  1. SPOILER - WARNING - SPOILER From the Hill 621 thread, the following was dropped by blow2, a reviewer of the game... . . . . . . . . . . (Are you really sure you want to know?) . . . . . . . . . . (If you are sure, then keep going.) . . . . . . . . . . --- You will probably love a couple of the CMBB single-play scenarios and at least one operation, the Kruglowka Railway. Basically, it has about a company of GD dug in (trenches), across a fordable river from a battlion of Russians. The GD has minimal ammo and one 81mm FO, two 75mm inf guns and a 20mm flak gun. You have six battles to survive against about a Btn of Russians initially, another on Turn 2 and more tanks etc etc on the way. The Russians are conscripts, but that scream of 'oorra' and the Human Wave attacks really put the fear of God up you. That and the HUGE artillery. I have a review copy of CMBB, incidentally, about 90 per cent of the finished thing. You will love it - especially the morale rules, which mean you can drop arty on tanks and the crews may be cowardly enough to abandon them. [ August 29, 2002, 05:37 PM: Message edited by: redeker ]
  2. Try Real Guts from the first ROW tourney by Wild Bill Wilder. It's found under "ROW - Real Guts" or something similar at Scenario Depot.
  3. I'll throw my hat in the ring, but I can't guarantee how much time I'll have available to spend on playtesting. redeker@maxinet.com
  4. Is it really that different from parking a few HMGs in the upper story of a large stone building under the influence of a +2 combat/+2 morale HQ? At least in ASL the chance of a building collapse was random, instead of the guaranteed event it is in CM.
  5. I got past the first five campaign game days with a friend (I was Russian, he was German) before my friend surrendered. It was largely leadership-based - my friend's leaders seemed to have helmets made out of newspaper, while my Russian officers and commissars had helmets made out of half-inch armor plate. All of my reinforcements seemed to be arriving intact, well-led, and with all their support weapons, while my friend's reinforcements were the opposite. By the end my leader/squad ratio was 1:4 (!), enough for at least a -1 leader on every MMG and a -2 on every HMG. Given that my friend's Germans had never really broken through my lines (only bent them a lot) he saw the writing on the wall and surrendered.
  6. Cool. Thanks and Godspeed in your map/scenario conversion.
  7. Hill 621, Paw of the Tiger, Breakout from Borisov, etc. are all great, but what really gets my mouth watering is RED BARRICADES. I'm sure someone has made or will make an operation to depict the struggle over the Tractor Works and/or Red Barricades factories. I also can't wait to run around the map at full throttle with some BT-5s...
  8. I can't tell right now, I'm at work...
  9. It was my understanding that view level 1 represented eye level for unmounted infantry, level 2 represented eye level of a commander in an "average" unbuttoned tank, and view 3 is the height of infantry in the second floor of a building.
  10. Darn redeker! You beat me out. I am running (just recently bought from Dell!) a 1.7 gig p4 on XP, 512 MB DDR RAM, and a 64 MB video card. And let me tell you that after playing CMBO with no fog for over a year, it looks great! Chad</font>
  11. There have been plenty of threads in the technical support forum, but the main requirement seems to be a 32 meg video card for maximum graphics goodness. It'll run on a lesser card, but will downsample graphics and lower the framerate. If you have 800+ MHz processor, 128+ MB RAM, and a 32 MB video card, you should be good to go. Of course, the game will run better on a 2 gig processor, 512 MB RAM, and a 128 MB video card.
  12. Not only that, they have unlimited LOS. I've parked halftracks in small alleyways between large buildings, where in RL a plane would have to approach parallel to the alley to even have a chance of seeing the vehicle. But in CM, tracers from a plane approaching from a perpendicular angle will lance right through the building and kill the halftrack.
  13. And whatever you do, keep your Wasp buttoned up! I've had good luck using a larger version of Tophat and Lowsky with Wasps, using Fast and Reverse (never Hunt). You don't necessarily have to move the Wasp out of sight, just in and out of flamethrower range - which happens to also be about the same as infantry AT range.
  14. There is historical precedent for using halftracks somewhat in this manner. I seem to recall reading somewhere (can't remember, and I'm at work ) that Jochen Peiper used the tactic of driving his recon troops hard, effectively dooming them to "recon by death". IIRC, the specific tactic used during the Bulge was to run a single SPW 251/1 a few hundred yards ahead of the main column. When an Allied ambush engaged (most likely destroyed) the HT, that was the signal for the lead elements of the column to dismount and attack. After the position was overcome, the troops mounted up again, and a new HT was chosen to be point.
  15. Is there really any question for a control freak like myself? It's gotta be Axis 1939.
  16. Scipio, I don't know how many copies they've sold, but Moon dropped this tidbit in his interview with you: "If we had thrown away our partnership with CDV because of a couple of ASCII characters had to be changed for leagal reasons, tens of thousands of customers in Europe that are playing Combat Mission Beyond Overlord now wouldn't be." So, "tens of thousands" of people have bought the game in Europe. At least we have a floor on the range of units sold. [ July 26, 2002, 07:47 PM: Message edited by: redeker ]
  17. At the municipality I work for, some of the powers that be don't quite get it... so when it came time to regulate cell towers, the result was to regulate "Wireless Telecommunications Facilities". So, we issue WTF permits, have a WTF ordinance, and have to interpret WTF regulations. Who says work isn't fun? Next thing you know, there's going to be a redevelopment program for "Facilities that are Under-Built And Renovated".
  18. I'm in favor of a small percentage of MPPs (maybe 10%) being available if a naval unit is disbanded in a friendly port. I'd also be in favor of allowing naval units to disband while at sea, with no MPPs being made available for such an action. Of course, the name of the command in that circumstance would have to be changed from "Disband" to "Scuttle".
  19. I would be very interested in attending a preview in either the Bay Area or Sac, as long as it isn't on August 10th. My 10-year anniversary getaway trumps a CMBB preview.
  20. Someone forgot to take his meds today. Oh, before I forget... Hi mom!
  21. I would caution you to download the demo first, to get a feel for it. While 90% of wargamers love it, some still have trouble with a title that is neither RTS nor hex-based. The WEGO interface is unique, and may take a little while to get used to.
  22. I wasn't planning on it, but I've been meaning to attend a race at the Speedway for some time. Heck, I've lived here for almost ten years and still haven't been to a race. Why? Will you be heading up here? P.S. A schedule I just pulled up on the Internet shows the Chico dates are September 5, 6 and 7. Is this correct?
