  1. Ok, so here I sit and haven't received a PBEM turn in over... what 4 hours? Where IS EVERYONE? I have some 8 PBEM games going with people from all over the place (Hey if the guys in Findland aren't up, the guys in Australia ought to be!) I have in-laws visiting which means someone to hold the babies, so I can answer the important ...er... work e-mails. So I realised that I'm a CM addict and here are the signs.... - That and turning up the volume on my PC very high so I can hear the turns coming in from parts of the house. - When I'm upstairs cooking, I have a telnet session open so I can quickly check for a new turn. I frequently know about it before i get it on my desktop. - When I first get to work, I now go to the forum BEFORE I check out dilbert. - I get ticked off when I can't accurately track all the forum threads from the 3 different PC's that I have to work on. - Last, and gawd, most disgustingly... I'm starting to read the Peng threads. So tell me, all you CM-junkies, how does your addition manifest itself? Damn! still no turns. *sigh*
  2. With tanks & carriers going right over the trees, was there any chance of them becoming high-centred? I haven't seen very many photos, however, I would expect that the trees were fairly small if it wasn't a source of concern? -r
  3. Here we go, let's see if I can get some of this in-line formatting working for me... Arch-Nmies v. (A2) Marko. I've re-sent my last run and have had no reply over the last week. Mechy-Bushy v. (B2) Rich. I've sent the setup and he's replied that he will get it back soon. April's Fools v. (C2) Kuma Setup sent. Dies Irae v. Paul. Move 33.. so that's probably turn 10 or so. Things are going well, however we are undergoing a legal squabble about who is responsible for cleaning up the mess once all is said and done. I figure that since he is the current tenant, it ought to come out of his damage deposit. I mean, if I'm forced to make him vacate the premises... I should be reimbursed for incurred expenses, ya? Paul, you going to pay for my arty?
  4. Sounds good, and thanks for your reply. -R
  5. I really like the looks of this and excellent work on hammering out the details. A small thing to consider... I have many different opponents (via Ladders) but I have one fellow in town that I have been playing PBEM's solid against for the last year. We try out different tactics and theories on each other. What would have to be modified in order to play a campaign of this sort against another player? The idea of 'favour' is cool but I wonder how setting up the balance of the proportion of QB points would be unsettled by having a human opponent. I've looked at other larger campaign rulesets, however they seem to require 3rd party arbitration. btw, I'm not asking anyone to throw lots of work into this idea... but just wondering if you had any suggestions of what might need tweaking to balance it out. Again, great work! -R
  6. Status for replacement player Axis X2 (reade@ryddle.com) fyi, I've started 2 games. Dies Irae (Allied D2) Turn 4 Arch Enemy (Allied A2) Turn 2 I haven't been able to start the other games yet... Cheers, -R
  7. Hi Guys, glad to be of service as I try to make you die for King & Country. (tiny gauntlet thrown. ) I've sent a note to my opponents and will start the games shortly. Cheers, -R
  8. Well, there's no way that a preview will be in my area... so perhaps I can beg a trip out to the head office (Pleasanton) if a preview is going ahead. Will follow this thread closely... -R [ July 23, 2002, 01:44 PM: Message edited by: ryddle ]
  9. Heya, Little did I know that the guy who lives in my basement went to a reunion of some sort for the South Saskatchewan Reg this last weekend. He went primarily so he could talk with some Dieppe vets. From that meeting he has a name of another fellow who he will interview/visit ( sometime in the next couple of days ). Since I'm worse than "grog-lite", I thought I would open a thread to compile a list of questions that real grogs might have. I figure that I'll pass my tenant the list and if the conversation goes well, that he will try to get some questions answered. Depending on the timing, I might also tag along. No guarantees that any of this will work out, but it's always good to go prepared, etc... -R
  10. Gaaaa! all-caps alert! My eyes! My eyes!
  11. I guess it's a sign of my faith in the MOD'ers around, that I was just presuming that someone would immediately create a replacement for the screen shots with the backwards "R"'s. So far as how it comes across to the target demographic... well, I'm sure BTS did some sort of marketing survey. (Though I would vote "ick!"), but as long as I get the game... it's not all that important to me. -r
  12. Caesar, I believe you hit the nail on the head with your 'flee screaming...'. There is a much greater chance that a unit will poop in its collective pants on a withdrawl and you end up with a PANIC or something. I'll use it when I see a spotting round come in on my supposedly hidden reserve platoon... get the heck out before the rest of the arty arrives. fwiw, -r
  13. That would be great. Quite a laugh if it included fires. Imagine the innocent fire you set which (over the course of subsequent QB's) could cover a good part of the map. -R
  14. I would like to use greenies more (with supression, etc), however I always feel under the gun with the time alotment for each game. If I only have 30 turns in a 1500point QB, I'm conscious of every turn that it takes me to scout, get into position, supress, rally troops, etc. Is it just me or does anyone else find the time constraints tough when using green troops? If not, how do you do it? -R
  15. The idea of revisiting the western theater with the new engine sounds cool. For those who have wondered "What would have happened had the Russians and the Americans (et al.) had gone toe to toe?" Now, for this non-grog, that would be interesting. -R
  16. Hey, can you host one of your games on webEx so everyone who wants to can log in and watch the game play? I'll play hookey from work to sit in on an tcp/ip game yea, yea... in my dreams -R
  17. I didn't know mods could be like this. I've really only gone for grass type stuff before. Must get me some of those. Good work. -R
  18. Nahhh, Sparky Rat. you pegged me right. I'm so anal I have a pucker factor of "10". I'd like to think that I have more of a sense of humour than that, however the humerous part of the thread seemed to run away whilst I was writing my own. I could also blame it on new-daddy brain, however, that's more likely to make me incoherent and offensive than just plain ol' boring. Call 'em like you see 'em. -R
  19. There is an interesting discussion on "who's your daddy" on a thread in alt.english.usage. You can go to groups.google.com and search for origin "who's your daddy" Or just go to the advanced screen and plunk in the parameters. My guess is that the kid forgot the comma seperating "daddy" and "punk". fwiw, -r
  20. Sorry, all I can think of is Guy Lombardo. I'd agree that there wasn't a homogeneous "Canadian Culture" during WW2. Much of what was present was from the 'old-country' (and that would vary depending on the region), or what was pop-culture at the time (therefore British, American, or our adaptaions of the pop style). Sorry I couldn't help, but it is an interesting thread though. -R
  21. Another advantage of using multiple way-points is that you won't have the command delay that you would have if you issued orders each turn. As well, if your troops were out of HQ command range or have changed status (Cautious, or whatever), the delay can be quite lengthly. Another thing you can do with multiple way-points is, in a subsequent turn, select the existing way-point and move it a bit. This allows you to fine tune a portion of the path without having to issue new orders (and suffer the subsequent delay.) Any of these waypoints can be selected and the orders changed. i.e. turn a sneak to a run fwiw, -R
  22. Thank-you very much, that fixed my problems. I had tried using several different mp3 search engines (Bear-Share, Kazza?) and one of those turkeys loaded up some stuff on my system. Once I ran 'adaware' and purged my system, all works well. Now I can get back to being killed again! Thanks Reade (aka ryddle)
  23. I forgot to mention that I also patched up to 1.12 each time. TIA, -Reade
  24. Hi Gents, perhaps one of you can help me. I'm having a problem where the CM engine "skips and studders" during the movie phase (jumping from 0 seconds to 60) I have given an explanation at the end as to the behavour that I'm seeing, but my real question is how to completely purge my system so that I can play CMBO again. I have not added any new software or driver updates for months and months... All I have been using my PC at home for has been e-mail and CMBO and everything was working fine up until a week or so ago. I can't imagine that anything has happened on my system to make CMBO dependencies somehow invalid. (I'm running another virus check now...) Besides the following, what can I do? I've tried de-installing the app, then deleting all the directories and re-installing. When that didn't work, I've de-installed, deleted, and ran through the registry looking for things to delete. No luck there. Any suggestions? Thanks, Reade (aka ryddle) btw, the behaviour is as follows: 1) CM loads and I can log into a PBEM file (or start a QB) just fine. 2) During the movie phase, two things have happened a) The lower two buttons on the lower right for issuing commands to the movies are not present, in stead (where there would normally be the 60 second counter), I get a single digit with a hyphen and 4 extra digits. e.g. 4-1325. When I press play, the units keep on moving as though we were watching the full play out of the movie until all the units have moved off the map. After several rebuilds where everything has been deleted and the registry purged of any CM reference that I could find, I get similar behavour wrt the playing of movies. If I start a movie, it will play, but if I touch any of the movie controls, it snaps to 60 seconds and doesn't let work through the movie.
