1. So far I've run afoul of the dreaded SEE (Spousal Evil Eye). "don't you dare hook my husband on this game, I don't see enough of him as it is". So you see it's a touchy thing but when I get my chance I will walk them through a few turns, stealth and secrecy is called for here. Hopefully I wont need a combat bonus. I like the idea of sending a screenshot or two, got plenty of AFVs blowing up to choose from, mostly mine though.
2. I've been trying to hook my friends on this game but so far it's a no go. All I hear is "I don't get it" or "Am I missing something". All I can do is stare dumbfounded at them because to me it's obvious why this is one of the best wargames on the market. I need some help to convince the unenlightened that they are truly missing out on this great game. Suggestions?
3. How about a truly interactive mode? Lets say a 12 volt battery strapped to the bottom of your seat linked through the game so when your unit buys it you get to "feel" its pain. It would make for some interesting cringe moments with your sphincter closing up as that AT gun locks onto your AFV. Of course it would have multiple jolt levels just to seperate the men from the boys, so to speak. ps I like to see these posts with full FOG enabled (Fog of Grammar). Adds to the realism IMO.
4. I also noticed the bug in an ongoing operation and decided to do the semi-honorable thing and not target the area until an enemy unit appeared and I had LOS to it. After that all gloves are off. The rationalization I used is that in the silence of the night you can hear the enemy digging those holes so you you have a general idea of where the enemy is hiding. Once he is spotted you know that he is present in force and therefore it becomes a legitimate target area. The best I could come up with under the circumstances.
5. Monty Advances which is also found at the Scenario Depot. It has at least one Churchill and a several other tanks to play with on fairly open terrain.
6. I recently won a scenario in which I would only accept my opponent's surrender if he put in a review of it at the Depot. He gladly agreed to end his agony. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to make that demand again.
7. I had no trouble viewing it. When I linked to the site there was a prompt to download a plug-in. After that I could move up/down and do a 360 but no zoom.
8. Sgt Cheung in his Hellcat Took out something like 15 AFVs including Tigers, Jagdpanzer, a Nashorn and numerous HTs and infantry held up an entire column single handed until my reinforcements could shoot it up from the flank. Had to retire from the battlefield when he ran out of ammo.
9. 41...But I see life through the eyes of my 5 year old and it looks pretty good to me.
10.
quote:

I had infantry in town protecting my tanks but they were only good for buttoning the KTs. Enemy infantry? I was playing against the AI and as we all know unsupported tanks rumbling down main street is a common AI tactic. Open top AFV in town? Deperate situations call for drastic actions. Having just lost 2 Sherman-76s I only had 3 Sherman-75s against 2 KTs, not good odds at all that is why I moved my big gun into town under infantry cover. The best I could do under the circumstances.
11. Well here's the results from the KT-Sherman showdown and as usual the best laid plans don't always come out like you expect them to. Warning! the following contains a spoiler for the scenario Far from over Paderborn. I couldn't use the ambush marker because I didn't have LOS any where near the Tiger and no big guns immediately available (two burning Sherman-76s) so to increase my chances of getting a rear shot I did the following: I had another Sherman-75 hiding between buildings to the side so I fast-moved then moved it across in front to act as Tiger bait and keep him facing forward. I gave the Sherman in the rear a pause then fast move then reverse order and hit Go. To my horror the Tiger immediately spun around to turn to the rear and I watched in what seemed like slow motion my Sherman and the Tiger's turret moving to the same spot. The rear Sherman pinged two shots off the side and just as the Tiger locked on target and I was about to kiss my Sherman goodby I hear that distinctive dull clank and see a side turret penetration of the Tiger. The bait bit the cat! But it wasn't over yet. 1 turn later I tried a similar move on another KT in the same village. This time when racing down a street to set up behind the cat it suddenly appeared from between two buldings and the Sherman literally broadsided the thing. From 5m away it pinged a shot off the side, threw some smoke and put it in reverse. Just as the KT was swinging around my big gun came to the rescue, a Jackson rounded the corner and took it out with a side shot. Whew! Lady luck is on my side today. In a 6 turn stretch I have KOed 3 KTs and lost 2 Sherman-76s not a bad exchange. But I see lots more on the horizon. I wonder how many? Maybe I'll just run cicles around them for the next ten turns sticking my tongue out yelling nyah nyah can't catch me, yeah thats what I'll do...
12. Forgot to mention that the range is about 100m and its a buttoned KT. Didn't think of the ambush point. When you are on the move does your turret rotate faster towards the target if there is an ambush point nearby?
13. Here's the situation. A Tiger is situated on a town/village street with buildings on both sides. A Sherman-75 has moved to a side street and is about to cross behind the Tiger (crossing the T). I see several options given the dubious ability of a Sherman killing a Tiger even from behind. option 1. Fast move across the street and hope for a lucky shot. Not a good one since only one shot could be taken therefore a low chance at a kill but the Sherman will most likely survive to get another chance. option 2. Move across the street with a chance of getting more than one shot. Better option as it increases the chance of a kill but also increases the chance that the Tiger will swing its turret around and get its own shot off. option 3. Hunt across the street. Best chance to get as many shots as possible but a good chance that the Tiger will get a return shot and therefore a dead Sherman. option 4. Fast Move to just past the middle of the street and then reverse back to the original position behind cover. Good chance of getting more than one shot and also surviving by staying just behind the Tiger's slowly revolving turret. Opinions and suggestions?
14. I use this method all the time when playing with a company of American infantry.I use the company CO as my spotter and use a bunch of halftracks to ferry the whole group around. The added bonus is using the halftracks as a local defense against an infantry rush. It works wonders for suppression and taking out AT guns.
15. As I understand it if the HQ unit sustains casualties the last man standing is the officer and therefore can still maintain command of his platoon. Is this realistic? Would it be possible to have a feature in CMBB that if a HQ unit takes a casualty there is a random chance that it is the officer that goes down and not one of the grunts? The net result would be a HQ unit that is incapable of exerting command over the platoon and is considered from this point on just a half squad with its firepower depending upon the remaining weapons. This would force the company HQ unit to step up and exert its command over the now leaderless platoon.
16. Does the chance of immobilization due to bogging increase if you run more than one vehicle across the same patch of terrain? The reason I am asking is that I always assumed that if you ran multiple vehicles thru the same spot the following vehicles would get bogged and immobilized with greater frequency compared to the lead vehicle. I observed this on several occasions (maybe bad luck?) so I always avoid sending my tanks over the same patch of terrain which sometimes can ruin my plans to move my forces into proper position. I conducted a crude test to see if this was true by moving a M4 Sherman for ~800m on level wet open ground followed by another M4 Sherman thru the same path a short time later. The results showed that there doesn't seem to be any greater chance of immobilization for the following vehicles. This is a crude test and was done only 3 times with 20 tanks each only recording immobilizations. Does anybody have any other info to contradict this? p.s. I did do a search on this topic and after scanning many threads I didn't find a specific answer to this question.
17. Can't say that I have had much success at close assaulting a tank but it has been done to me numerous times. The best one resulted in the most spectacular explosion of one of my tanks that I ever saw. My american infantry with a Sherman in overwatch position were assaulting some woods with enemy identified as infantry? I routed what appeared to be a platoon of infantry and then moved thru the woods to mop up. After my infantry advanced some distance thru the woods chasing the routed enemy I advanced my Sherman to move around the woods into a support position. All of a sudden KABOOM up went my tank in a fierce explosion. Turns out it wasn't infantry I was chasing it was a pioneer platoon and a hidden flamethrower had roasted my tank. The crew bailed out and high tailed it right into the woods and ran up and killed the flamthrower team. I watched that turn a dozen times I swear there was a murderous grin on the TC's face as he emptied his .45 into the backs of the fleeing germans. p.s. this is origin of my screen name, I am an expert at finding ways to brew my own tanks up
18. My "best" came after playing this scenario four or five times against the AI and I managed to lose only about six or seven vehicles. This is the way I did it. SPOILER * * * * * * * * * * * I pretty much wrote off the halftracks and infantry that were in the forward position. I was never able to salvage much from that group. The key when playing the AI is let the first Tiger come to you. If you dance around enough "bait", i.e. Stuarts and halftracks zooming between buildings, the Tiger comes down into the town toward the flag (this is after he finishes munching on your forward position units so get the infantry into cover ASAP and don't let them engage the tank!). While you are luring the Tiger into town swing your Cromwells around behind him using the buildings for cover. I did this without losing any (in town) vehicles and took him out with a rear shot from one of three Cromwells that I got behind him. When the other four Tigers show up use similar tactics only this time you have Fireflys to flank around them and use smoke rounds to induce them to creep closer into town. Remember to scurry like rats in the alleyways and never take more than one turn shooting at the beasts from the same position. Take your time dealing with the incoming infantry with stand-off tactics, utilize that 95mm and then rush the upper flag at the end. These tactics of course probably wouldn't work against a human player. my two cents for what it's worth.
19. You will never regret allowing your son to buy the game. He will be so absorbed in playing that he will not have time to occupy himself with other shall we say more hazardous pursuits. My parents would have loved to have bought me this game at his age. It would have saved them a lot of sleepless nights. You will come to love the sound coming from his room of countless explosions, the unique clank of armor being KOed, the American Robin twittering in the background and of course the continual "Where did that @#$% Panther come from?" Another satisfied customer that's (slightly)over the average age.
20. Just curious about that speed test. Do they reach top speed any sooner when they have an incentive such as a Tiger on their tail?
21. I never thought of this as brilliance but it was nice to know that someone else used the same tactic and got the same result. I am referring to YankeeDog's experience with the St. Chappelle scenario which I played many moons ago and I swear I was reading a play by play of my game. The lesson I learned is that brilliance isn't some fancy move sometimes it is just knowing how the enemy thinks, in this case the AI, and anticipate their moves. I knew the AI would send an unescorted AFV down a narrow road bounded by trees because that was toward the objective flag. I just waited for them to blunder into an ambush.
22. When a target is ID as say Tiger? I find it helpful to also take into consideration the context in which the ID was made. For example: I was just recently playing a scenario that had my Stuarts ID Tigers? all over the place but I noticed that the position and movement of the Tiger was not quite what it should be doing in those circumstances. It was scurrying around in scattered trees moving between hiding spots instead of moving down the nearby roads and clearing my pesky little Stuarts out of the way, which had been hammering away at approaching halftracks. Because of this I had my Stuarts stick around and wait behind some buildings for a good shot and sure enough they began to knockout a couple of those Tigers? from side and front shots. They ended up taking out what turned out to be 4 PzIVs and and a couple of StuGs. Lesson learned is don't always believe what the ID says but always leave yourself plenty of room to bug out of there just in case. ps. In my case the graphical depiction looked just like a Tiger but after they were knocked out they looked like a PzIV or StuG but not yet positively identified.
23. I must be playing the same scenario because I am seeing the same thing. 5 PzIVs two of them from frontal shots, 4 ACs, 3 StuH42s with side shots and half a dozen halftracks and I lost only 1 Stuart with another one Gun Damaged. They were lost because I became too cocky from their success and exposed them for better shots. I should have kept them behind the buildings and waited for the keyhole shots I originally set them up for. Oh well another lesson learned.
24. Just curious about the amount of time people put into CM. I have been playing CM for quite some time but haven't logged in enough hours, IMO not the significant other's, and I need more battle experience to improve my game. I would like to compare my time devoted to CM to what other players put into it that way I can gauge how much of my other life I have to sacrifice in order to improve. Unfortunately eating and sleeping are presently the only time that is under my control. Your time devoted to CM could be broken down into the following: 1. battles (with opponents not significant others) 2. perusing the forum (for opponents, fact finding missions, research on tactics etc..) 3. scenario or mod designs 4. any other related activities that you can think of. make a rough estimate of the number of hours/week that is put into each one, this is a normal week devoted to CM not averaged out over a long time that would include vacations and down time. It would be helpful to me to know where I stand. I also understand the responses will be skewed toward those that devote more time to the game than the average player but it gives me somthing to shoot for. My time: 1. 10-20hrs 2. 5-6hrs 3. 0hrs 4. 0hrs it's pitifully low
25. I came in late to this discussion so therefore I hope this reply is close to the original question. I have a 300Mhz PII 32MB RAM (I think?)2GB hard drive and I consider myself computer illiterate, I basically know how to turn the damn thing on and that's about it. It runs CM OK but gets a little jerky on the big scenarios. I run the game on the lower settings and turn off just about everything to make it smoother , it looks like hell but I don't care I still love the game. Am I an average BTS customer? I would welcome any excuse to get a newer system and since I play no other games except CM my future computer purchase lies in the hands of BTS. So I would welcome any advancement of the CM graphics that gets me closer to a new machine. p.s. typical computer purchase discussion goes like this: wife: Why do you need to buy a new computer? me: Because this one's old and not so great to look at. wife: So just because something gets old and isn't as pretty as it used to be you want to throw it away and get a younger prettier model. I slowly back away from that land mine and make sure I still have all my fingers and toes.
