2.
quote:
Originally posted by newlife: [QB] I was merely trying to convey the frustration of having upgraded some mods, makes a number of other vehicles now look silly. [QB]

That's the problem. Once you start using mods, you're on a long hard road to hell. Soon, one mod isn't good enough, so you get a few more, then a few more, and so on. The bad thing is if you're too lazy to make backups on a disk or CD and you have to wipe your hard drive, like I had to, you feel like jumping off a moderatly high bridge. Although it isn't that bad if you have DSL or cable.
 3.
quote:

The best way to use sharpshooters is to position them in advance of your MLR with a good LOS over a likely enemy AOA.
quote:

That's a great use of acronyms. Hmm, I'll try to top it... "I'll make you KIA ASAP U SOB!" How does that sound? Bah, I sound like a 13 year old girl on ICQ!? But enough of that, the issue is sharpshooters and their uses. Before when I would use them, they always seemed to get spoted right away. Then I learned that it is best to let them engage their own targets, rather than giving them specific orders. Since I statred doing that, I've had relativly good success with them harrassing crews and such. I don't really have much experience with them as tank shockers, but I know I've been on the receiving end of that quite often.

I was refering to viewing the map before making purchases and such. Yes, tom_w is right about that. Sorry for any confusion.
 5. Hookie, 1. No, you can't see the terrain in a QB until the fightin' starts. 2. Do you mean small arms, or AT/infantry guns?
 6.
quote:
Originally posted by Vanir Ausf B: No, I don't think that's how it works. To the best of my knowledge, this is how it goes: Tank fires at enemy tank and at that point CM rolls the dice to see if it hits. If it does, the shell animation flies to the enemy tank and strikes it, ignoring anything and everything that may happen to be in the way. A hit is alway a hit. If the shot misses, then CM plots a semi-random path for the shell so that it will fly near (usually) to the targeted vehicle, but will not hit it. In this case it will not go through intervening terrain/buildings because it doesn't have to get to the enemy tank like it does on a hit. So anything it happens to hit is SOL. [ 10-19-2001: Message edited by: Vanir Ausf B ]

Yeah, I suppose that makes the most sense. Now that I think about it, it's not really all that odd. That's the way it should happen. Now the shell flying through the house, that's another story. Still, I can't help but feel sorry for the fellas in the house when the shell hit. They just made a successful counter thrust to retake the center of town, the next they know, they're blown to hell by their own armor support. Poor bastards.
 7. Boredom showed me the way to CM around May or June of 2000. It was late one night, nothing was on TV, and I was bored with my old games. I decided to browse the net, looking for anything of value, when I came upon a link to the Battlefront.com site. Out of curiosity, I clicked the link and read the summary (which is basically the same today) and thought the concept was very original. I was on an old 28.8k connection back then, so I started downloading the demo before I went to bed. It was finished by the time I woke up, so I installed it and began playing on my old P233 with 40MB RAM and stock 2MB video card. It ran like a bad anime, choppy frame rates, bland textures, I couldn't even tell when a tank fired it was so slow! I had to wait for the status bar to say "reloading". There was no smoke, fog, or tracers, rain and snow were awful, and overall, it looked horrible. Despite all this, I still loved the game and thought it was the best WWII game ever made. I ran out and got a money order (I was too poor to have a credit card back then) and followed the ordering instructions. All that was left to do was wait. It seems like such a long time ago, doesn't it? Oh well, here's to CM:BB, may it find it's way to our mail/postal boxes with no hindrances.
 8.
quote:
Originally posted by CMplayer: In a pbem my opponent had a 75mm equipped HT blow itself up at the beginning of the game, but he thought a hidden AT gun took it out. He spent the whole game trying to figure out where that shot came from....it crimped his movements so much that by sneaking around he came into sight of the real ordnance.

Heh heh, that's always amusing. My most memorable "blow myself up" bit occurred during a night battle. The auto purchase had picked a Hummel for me (ugh) along with an infantry company. I had the Hummel sit back a ways with a rifle squad and MG team as support a little ways in front of the Hummel. Out of nowhere, a Brit rifle platoon(?) shows up and a hellish fire-fight ensues. The Hummel, deciding he wants in on the action, turns a few degrees to the left and fires.. Keep in mind, the units were fairly close together when this happens. The results; 1 KO'ed Hummel, 1 dead MG team, 3 casualties to my backup squad, and a routed Brit squad. I began to rethink my group 'em close together at night doctrine from then on.
 9.
quote:
Originally posted by Herr Oberst: Tibor, the missed shot at the Sherman was obviously because he hit the building in front of him instead...

Yeah, I realize that. I just thought since targeted shots that hit go through houses, a missed shot would go through the house and either hit the ground in front of the target, or fly off the map.
 10. Hello everyone. I read a while ago about how sometimes a round fired from a tank will pass through a house and strike it's target on the other side. The reason for this, as I understand it, is that the target passes behind an object after the engine has already determined if the shot will be a hit. Well, here's a question for you. Does the same thing happen if the shot turns out to be a miss? What I mean is, does the shell still pass through the house even if it does not end up striking it's target? I ask this because I had a similar experience the other day when I had a Tiger targeting a moving Sherman on a ridge about 300 meters away. The Sherm passed behind a house about 50 meters away from me, then the Tiger fires, obliterating the house and one of my squads inside! Is this a common thing, or a freak occurrence? I suspected that the shell would just pass through the house as it does on a hit, but maybe I'm missing something. Either way, it was pretty awesome.
 11. Hello all. Just yesterday I was filled with glee over the release of the modified German vehicle mods compatible with CMMOS. I DL'd the filesets, and the mod packs, and attempted to install them. I had read that before unzipping, it was necessary to create a folder for the new rulesets (901 I believe). I did this, and attempted to unzip the new ruleset, but my system would lock when I clicked on the CMBO folder. I restarted my computer, and tried again. Same thing. I decided to give up and just play a CM QB with my GF (heh). Everything worked out fine for the first few turns, then on turn 7 while waiting for the turn to compile, the game locked up. This has never happened to me durring the 15 months I've had this game. I figured it was just a freak occourance and restarted the game (thank God for the autosave), and continued playing. It seemed OK. Then on turn 15, it happened again. I tried again, but this time it froze again. Much to my dismay, I could not get the game to work. The worst part is that I was actually beating her for once. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd greatly appreciate them.
 12.
quote:
Originally posted by Kingfish: Keep in mind that my questioning is based on the assumption that rocket batteries are not 'tweaked'(for lack of a better word) onto a TRP. I've always understood them to be area fire weapons, not something you can walk towards a target one round at a time. If someone has info to the contrary please let me know. Thanks

That sounds about right to me. Although I don't really use many rockets, or TRPs for that matter (I usually attack ), I've always understood that rockets are, by design, rather inacurate.
 13. I'm stunned  by this incredible looking mod. Excellent work everyone. I even like the uniform mods, that's odd because I don't really get into those. Again, very nice.
 14. Mike8g, cripes that's a long shot! My zook teams can't even hit a target 20 meters away most of the time. Out of curiosity, what kind of SP gun was it?
 15.
quote:
Originally posted by Stixx: A word of warning. When the Game arrives the CD will be inside the manual which is sealed in plastic. It's not in a normal hard cover case. Alot of people including me almost died when we tore open the pacaging to find that they had forget the CD!!!. Of course they hadn't, it is "Inside" the maunal. Just thought i would warn you.

Aww, you just spoiled half the fun! I think everyone should have to go through that little piece of hell, it's all part of the experience. Carrots, welcome to an eclectic bunch of social misfits. Once the game arrives, you too will join our swelling ranks. MWUUHAAHA!
 16. I just downloaded the much talked about CMMOS the other day, and I must say, it is a very good thing indeed. However, I am wondering why no German vehicle mods are supported. Is this something that will change in the future, or are we stuck with what we have? Either way, it's still a helluva thing to have.
 17. Meh, the game's alright... Nah, I'm just joshing ya, the game's great. Let's put it this way, I've had this game for almost a year and a half, and I still play it almost every day. You don't have to worry about getting ripped off or anything either.. Hey, wait a minute, you're the Dark Knight for cripes sake! What's Batman doing asking his dad for a computer game? Heh.
 18.
quote:
Originally posted by KwazyDog: Looking cool Rommel. Out of interest, did you base it on a blueprint, or did you make it freehand. In case its of interest, here is a site with some blueprints, althought they vary in quality... http://www.suurland.com/blueprints-frame.htm Hehe, to keep CM framerate at a reasonably level we are having to make our models with about 0.05% of the polygons youve used there...one day that will change I guess, as computers become more powerful Dan [ 09-20-2001: Message edited by: KwazyDog ]

Awesome! Man, what a great site! I'm bookmarking this page now, just in case I get 3D Studio back. Thanks a bunch!
 19.
quote:
Originally posted by Rommel22: You can animate anything, but you can not add sound, as far as I know. Thats done in premier or something. I am sure there is a pulgin or something to add sound stright from lightwave. I am not sure I really understand your question about modeling, but I'll try to explain. It depend how you want to model, I started with a box with many segments cutting the box. This way I can bend and twist and so on. giving me the main hull. I did the turret the same way. I also use cutting tools, what I mean I sue another object to cut the one I am working on. Actually the renderign is done in a different program. Basicly it's called Lightwave but there are 2 programs. "Modeler", that is the program where you build the models. "Layout", where you do the animation and rendering of the object. I hope that clears it up a bit. No I have not done human model, but I will, infact I did a manaquin, which is sort of a human, but no facial features or anything. Basicly I just did the manaquin to see if I can at least pull of a body shape and I did. The tank is pretty high in polygons, it's a bout 160 thousand polygons. And it will get higher as I have more details to add.

OK, now I understand. It appears to be strictly geometric object modeling. From what you said, the model of that tank would have been quite an arduous task indeed. Sorry about the confusion generated by my questions. Let me explain, or at least try. Spline modeling (I think that's what it's called) is done in MAX by creating a series of lines and shapes (all 2D) and arranging them in a particular pattern. From what I remember, you need one line to be the path, and a number of various sized closed splines (such as a rectangle or circle) spread along the path. The path controlled the direction of the model, while the other shapes along the path made up the outside skin. It made modeling things like mugs, forks, goblets and such a cinch to model. It's hard to explain the whole process in such a small format, but I tried.
 20.
quote:
Originally posted by Rommel22: Dan, Lightwave is a program specifcly for building and animating 3d models. It's really easy to use, but there is alot to use and a lot to learn. The standard view is a 4 quadrant view, you have an x,y and z axis ofcourse. You can also set up the views how ever you want. You can rotate them, move them zoom in or out and so on. Lightwave is expensive about 500 bucks I think or more. But I got it for free from a friend. As long as I am using it as a "learning" program at the moment and not using it comercial, it's legal. Hope that helps. p.s I am using Lightwave 6.5, version 7.0 is suppose to be out soon.

I'm curious as to how Lightwave works. Is the standard method of modeling object, spline, or a combination of the two? I would assume the latter, as that rendering looks pretty tight. Also, can you animate backgrounds, and add a soundtrack? Probably not, but if you can, I'm gonna head out and get a copy of this here Lightwave deely. One more question, if I may. Have you ever tried to model the human figure, or anything else with a high poly count?
 21. Looking good, Rommel. I bet those tracks were a B*#ch to model. God I miss my 3D Studio Max.
 22. Hey Madmatt, out of curiosity, when were the shots taken? Man, I love that barrage pic!
