Gustav Line Beta AAR Round Two PEANUT GALLERY

Yes, all this landscaping is great... BUT - will Bil enter into GaJ's kill zone, or not? He's almost there. His spidey-sense is tingling... -
Tough to understand what you're posting. The top picture shows the Churchill passing THROUGH the bocage due to AI pathfinding? Then, you gave it some slow orders away from the anti-tank obstacles?

The Road Ahead - Operation Bagration

CM:A does a great job of highlighting the need for squads to be large enough to take casualties. A fun gem, with a VERY different flavor than CMSF. -

Do I get to play?

Nafziger is excellent. I purchased a bunch of his soft-cover volumes. Very much worthwhile. Zetterlin springs to mind. Ian Daglish's "Over the Battlefield" trilogy is a must-have if you have any interest in the Commonwealth tactical battle to break the Caen stalemate. More, anon. Ken

I understand what you're saying. However, if I have a great "sense" for hiding spots, should I be prevented from area firing on a stand of trees? Of course not. Now, how about if I send a gamey jeep rush over there? If they spot an enemy, should I _then_ be prevented from area firing on that stand of trees? Of course not. I have a decent circle of pbem opponents. We play well together. I've had a few who've quit in mid-game, always when losing. As well, a rare gamey player: setup zone bombardment type. I think the community is a bit self-selecting when it comes to acceptable style of play. As for Bil sending a couple of KW's up the flanks, well, a good defense wouldn't let that happen, would it? GaJ is a bit too porous in that regard. The tall grass makes a solid defense a bear. I'm ambivalent on whether or not it's "gamey", especially in this circumstance. If I were playing vs. Bil, I'd not take offense. (Well, being who I am, of course I'd take offense. I'd drag that KW spy back to HQ and interrogate his ass! Attack is to the defense as 3 is to 1. Or somesuch. ) Ken -
Extensive Halftrack Vulnerability Testing Results
c3k replied to c3k's topic in Combat Mission Fortress Italy
Yes, wrong forum, indeed! But not the way you meant. (The latest code is NOT CMBN. Hence, I did not use CMBN to test that which was found within CMBN. I have my reasons... ) I've found out more than I ever wanted to know about how halftracks act, and react, within the game. Ken -
^^^ Me too! Ken

There have been MANY threads about this. To answer your questions, yes, there is a particular reason to avoid it in CMX2, and yes, every decision made by a business is a "business" decision.

They are fabulous for an operational perspective. Additionally, they have a lot of tactical analysis as well. They are free. Get 'em. The maps are great, as well. Ken

Bil has just posted his next turn. His recon elements are bearing fruit. GaJ's foxholes on the back slopes of the tits are of use to Bil. Germans would, by doctrine, register their defensive locations as target points to their artillery. That way, if they were pushed out, their fire support could nail the guys moving into the defensive works. A TRP would be good right there. Also, some minefields, as a form of booby trap. A missed opportunity. (I'm sure the points were spent elsewhere...) Ken -

I'm glad GaJ is keeping up the long range harassing fire. He cannot let Bil have the luxury of just sitting wherever he wants while he contemplates his next attack. Bil's peek-a-boo with his tanks over on Hill 130 has been nicely done. I think this is still tilted toward Bil, at this point. The key will be the infantry attack. If GaJ keeps his squads tight, the PzIV's and, especially, Brumbars will decimate them. GaJ has 3 more ATG's, 1 less than he started with. But he also has a lot more experience with the importance of FIRING his gun when has a chance. This has the form of a classic pre-attack probe right now. The real attack will, no doubt, unfold in about 10 minutes. -

Tank immobilized by hand grenades | Realistic?
c3k replied to ridethe415's topic in Combat Mission Battle for Normandy
Yes, they did have wipers. (Some.) They found them handy for dust and other obscurants. As well, they started using drip shields over them for run-off. German "technique" for close assault included tying two smoke candles together and having one guy toss the pair over the gun barrel. That kept the smoke billowing about the turret while another guy came up with the explosives. (Or crowbar and proper glowering expression.) Big balls. -

The slats have staggered second layers: that protects against direct entry. Still, upper engine decks and rear facings are less well armored than any other part. -
Vulnerability of Hanomag halftrack gunners..

And less so as the war progressed. Although, later models were equipped with a 15mm aircraft cannon rather than an MG42. (Obviously not for fire support. /sarcasm off) -

I agree with a lot of the camo/spotting comments. If the crew is supposed to work to camo the atg, why don't we have a "camo" command? Otherwise, I must use sharpies on my computer screen to create a dapple camo effect on my atg's and hope for the best. That's the ONLY control a player has over camo. To the game: interesting effect spotting the MG bunker will have. Bil will surely nail it... That'll be two defensive assets on the left that GaJ will've lost.
