the client with an “unhandled exception error”. The question is, is this a know issue with the game? Could it be a tcp/ip problem? Could it be caused by Wanadoo as cable ISP (heard other people had problems with that too). Thanks a lot for the help. I really need to kick some German b*tt . Mies [ January 23, 2003, 05:16 AM: Message edited by: Mies ]
  11. It seems I have stirred up a hornet's nest, which was not my intention. Actually from the first time I read the "Forgotten Soldier" (must have been 15 years old) I always regarded it as being authentic. Only the last couple of years I have my doubts about the book being (semi-) fictional. I wanted to reply sooner giving this link. Someone else posted it as well and concluded from it that the Sajer's book must be real. In my opinion it puts at least a question mark behind it. On the other hand there are also articles out there that prove all the criticasters wrong, especially Lt-Col. Kennedy's view on the book with a first hand account from Guy Sajer self. Have a look here and search for "Sajer". I should have taken more care in putting my personal opinion down here without any prove. Let everyone read up on the subject if they want and make up their own mind. Mies
  12. Guy Sajer's book is well written and gets a lot of the "emotions of war" across, but it is fictional. If you're interested in good stuff on the Eastern Front check this thread. It has a lot of good books listed. I personally recommend Bierdermann's book. Great story illustrated with original photographs. Mies
  13. Ever considered publishing this in book form? Great stuff!! Mies
  14. If you really want to see the strange AI behavior sometimes check this bridge screenie . I took it after playin the "Message from Goetz" scenario. Is this strange or what? And I was wondering where Iwan was at the whole time  Edit: I cannot type Mies [ January 17, 2003, 02:15 PM: Message edited by: Mies ]
  15. As a good mate of mine (who didn't think that was gamey either) told me people can perceive this as being gamey. I can get into that but, on the other hand, if there is good cover to the sides it makes no sence to rush through the open middle of the map right? What I'm trying to say is, is that not everything is gamey and then again not all game engine possibilities should be exploited. Just agree with an opponent before starting a game..... or somefink Mies
  16. Except for the occasional XP crash  no problemo..... That could be due to the G-Force2 graphics too of course Mies
  17. **Possible Spoilers** * * * * * * * * * I haven't even deared playing it. It looks way to intimidating to me. Shot up buildings and a big open squire doesn't give me much convidence to start out with to be honest. Can't get it over my heart to send those poor Germans of to a certain death. Mies
  18. Come on MG, dont chuck TNT down our throats  ! We just want to know the ending to this battle  Mies
  19. That’s probably the %-tage of people from the former East Germany. But to be fair to the Germans, especially the once in the border regions make an effort to speak Dutch, just as a lot of Dutchies speak German. There is only animosity between The Netherlands and Germany when it comes down to Football. Then all of a sudden everyone knows where both countries are located. Mies
  20. I've been hitting the old F5 key whole weekend to see if something new was up. I could do with MG's part to break the day right now Mies
  21. I really want to know the conclusion to this horrific battle. I can guess but I's rather know! Mies
  22. De beste wensen, best wishes to all. That this year may bring as mutch CM as the last did ! Mies
  23. I've also seen the same thing and just thought my tankers had been spending too much time on vodka in stead of on target practise. It's is a shame to see that all of your carefull moving into position ends in trying to shoot the top of the hill you're on. Mies
