  1. Yeah what was BTS thinking when adding FOW! It ruins everything, especially my carefully planned attack when a 88mm was identified as a IG and nobody noticed the MG bunker right behind it! Thanks for the great game BTS ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  2. As for websites, sure thing, check out the "Resources" link on this website. It'll get you started on some very good sites, which will then lead to many more. Have fun! ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  3. 100k posts, is that just in the Peng thread =)? ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  4. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by M Hofbauer: 4. Do trees give better cover? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> In "Citizen Soldier" by Stephen Ambrose he talks about the Hurtgen Forest Campaign and the fact that the Germans fused the shells to go off at the slightest impact, thus exploding in the treetops and showering the prone infantry. 2 lessons were learned from this, 1) Put cover over your foxhole in the forest and 2) Stand up and against a tree when under that type of arty attack. So you were probably correct in bringing the troops out of cover, but the TacAI always will return troops to cover when under attack, so you're kinda SOL. The TacAi is so good at so many other things that I think we can forgive this very small point, after all we want BTS to keep working on the expansion pack and CM2! ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  5. p.s. I found this place on the CM web ring, had a good list of books imho, http://www.siteonsound.com/CMReadingList.htm ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  6. Has anyone read : Panzer Commander: The Memoirs of Colonel Hans Von Luck Saw it on BN, was wondering if it was worth the $. ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  7. I was going to design a couple of ASP pages that users could upload (or link to) a PBEM file, with description, points, limitations, etc then other users could come to the site and "check out" a PBEM file which would then remove that PBEM file from being used again. This way a person could easily find a person to play against wihthout resorting to ladders and the like. Thoughts? I have been very busy coding lately, I haven't done a PBEM yet so there might be some technical limitation to the above that I don't know. But I thought it was a good way to bring people together. Any good or just a waste of time? ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  8. CM has a very simple hit model. If the AI is firing on you then it always hits the weakest point on your armor, If YOU firing on AI, then you always hit the thickest part of the armor. See really simple! (p.s. sorry for the bad humor!) ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  9. I love threads like this, Just spent 200 bucks on BN's website. Hope all your recommendations are good! ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  10. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by dumbo: Andreas: Interesting German for the British was "Tommies" do you know any of the nicknames for other nationalities in the war? Rumanians and italians would be of particular interest to me. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> I believe the Germans called them the "Surrenderi's" which loosely translated means "The guys you don't want on your flanks when the foe attacks". sorry for the very bad humor! ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  11. Tanks in CM are (more realistically compared to every other game out there, imho) quite fragile beasts. What has worked for me (espescially when playing allies) is a small section of infantry for scouts on different parts of the battlefield. Usually I only expose tanks after I have a much better idea of what I'm up against. Also using view 1 and finding a good hiding spot which affords you cover from the front but allows you to fire to a small section to your flanks is really helpful in limiting exposure. Just my 1 weekends worth of gameplay advice. I'm sure you'll get a ton more =) ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  12. I doubt the interest will vary too much for CM2. BTS makes an excellent game, excellent games are hard to find, I am sure 100% of the people who bought CM will buy CM2. I will actually enjoy CM2 a little more because I really hate watching the Ami's die (this not being a factor in CM2), punishment for me being such a bad commander I guess. ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki [This message has been edited by Banshee (edited 08-21-2000).]
  13. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Mirage2k: Reactive armor has always kind of confused me. Wouldn't it afford protection for only one hit? Is it replaced after a battle? -Andrew <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Yes only one hit, but there is many "blocks" of reactive armor covering a tank, so the chance of hitting the exact same spot is less likely. Also protecting from one hit it no small thing. As for the original topic, I think after BTS finishes CM2-CM4 the computing power to the general public would be such that the larger ranges and maps could be handled much better for such a modern engagement. ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  14. In Citizen Soldiers by Stephen Ambrose he talks about the Siegfried Line assault (which VoT is supposed to represent). He relayed the scale and power of the initial artillery bombardment (which was huge) and the fact that it really did nothing other than remove camouflage from the bunkers. Several times there was stories about tanks bouncing rounds off the back of the bunkers. From his story telling there was only 2 "sure" ways to take out a bunker, engineers and a 155mm artillery piece firing direct fire. So I think a concrete bunker not being taken out by artillery is very accurate. Also the bazooka wouldnt be able to penetrate a concrete bunker, no way no how. Hope this helps. ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki [This message has been edited by Banshee (edited 08-19-2000).]
  15. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Andre76: Ahh.. new QB, and guess what it happend again! The AI (Allies) had three FO (76mm,104mm and 144mm) and did nothing but fire smoke. The game ended with total german victory.... Maybe this is something for BTS to look into? I mean, it's not something that happens a few times, it occurs often and is in my view, a stupid use of heavy arty (100+mm). Yes, *sometimes* it can be effective, but as far as I've seen, the AI made a complete ass of himself everytime! <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Been playing the full version the last couple days (dying a lot!) and I "RTFM" and that explained the whole issue. With FO's the # of rounds you get is fixed regardless of the type of shell you fire, so if you have a 12 round fire mission you could fire 12 smoke and the artillery battery would have filled it's "obligation". I think the reason I was confused was I was so used to the onboard mortars which allow a # of rounds smoke and a # of rounds HE. As long as it all makes sense I'm happy. ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  16. Thinking back as the first scenario I played with CM was VoT. I pushed everything on the flanks, and I didnt know about smoke then, it was a glorious charge on the side w/o the tanks, I was surprised that as many got through the hail of gunfire, then the panther appeared, man did he really screw the pooch, luckily I got a Engineer squad close enough to knock him out. Nowadays I just push the flanks , smoke the right (from the american perspective) with the 105's sitting on that big hill as overwatch, seems to work fairly well. Only time it messes up is when one of the 105's doesnt survive the duel with the AT bunker. Game just came in the mail today, woot, new scenarios!! Can't wait! ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Juju: Hi Banshee, and welcome to the board! First of all, do yourself a favor and order this game ASAP. I promise you, you won't be sorry. Ah, never mind, I now see you already did! As for the supposed 81MM bug: That is indeed not what's supposed to happen. Did you experience this once, or more often? first time I hear about this. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> Game just came in the mail! So i will test it with this version, I could reliably recreate this occurence (81mm firing all smoke then cant fire any HE) in VoT. I'll try in other scenarios, it might just be a demo thing, was never a big deal just something I noticed when I played VoT for the millionth time. What would happen is I would smoke the heck out of one side and then the FO's would no longer have an option for Target (or Target Wide, Smoke, or Cancel Target). Can't wait to get my butt kicked via PBEM, see ya'll on the battle field. I'll be in the 3rd crater on the right. ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki
  18. I was thinking this was a bug with the 81mm mortars (Note: I only have the demo copy, full version on order). When using the 81mm to smoke and running out of rounds the 81mm people no longer will fire regular HE, but if I smoke till a few rounds left then HE I have a full load of HE to fire. Just a thought. ps. This is my first post. pss. I have my anti-assimilation underwear on today, so dont even think about it Borg! ------------------ Veni, vidi, panzerschrecki [This message has been edited by Banshee (edited 08-17-2000).]
