I wonder if this is some manifestaton of some inner hatred toward me. And yes she is a quick learner. First battle I creamed but good. now....? I don't know, I still remain optimistic however. I still have my Stug and a bunch of 81mm mortar from my FO. It should prove to be a climactic ending.

  4. Hello. The other day a made a post concerning how my girlfriend has become hooked on CM and the results of our first clash (to recap, I won with a score of something like 83 to 17 or something). She didn't do too bad for her first time at bat though. I also mentioned how a rematch was scheduled for yesterday and a few of you seemed interested in hearing the results. Well, we only got to turn 13 (she takes upwards of 1 hour to plot her moves) so this is just an update. The game is a 1000 pt. ME with a 25% bonus for her. I'm the Germans, she's the Americans(even though I suggested she play as the Germans, but I think she doesn't want to be associated with nazis :rolleyes Feeling guilty about having a Tiger in the last battle, I chose a reg Stug and a marder, with a vet PZgrenadier co. and a 81mm spotter. The map is is short in length but long in width with the VLs (3) located on a straight road about 200 meters apart. The terrain is sorta hilly with patches of tall pines and scattered trees on my side and a few scattered trees and grain fields on her side. Already I feel that I have a slight advantage over her in terrain. Oh how wrong I was . So here goes. Turns 1-2: not much to tell. I order my company up to the start of the tall pines. I have the stug and Marder lag behind a little Turn 3-4: just before my leftmost platoon can get in cover of the trees, a deadly acurate barrage of arty hits accompanied by MG fire from a high ridge overlooking my whole front. Don't know how I missed that. The result is one routed HMG team and a bunch of shaken infantry. Turn 5: by this time, most of my left platoon is in or around a 2 story heavy building overlooking the left and center VL. They spot some infantry on the high ridge and open fire. At the same time, my center platoon is headed through the pines toward the center VL when they come to a road that has direct LOS with the dreaded high ridge. As soon as I step foot on the road, more arty fire begins to drop on me . Much to my astonishment, I have suffered very few casualties thus far. Turn 6: 2 squads of Left platoon continues to pour suppression fire on the ridge while the third bravely pushes forward to the left most VL about 20 yards away, located in a patch of scattered trees. All of a sudden, a HE shell blasts the 2 story house. Then another, and another. They are comming from 2 sherman 105s (?) on a ridge on the right flank. I send my marder into action to try and flank the sherms with the help of the uncommited right platoon. The center platoon, with the help of the Stug, begin to pummel a group of infantry in a patch of trees directly in front of their positions. All seems well until the house goes up in flames at the end of the turn. Turns 7-9: With the house ablaze, the left platoon rushes out of the house toward the left VL only to be greated by HE and MG fire from the sherms on the hill as well as an enemy inf platoon in a set of trees 100 meters from the VL. My spotter finally gets a good LOS and begins dropping smoke on the sherms halfway into turn 8. The center platoon with the Stug has great success with the infantry in front of them and sends them retreating behind a small hill . Right platoon gains good ground in support of the Marder on the right flank which is in a small valley and thus out of enemy LOS. Or so I think. Turn 10-13: With the center and right VLs taken and secured, and the left still in question, I think I have it made. Then out of nowhere on turn 10, small arms fire from a treeline about 120 meters away knocks out my marder , and begins to assualt my right platoon. The left platoon is now taking heavy losses from tank, arty, and all sorts of small arms fire and is forced to withdraw into the treeline behind the buring house. I call in arty support on turn 11 to help right platoon hold the right flank as I expect a strong push from that side. It finally starts to drop at the begining of turn 13. I also decide to pull some troops from center platoon to help the battered left platoon. Well, that's the story so far. Sorry for the long winded post, but I think it's all kinda funny. We're supposed to finish tonight so I'll keep you posted.
  5. WOW! This must be what is known as "smart shrapnel" Arty. Seriously though, that's funny but it had to suck at the time.
  6. I would think it wasn't done all that much in real life unless the crew was made up of hero-types. I suppose it could happen, and may have actually taken place, but if I was one of the survivors I'd be charging for the rear. As for it being gamey, I wouldn't use this tactic against a human player. But against the AI, sure go on ahead.

  8. I just downloaded the set last night around 11 pm or so. Will I still have to update?
  9. OK, I don't intend to start a war of the sexes or anything here, but I do have one question for you guys. How many times have you had to sit through some 2 1/2 hour chick flick, or spend an afternoon shopping for a new spring wardrobe? I quess the point I'm trying to make is relationships are all about sacrafice. Thus I spend a Sunday afternoon watching Sence and Sensibility, and she spends the evening watching the Simpsons and Futurama. It's a tradeoff. I say if your wives/girlfriends and in some cases husbands and boyfriends can't sacrafice 2-3 hours on a measly little QB then this is clearly a one sided relationship. But I digress. Maybe I'll Introduce her to the forum so she may pick up some outside advice. I never thought of that, sounds like a good idea. As an added note, this post is in noway a shot at the female gender. (Note I included husband/boyfriend) So for the ladies out there, I will ad spending a Saturday watching the Jean-Claude Van Damme marathon on TNT or something as a fair trade for a game of CM. 10. As I'm new here and don't know how to quote, Gunnergoz said "A true gentleman would have let the lady have the uberpanzers and taken the ronsons for himself...she might have kicked your ass then and really thrilled herself! Then again, you might not ever get her off your PC afterwards..." I wanted to let her play as the germans but she wanted to play as the British. And yes in retrospect it was kinda gamey using tigers but oh well. And as for terrorizing infants and todlers' well that has no place in this forum, and I am undergoing therapy for this. And yeah, the game engine and realism are up there on the list, but a game I can enjoy with my better half...
  11. The second match is set for tomarrow. We finished purchasing and setting up our units. Last time she played as the Brits, this time I think she took the Americans. Not that matters too much, but I think U.S. infantry is a little better though. It's a ME battle and she has 25% extra points in an 1000 point battle. I took a vet PZ grenadier company, a Stug, and a marder i think, can't remember now. The VLs are all located along a road in the center of the map with a few houses scattered along the length of the road. The terrain gives me a slight advantage as there is excellent cover from patches of trees all the way to the VLs. Her side of the map is quite open. Still I can't help but feel anxious about the upcomming game. I think she's learned alot in one game, and she is sure to have purchased some armor this time (last game she just had AT guns). All this combined with the fact that I stink in Tank vs. Tank engagements leads me bo believe this will be a much tougher fight. Oh well, I'll keep you all posted on the outcome of this clash of the almost married couple.
  12. Hello all. I've been playing CM for a little over a year now and up until recently I coludn't decide what I like most about the game. For a while I thought it must be map and battle editor, but that was back when I was running CM on a P233 with a 2 meg video card. Needless to say the frame rate was horrid and the textures, if you could call them that, were just plain bad. Then I got a new system with a 16 meg card and I was instantly taken aback by the beauty that is CM. So for a while I had decided it must be how realistic the game could look. however, I have yet again changed my outlook on this subject. IMO if a game can take a person who has no intrest in war and or wargames, and turn them into an addict, that's amazing. Case in point, my girlfriend. After a year of putting up with my rants about CM, she decided to play me in a hotseat game. Now keep in mind she knows nothing about the units or the tactics of the game, so I had to help her out a bit with the setup and showed her how I would tackle the situation. I won't go into the details of the game, but in the end I had a total victory. She did put up quite a fight though (Knocked out one of my Tigers and cut up 2 of my PZgrenadier platoons). Now she's a CM junkie and is already preparing for our next match. That, I think, is why CM is such a good game.
