1. I have skipped over the CM2 threads in the past as I've only had the game for a few months, and didn't know enough about CM to start chiming in about CM2. But, now I know enough to get myself into trouble so here goes . . . 1.) The only major graphic change I'd like to see is progressive damage to buildings and improved rubble graphics. 2.) Dummy minefields. Had a blast w/them in ASL. Would have to limit their availability though. 3.) Extreme Fog of War Option (ala Talonsoft - don't flame me). For example; if your units are out of command, you may or may not get an accurate reading of morale, ammunition, rest level etc. You think that hidden but out of command 'schreck still has two rounds left, but alas, he is out of ammo (you lost count of his shots in that confusing opening firefight), and that pesky T34-85 rolls up your flank. ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
2. . . . and yes, I had to go back and edit this message twice. Wow, this Friday the 13th stuff is for real. Good thing my Y2K bunker is still well stocked.
3. I recently stumbled across this site. It is quite informative, and has some in depth information on the dreaded/beloved Panzerfaust, and many other German small arms. I thought some of you may enjoy it. Happy Friday the 13th. http://www.geocities.com/Augusta/8172/panzerfaust.htm ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM. 4.
quote:
Originally posted by TR12: Anyone seen 'A long days dieing' about 3 British Paras stuck behind German lines. Now that was a gritty no holds barred film. The killing was really personal and it brings home the horrors of war. I believe it stared David Hemmings.

Never heard of this one. Have to check it out.
5. This might help. It is a TO&E done for the Steel Panthers series of games. Search some of the book threads, I remember seeing mention of good TO&E sources in there as well. The Scenario Design forum may have some good info as well. Good luck http://www.wargamer.com/sp1/addons/toesam.zip
6. Check out the tread in the CM Scenario Talk Forum concerning Operatins Start Lines. It probably is caused by the "no mans land" setting. ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM. [This message has been edited by Four Stringer (edited 10-12-2000).]
7. Hola! Solidarity brother newbie! I'm still pretty green myself, but I have a suggestion for you and any other recruits as far as this forum is concerned. From the main CM thread menu, select "show all topics." Then browse through all the threads, scan the ones that look interesting, but make sure to read the locked threads. These will be very instructive; you'll become familiar with all of the "hot button" issues in CM, you'll learn who the arrogant jerks are, who can be counted on to provide wisdom and guidance, who the "flamers" are (these guys are usually members of the arrogant jerks club), you'll learn what to say, and most importantly, what NOT to say in a thread, etc etc. Give it a try when you have some free time . . . like when you're at work and can't play CM. Gotta' go, here comes the boss!
8. I have mixed feelings about "The Thin Red Line." If I hadn't read the book first, I probably would've liked it much more. It was a beautifully shot movie, and I liked it otherwise. I just think it strayed too much from the book. "Cross of Iron." Man, how did I leave that one off of my top 5. D'OH! "Winter War" sounds very interesting. Is it available w/English subtitles? Anyone? I'm not interested in dubbed movies (Godzilla excepted )
9. I hear you! I feel betrayed by CM!! Hollywood would NEVER lie to me!! I tried to drive my Tiger though a house like in "Kelly's Heros," and stupid silly CM would'nt let me! How fake! I'm throwing this program away! Give me Panzer General III-D any day! p.s. "Kelly's Heros" missed my top 5 war movies by one. ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
10. You know, I thought I had a decent grip on military history before I came in here. Well, another bubble burst. Please, if at all possible, mention books that back up your arguments. I have a lot of reading to catch up on. Kudos to all for keeping this discussion flame free and informative. ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
11.
quote:
Originally posted by TankDawg: Amazed that no one has said Saving Pvt. Ryan. Whether you liked the movie or not, simply the greatest war scene of any movie, anywhere.

I'd definitely put "Saving Pvt Ryan" in the top 5. The Omaha Beach scene was utterly stunning on the big screen (ain't too shabby on DVD). I think the sound effects were particularly good. The sound of bullets smacking the sand or zinging through the air actually made me want to scrunch my head down. "The Battle of Britain" and the original "All Quiet on the Western Front" would round out my top 5 ("Das Boot" and "Battleground" being 1 & 2). ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
12. I'd have to agree w/Speedy. "Das Boot" A true classic, directors cut or theatrical release. However, I'd like to HIGHLY recommend one that is often overlooked. "Battleground." It was released in 1949, starred Van Johnson and James Whitmore. The director, William Wellman won the Academy Award for it that year. It is a very realistic, gritty movie about a 101st Abn squad in the Battle of the Bulge. A "film noir" war movie if you will. It was quite a controversial movie as it portrayed American troops breaking under fire and running away (which was still a "no no" at that time). The battles are staged quite realistically; quick chaotic firefights, and not the huge, staged epic battles ala "The Longest Day" (I dig the "Longest Day" too . . . any movie w/the Duke AND Sean Connery is cool). ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
13.
quote:
Originally posted by CavScout: I am sure it is. I wonder if people who can't debate a point try and get it locked-up instead...

I could care less if this thread and others like it get locked up or not, and I certainly did not lobby or request that it should happen to this thread. I was simply making a smart a**ed comment directed at those who turn thought provoking threads (like this one) into flame fests. I'll take care not to sink to the juvenile level of the "flamers" in future posts. Silly me. ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM. 14. My pleasure. ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
15. But my big brother can beat up your big brother. nyahh nyahh nyahhh ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
16. Darn, I thought it was going to be something cool like the "deathfart" cheat in Rainbow Six/Rogue Spear. Or at least something funny like the "bignoggin."
17. I found about it in a Close Combat forum, and was assimilated soon after.
18. M. Bates, why would you skip the sound mod? I'm curious if you just like the original sounds better (which were fine), or have you run into probs w/ the sound mod? I bit the bullet, and downloaded all 17mb of the sound mod on my tired old 56k dial up, and I love 'em. No probs running them either. I have most of the uniform mods, a few new tank skins, and, of course, the Kelly's Heros pics, but I skipped the hi-res grass etc becuase they were too much for my old PII266 VooDoo2 set up. Oh well. ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
19. Well said all! I think all @ BTS should be justifiably proud of this product. As close to perfection as one could reasonably expect; and from their willingness to listen to their customers, it will only get closer. The only thing I truly miss about playing ASL is the face to face aspect. All of you old ASL-ers remember . . . putting on your best poker face as your opponent blunders into the kill zone of your HIP AT team. Or the look of anguish on his eyes when he(she?) rolls boxcars on that crucial die roll, etc etc. Once again. Well done BTS!! ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
20. I agree that the lack of ROE type orders can be frustrating . . . especially when that Tiger you were about to ambush blasts your trusty 'ol Sherman because it decided to rotate and shoot at squirrels (not hamsters). However, I don't get too bent out of shape about these type of things because I think the game balances out well in the end (and that's why I think its the best Tac level wargame yet). Yeah, your units may do "stupid" things like the examples mentioned above (and elsewhere), but how many WWII commanders had the luxury of pausing the action every 60 seconds, or were able to levitate a up in the air and get a God's-Eye overview of the battlefield, or slide over to the enemy POV and make sure you don't blunder into poor ground? For an interesting game, play one EXCLUSIVELY from the 1st person ground level view, and try only to "look" from where your units are located. It's tough. ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
21. Yeah, silly me. I forgot how wrapped up people get with games, whether its their kids soccer match or a computer game. They seem to be blind to the word game. Oh well. My apologies if I've fanned flames or re-opened any wounds. Being a musician, I should know better that to ask questions on subjective topics. D'OH! ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
22. For me, the answer is no. I think Combat Mission is definately the better game, but I still like the tension and anxiety that the real time game style used in Close Combat creates. What got me thinking about this was the complete "defection" of a good friend of mine over to CM. He has written off Close Combat; I'm only bummed about this because he was a reliable, challenging and sportsmanlike opponent (I've run into quite a few jerks over in the Zone). So, what are your thoughts? Does Close Combat have anything to offer you, or are those CD's collecting dust and/or coffee stains? p.s. Maybe I'll defect completely once the TCP/IP patch is available. ------------------ I used to have a life, now I have CM.
