  1. 'looked so good, I thought it deserved a <punt> Any news on the progress of these GREAT mods? ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee
  2. Hey all, I know that there are a few mods for the H-39 out there, and I was wondering if they were anywhere to download. I did a search, and saw that Tiger did one a bit back. Anyhoo, I was hoping that this wonderful community could point me in the right direction, or drop me the files at "busboy@texramp.net" if they aren't anywhere to DL. I appreciate it, 'cause I describe the current looks of my H-39s as "chipped vomit on toast." (NO offense to the game producers, my computer is not what it needs to be... ) ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 3. Ok, first off the Pershing and the Super Pershing use the same textures... one just has a longer barrel. And I have the numbers for you spook, good luck. They are 3580-3589. Finally, I've made my own high res Pershing mod with a 2 tone camo scheme. However, all I did was scale up the default graphic, darken it to make it look less "cartoonie," sharpen and blend the oversized pixels that formed, then put an irregular dark green pattern on it. It looks pretty good on my graphic clunker, but its not anywhere nere accepted MOD standars... so I'll leave it to the experts. Spook, again, good luck! I'd like to see a good Pershing mod very badly. (a few things you might try are working with the track links on the turret sides, and adding some canvas where the mantlet meets the turret on the sides and top.) ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 4. Intellweenie, that was a joke, and I thought it was very funny myself. I understand your reaction, but he wasn't trying to insult anyone. ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 5. Hey all, This is kind of off topic, but I know that from this group I can get the answer, so I hope the moderators don't mind this thread. Anyway, I need info (and preferably pictures) on 1870s era military uniforms from Denmark and Germany. Links, discriptions, and pictures would help me greatly. Thanks in advance, ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee
  6. From personal experiance, those are gonna be: A lack of memory or, more likely Some texture file that is needed to complete the graphic is "bad." This could mean wrong size proportions, missing file, damaged file, ect. I found that out the hard way after I realized that the Mac ResEdit data files can't exceed 15 some megs, and trying to add more memory onto 'em (such as lots of hi res mods) will damage the actual ones. I also made some "scaled up" mods for my own use, and it an error happened in the transfer process there, I'd have that problem. GO back briefly and see if CM will run with the origional graphics, and I bet it will. ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 7. Hello all, Whenever I try to install the OpenGL thingie, it tells me that the "disk copy" could not be found. Is there something that I do not have, and need to get first? Thanks in advance ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee
  8. Patton noted in his diary that towards the end of WW2 in Germany, he came across some of his tanks with sandbag armor on them. He ordered the men to take the sandbags off at once. (at once probably meaning with much profanity and elequence ) He then went on to note that adding sandbags did almost nothing to incease armor protection, and put a greater strain on the suspension system. That made tanks slower (a BIG Patton no no) and less mechanicly reliable. On the other hand, I just finnished reading a book on some armor battalion, and it credits sandbags directly for saving tanks. However, the book gives the impression that a well organized layer of sand bags makes a sherman invelnerable to panzerfausts and 88s. Oh yes, and the book also kept saying that the Panther had an 88mm gun. The book was nice for personal accounts and "play by plays" of a few fights, but I don't trust any of its armored vehicle data. In my opinion, sandbags are useless on tanks. If I recall, you're average panzerfaust could penetrate 7 inches of armor. A premature detonation of one on a sandbag is just not going to make that much of a difference. I think modeling them for historical accuracy is needed (I think the + vehicles are designed to represent all the "oh my god" armor inhancements) and I think that sandbag/log/concrete/extra welded armor would make for some good mods. But I still think they're next to useless practicly, and therefore don't deserve more than the relitive footnote that they do and will get. ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 9. I'm also interested in this; if I had any real knowlage of how to use photoshop and how to start on a mod, I'd make one myself for the public. Currently I have a personal MOD, but its a very basic little upgrade, I don't recommend anyone ask for it. I'm interested too... the Pershing is probably my favorite WW2 tank. (Partially because of a U.S. bias I admit, but I just like its balance of powers and all 'round powerful look) ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 10. To my knowlage, the M8 was designed around the U.S.'s entery into WW2 as a recon vehicle, not a tank destroyer. At the time it was designed, we were upgunning because we knew the 37mm was obsolete. Also, the M18 was designed towards the war's end as a highly mobile tank destroyer. It was armed with a high velocity M1A1 76mm gun (I think a different gun than that mounted on the 76mm shermans?) This is NOT the same 37mm gun as on the Greyhound. ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 11. The theme from "The Great Escape" is good. Some Kelly's Heroes music is GREAT in a nice tank fight. ("Burning Bridges" and "All for the love of Sunshine" The Hogan's Heroes theme is fun too. However, I suggest you try the Gladiator soundtrack! Wow! ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee
  12. I taped the show too, and was especially impressed with the Pershing coverage. And, ofcourse, I agree the Pershing nailing the Panther was some of the finest footage I have ever seen. I noticed the show made no mention of sherman Jumbos, or Fireflys. Its a shame, as that would have shown some of the ideas to improve the tank. Finally, the 3rd Armored division never served under Patton. Patton's armored divisions are basicly those starting from the 4th and going up to the 10th, with the 11 and 12th serving a bit under him too. (I may be wrong on a few there with that group listing, but atleast most of that is true.) The 4th and 6th armored divisions were considered the U.S. army's "elite" armored divisions. Also, the 2nd Armored, which was mentioned as another "heavy" division was the one Patton commanded until he relieved that idiot Freedenthall or however you spell that Kassirine guy's name. Idiot. Also, is it just my imagination, or did the history channel reffer to General "Anzio" Clark as a good General? Yuk! ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee
  13. CC, and after that on Military Blunders; The battle of Kassirine Pass And after that; Secret aircraft of the luftwaffe Starting 8 Eastern, 7 Central. GREAT line up, glad I only work 'till five tomorrow. -Wait, what the hell did I just say? ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 14. my guess about the SPR tigers, which I have heard is wrong, is that they were hollywood made mockups of the real thing. (its been done before; the tank in Indiana Jones, the Last Crusade was made and even driven off of a cliff.) If I recall, the SPR tigers even had interlevied road wheels. I dunno what they could have "dressed up" to make 'em look that real. ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 15. Well, he's just no longer here to shine his wonderful life on this world, thats all. I love Hogan's Heroes, and I'm a whippersnapper compared to most anyone else who knows about it. I've seen every episode. One of my favorite lines was Carter on assisanating a traitor-actor: "I'll tell him I'm gonna take his picture, and inside I got a 37MM CANNON! <everyone stares> ...well... sawed off of course!" And I remember the episode Klink's quartet performed...the end of the episode went a little like this: <Klink is looking through some music Hogan gave him, and finds something he'd like to play, and begins setting up> (outside, in the meantime, Gen. Bulcauter and a high ranking luftwaffe officer are wondering how the allies knew where their new secret factory was.) LW officer: "They knew exactly where to hit us." Gen Bulcauter: Yes, those cursed Americans and heir Air Force! I never want to hear anything remotely related to the US Army Air Corps again! <inside the office, Klink has begun playing Hogan's music; it is nothing other than "Off we go into the wild blue yonder," the Air Force Hymn.> Also, Louis Lebeu (played by Robert Clarey) was a concentration camp surviver. I just love the irony of it all, and I love the show. God bless mien kommandant! ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee
  16. Am I mistaken, or does CM graphicly show a smoke puff when a piat round fires? (cause thats not accurate ) ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee
  17. A friend of mine's grandfather recently gave him an old WW2 coat that he "liberated" in Germany. It is a wool overcoat, and a dim green in color. On the left sleeve, there is a small green armband a few inches above the wrist. The Armband has "border troop" in german, followed by "dur DDR." As the most knowlaged WW2 junkie in my area, my buddie asked me about it and all I could figure was it might be some kind of volkstrum or customs guard. Anyone here know what it means? ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 18. Is it possible to destroy the large stone bridges? In various experiments I've not been able to blow 'em. -bus
  19. I'm a WW2OL follower, I've been keeping up with its progress ever since they first opened their website. I'm a regular on the WW2OL message boards. I have traveled to the Cornered Rat Software HQ in Bedford and met the whole lot of those fine fellows. Let me say that all the points complained about above have been addressed and solutions developed MONTHS ago. I'm not going to go into details, but WW2OL is not simply a free for all with a historical background. There are definate objectives, and orginization and "chain of command" will be "encouraged strongly" with a mission system. No one will be forced to do what they don't want to, but if you want to ever be more than fodder, you gotta work with a team for the good of your side. WW2OL will be a first person combat simulation of WW2, not a tactical simulation like CM. Some CM players will not like WW2OL because its going to be a vehicle simulator like Warbirds, but other CM players may like WW2OL even more than CM just due to its nature. There WILL be AI in WW2OL, it will handle some automated defensive duties, supply line systems, ect. AI will never lead troops into battle. The game is designed from the beginning to be a war, not a free for all. Some of you nay sayers really can't understand how it CANT be a free for all, however, I can say if you've studied the game as I and others have, it'll work. As for the development time criticism, I don't see the point. They haven't been hyping the game, or leading people on about a release date. Second, the game is getting close to open, public, (free) beta testing. I suggest that anyone here into WW2 participate in the open beta when time comes. Please, if you like the ideas of the game but have criticisms, stop in the WW2OL message boards (after reading the FAQ, some vets on our message boards are getting tired of answering the same questions over and over) and ask questions and make criticisms. ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 20. I'd like to try it, could you send it to me? (and yes, I intend to give feedbhack ) ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. Lee
  21. Well 86, your test is just fine, I think the problem is you don't fully understand what you're testing. In a match of M4s and M4A1s vs. PzKw IVs, I'd expect the PzKws to do better (assuming equal experiance.) Now, Sherman "Jumbos" have MASSIVE amounts of armor piled on them. The 85mm guns on your Mk. IVs are simply not going to kill them in a head to head match. King Tigers, OTOH, which have MUCH better guns will kill Jumbos (atleast eventually they'll find SOME sweet spot that they'll get through. Probably, it'll be the mantlet.) At the same time, the jumbos won't touch a King Tiger, as their 75mm guns just can't get through its armor. (120mm of sloping front upper hull, 180mm of slightly sloping turret face, if I recall) Now, if you keep the skill levels equal, witch you did, you are merely going to effect the time it takes for the superior force to kill the others. I recently did a test (not related to this, but still VERY on topic) of a single T26 Super Pershing with an Elite crew against 8 Mk. IVs and some Whirblebirds for extra targets. The T26 was immobilized but nothing ever killed it, because the Mk. IV ammo just couldn't punch through the armor. That is what happened in your tests. The Mk IVs can't kill jumbos, and the jimbos can't kill King Tigers ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 22. Well, an AP round is really just a solid piece of metal, so its not throwing shrapnel when it hits the ground, as it doesn't explode. The only way it'll hurt infantry is if it hits one directly. To my knowlage, ceasing main gun fire does not increase co ax fire, tho someone else may proove me wrong. So, is there a reason to keep up your AP fire? Yes. The psycological effect of an 88mm round smacking down near you and going 800 mps is going to unnerve his troops. You may not kill any of 'em with AP rounds, but unless they're elite fanatical troops, they're gonna think twice about following their general's orders and doing a frontal assault. ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 23. I'd imagine, though have not yet confirmed that skill would effect the accuracy of the planes. They're under artillery if I recall, and I bet that a fighter bomber selected in "elite" skill would be alot more of a threat than a "conscript." What skill levels were being used in the above mentioned games, if anyone remembers? ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 24. Busboy here, current CO of the 99th Dragons of WBs fame. I'm currently inactive, waiting for WW2OL to come out, and I got tired of some things with iEN, namely Mac support and some payment issues... I hope I'll be able to fly with you guys in some other great game in the future. ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E. 25. I've got two good ones I was playing the "breach the west wall" operation. The krauts had 2 Panthers that were also covered by a 88mm pillbox. These Panthers are just about to have a field day on me, my tanks don't have LOS on 'em and their just a hammerin away on my Arty Spotter squad that had its jeep blown out from under it. I know I need some heroics to take 'em, so I have a M4A3 75, an M4A3 105 and an M8 greyhound charge 'em to a POINT BLANK side shot. The 88 pillbox got my Sherman 75 in the charge, but my Sherman 105 crests the hill right infront of them when their turrets are traversed to the side to pop my arty spotter. the Sherman runs between them, and rotates that little stub cannon and NAILS one panther in its side, causing it to cook off. The other Panther starts rotating its turret, but I watch in glee as its turret isn't gonna beat my Sherman to the draw. However, it is at this time that that 88mm pillbox poped it. However, fateis still with me, as the Panther's turret is traversed the other way, my M8 comes roaring up, again point blank and puts a 37mm round right through the bottom hull knockin the fellow out. He then proceeded to try to reverese from the maw of that 88mm pillbox, but he didn't make it. However, by killing those Panthers (which I did in turn 2) the krauts had lost all their mobile firepower. I then proceeded to pour troops across a bridge on his right flank, with only a slight pause required to knock out the 4 pillboxes he had right at the bridge. After that, it was a simple matter of having my light tanks zip up behind their damn pillboxes and poping their doors until they died. I had the battle surely won by turn 5. I was pretty proud of my skill, guts, and plain luck! My second one: I was playing the "Canyon Escape" mission that some genus made (great fun, that scenario) and I had one squad of French troops on the first cliff facethat the kraut armor had to go by. Well, a nearby bazooka and arty was wrecking havoc, so the armor had to just press on. However, the kraut infantry got the great idea of charging up the hill to silence the infantry on the crest. My principal squad and their commnand squad were in a small cluster of trees, with another suqad on their flank. The Germans sent aprox. 6 full infantry squads, 3 squad leaders, and the crews of 4 knocked out vehicles to try to take my cluster of trees. Combined with the grenades, hand o hand combat, and the withering fire as they crested the hill, they all died. The Germans gave up on simple, direct assault, so they had a stug begin to bombard my position. The second shot set the fron of the cliff on fire, blocking off their line of sight! That squad was low on ammo now, so I ordered them and their surviving buddies fron nearby to withdraw to a nearby house. Now, the Germans simply marched up the hill, so I ordered them off the map to savor their victory rather than get killed. A short time later a squad of American infantry came on the map from the same way they went off. I can just imagine how cocky theywere... I think in total they caused some 90 casualtiues with a loss of maybe 4 of their own... ------------------ busboy CO, 99th Dragons A Warbirds Squadron 'We will heat you up' "It is well that war is so terrible, else we would grow too fond of it." -Robert E.
