CM2 fans VS. CM fans, it's comin!!!!
The Commissar replied to scooleen's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
As a fan of the Myth community, I know what youre talking about. I dont think it will be this way for CM, though. The only people I can see NOT playing CM2 will be those few that are not comfortable about playing as "bad guy VS bad guy". These are an extreme minority, however, so I dont forsee a large split any time soon, if ever. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" -
Enemy at the Gates Review

Well said, Guy w/ Gun! Trouble is, when people specialize in a field (or just know a lot about something), they tend to like showing off their knowledge by pointing out every inaccuracy. It makes them look smarter. No trouble with it, I suppose, we all like to feel inteligent. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" -
Actually, I mentioned it not only because of the movie, but also because I got several of my sharpshooters get run over by a depleted squad an enemy rushed into the building. Again, comparing it to CC3 (not a very wise thing I'll admit) it was much tougher. Im not real sure how much training they did get, maybe it was small stuff like jason said. I would like them to be somewhat more effective then sharpshooters in CM. At least I hope that is the case, they were more effective instead of being just another "good shot". ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"

I havent checked one of these whachucallit threads in a while, but happened to click on this one out of boredom. Lo and behold, some rodent called me a git. Well, sir rodent, I would do something but I wont. Why you ask? Is it because I a low-browed fool? Can it be related to my lack of wit? Am I - wait, I came here to say something bad about YOU, didn't I? The case happens to be that if I insult you, I would have to fight you. Since I prefer whenever possible not to fight small, furry mammals who poop on themselves and roll around in sawdust, I would much rather avoid you instead. Well, just letting you know I didnt let you slide, m8. Cheery-o. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"

COMBAT MISSIONS: Armour Tactics - Lynx
The Commissar replied to Manx_CM's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
The Lynx is one of those tanks which require proficiency and skill to use. Due to its extremely weak cannon and light armor, dont expect the Lynx to win any sort of AT confrontation unless it is on another soft-skinned AFV and preferably from an ambush or a weak side. Hell, a .50 caliber HMG from a halftrack can easily take it out! Ive found that the Lynx can be used in a pack or alone, but must always have some form of infantry/armor support. The Lynx is best used as a mobile flak gun, in an AP role. Thanks to its quick rate of fire, I have seen the Lynx, in conjunction with infantry, easily suppress and rout the enemy. AT weapons such as bazookas will have an especially difficult time of hiting the Lynx, because it is so small and can move about pretty quickly. Keep the Lynx behind your infantry and don't expose it much. It cannot survive a hit from any sort of weapon, even a rifle grenade. Also, keep it moving, use hit and run tactics. The Lynx will be able, if used correctly, in a short ammount of time to do its duty of suppressing/routing a squad or even a whole platoon and getting out of there, pronto. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" [This message has been edited by The Commissar (edited 03-17-2001).] -
Any feedback on AMD T-birds and CM?
The Commissar replied to gunnergoz's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Athalon T-Bird 1 GHz 256 PC133 RAM TNT2, 32MB card 30 Gig HD The game runs superbly well, and I havent seen a single slow down despite running many large scenarios. Unfortunately, I must report that AI calculations dont change pace in the least. That is, when you finish planning a turn and you wait for the AI to finish planing. Quite annoying with big maps. Is there any way to speed this up? ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" -

Enemy at the Gates Review
The Commissar replied to CrapGame's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Teach, I agree with you on the most part, but where did you say there were movies with good Russian accents? Ive seen many and they sounded hacked and rather silly. When my folks and I watch a English movie with supposed Russians in it, we usually end up laughing at the butchered words and phrases. For example, I nearly craped my pants when I heard the evil Russian terrorist yell "Baaa-ladi!!" in "Air Force 1". Then again, that wasn't a good movie, period. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" [This message has been edited by The Commissar (edited 03-17-2001).] -
OK, I did a search and came up with so many results dealing with snipers, I dreaded looking at more then half a dozen. Still, I dint find what I was looking for so I'll as here. I know this isn't the best source to go by, but...in CC3 (ducks and looks around to make sure no one is throwing themselves on me with a butcher knife) it mentioned that snipers were supposedly trained in hand to hand combat. OK - DONT[b\] want to start any flames here or nothing, but is there any truth behind this? It would certaintly be more interesting to have my sniper fight off attackers rather then sit there and stare dumbly at the enemy at close range. Also, sniper to sniper duels would actually happen at close range (see the "Enemy at the Gates scenario" thread to find out what happens in CM at the moment). Would this be plausible to model for CM2, or am I speaking crap due to the fact that I got this info from a game that isnt exactly know for its uber-realism. Thanks in advance. A NEW OUTLOOK on an OLD MYSTERY.
The Commissar replied to Maximus's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
ROFL! I swear, this will be my new #1 saying. Good one, deanco, thanks for the laugh Oh, and I have absolutely nothing to contribute to this thread, except I do play FPS, sims, RTS, and even adventure games. Im still a pretty good wargamer, if my win/loss ratio is anything to go by. So really, that doesnt prove much. If you have the energy and persistance to do a real study, Maximus, I would suggest getting opinions of more then a hundred people, before expecting anyone to take it seriously. An opinion of one young kid really doesnt account for much. Anyway, thanks again for the laugh, deanco. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" -
shogun or command mission
The Commissar replied to Private Paurtz's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I will add some personal experience from the multiplayer side of Shogun's gameplay: Shogun's units are very unbalanced as well. The fact that there is a small limit on the number of formations you can buy (there are onyl 15 slots to choose from), there isnt much room for strategic flexibility. Fill up all your slots with low honour (Shogun's name for experience) "Warrior Monks" and you've got a force no one can beat. Because attackers and defenders get the same amount om koku (points) to spend on their men, the defender can sit on a hill and enjoy all the advantages without any drawbacks. Muliplayer whores enjoy this sort of inbalance, and play these sorts of game specifically to gain rank. The game crashes VERY often in multiplayer, and lags like a b!tch. Since singleplayer gets boring quick, I wont even mention it. -
AAR of the Year - Fionn vs. Claymore
The Commissar replied to Croda's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Are they alowed to read each other's AAR's where each of them can see what the other is doing? Kind of a temptation there, I should think... ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" -
Had about 7 games going, and now down to only 2 ! Speaking of PBEM...does anyone here want a game? I'd like an opponent who considers themselves "good" or at least above average. I think I need to get spanked once in a while (not in that way, you freaks ). Can infantry be "crunched"?
The Commissar replied to Hilltopper's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
I think this would be a nice feature for CM2. Mass tank waves were bound to cause more damage to unprotected infantry on a steppe then on the Western front. -
Vehicles dont block LOS because it would be too difficult to calculate it. Especially on the move. The only time they do block LOS is when they are on fire and smoking. ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"

I had to reinstall CM and now all my mods are gone. I got all the basics down for now, but Im sadly lacking the fire and explosion graphics. The CMHQ had them, but now the third page of the "Special Effects" section which had these mods is not there any more. It gives me an "HTTP Error" Matt, can you fix this or can some kind soul send me the mods? Thanks in advance, Cheers!

I was watching the trailer for Enemy at the Gates (no, this is not about the movie) and one particular detail caught my eye: When the Soviet troops were getting ready to charge the German positions, one officer (possible a Company/Platoon commander) blew a whistle to signal the charge. That left me wondering. Was this used often? I would imagine it is not unrealistic, since Soviets did not have much radios and a large attack would have to be coordinated somehow for it to have any chance at success. So the whistle, signaling the charge could have been used. I would imagine, however, that this would also be a disadvantage in some cases, because it would warn the Germans of the charge. Now to relate this with CM2: When we charge an enemy position in the game, could this whistle be generated? The reason would not be just cosmetic. The enemy would be warned of the charge due to the whistle, and would this be alert and maybe turn into the direction of the sound (wouldn't you if you though a wave of men was about to wash over you if you did turn about and fight them?). Also, due to the unreliability of conscripts in CM, performing orders too early or too late, the whistle could promote an almost instant reaction. After all, the troops would have probably been trained to listen for the sound and would thus know what to do when it was heard. There arises a few questions. Historical: Can anyone confirm whether this was even used, and if so, for how long? Only the early years maybe? Then again, the movie is based in Stalingrad. The keyword, of course, is "movie". Game related: Like, for example, when would the whistle be used and when not? Im sure a platoon advance did not require a whistle, but a company advance could. What counts as a charge? I think if you command your men to "Run" at a position held by the enemy, the computer would count this as a charge, and the whistle would be heard. How many men must charge for the whistle to be used? I think a company is good enough, but as I have no real sources on this, I'd like to take some suggestions from the experts. Anyway, thats about all. What do you guys think? I found a way to improve CM for Windows users!
The Commissar replied to Canuck's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
Id have to agree, sadly. Besides, what "advantages" are we speaking of here? Less games? Less programs that work for your system? Being without CM-mods until some guy made it work for the Mac a few months back? -
How important is winning at PBEM to you?
The Commissar replied to Lawyer's topic in Combat Mission Archive #3 (2001)
My attitude varies depending on the situation. Sometimes, when I am being beaten down but still feel I have the men and resources to at least pull off a tie or give my opponent no more then a minor victory, I will continue playing. When I see that all I have left is a Jeep, a zook, and a few empty mortars to fight off a batallion of Axis forces, I will give up. There is no point in prolonging the inevitable. I have had a few experiences where opponents would give up half way, when they could have still fought more and got some victory points away from me. I dont appreciate it, but I can see them not wanting to waste another 2 weeks on playing a match that they feel cannot be won. Better to start another game in that case, and see if you can turn the tables. Cheers! ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back" -

*cough* *gag* *barf* *spit* Yuck...I was just exposed to a Mac-like thingy! How disgustingly disgusting...*Baaarf* Hi Dad! -
A good way to get the most out of your SMG's is to keep them hidden. This goes especially well for Defense and Meeting Engagements. With either one, your opponent will be coming in your direction and if the terrain has a lot of cover (I never buy SMG's when I dont have a lot of buildings or woods on the map) it is easy to conceal your men in it. When those Rifle squads setp on you, open up and most will be wiped out/broken within seconds. On the attack it gets trickier, but if you manage to close that distance which can be painful, they are still very good. Note that the VG SMG's make closing the distance very painful, seeing as how you only have 8 men. When even a few of those get killed, efficiency is greatly reduced. Which is why I LOVE Girbsjager (butchered spelling, forgive me). However, I have heard from a generally ticked off PBEM opponent that the mountain troops were a rarity on the Western front. Oh well... ------------------ "...Every position, every meter of Soviet soil must be defended to the last drop of blood..." - Segment from Order 227 "Not a step back"
