  1. Actually, I do have a convoy moving into an ambush scenario that I had created. The difference is that in my scenario there is only *one* way to go for vehicles, through a twisty and turny canyon. So the trucks et al have no choice but to run the gauntlet. It's called "Canyon Escape" and it's located here: http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm
  2. Do you have flag that the side with the trucks are going to? You might want to give your trucks ELITE morale so they don't piss in their boots and run.
  3. I found it pretty offensive as well. I like the odd black humour myself but I'm very surprised that a brand like Jim Beam would consent to such an ad. I didn't crack a smile. Imagine if, in the middle of Saving Private Ryan, it turned into a smoking ad. Not good. ------------------ ---- To download my scenarios: go to http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm
  4. that's funny. Those pictures were taken in the same location that the Panzer Elite making of videos were taken.
  5. Regarding China, Japan was pretty much floundering in China due to its immense size leading to overstretched communications. As long as the Generalissimo and Mao refused to surrender and kept on the run or out of reach, China was big sink hole for Japanese military resources that were needed elsewhere. China was supposed to be the fuel for Japanese ambitions elsewhere and although Japan held the coastal cities, it couldn't harbour ambitions against India or against Russian Siberia without eliminating the various resisting forces (Mao, Nationalists, warlords) in the south and northwest. Japan regularly wiped the floor with their opposition whenever they were encountered in the field but where there was no fighting, its troops sat, ate up resources and became very demoralized due to guerilla tactics and deprivations. America's biggest fear was that Chiang Kai Chek would make a deal with Japan for power sharing so that he would have a free hand against Mao, who he always saw as his prime enemy. At the same time, that could never have happened because America was propping up Chiang and his own cronies would have fallen out over such a decision. If for some reason Chiang was eliminated, then some or all of the warlords who made up his cabinet might have made peace with the Japanese in exchange for power or at least detente so they could deal with Mao. Then the Japanese would have been free to consolidate some of their gains in SE Asia. That said, I don't think there was anything Japan could have done vs American sea power and of course the bomb. Even if they had removed the distraction of Chinese opposition they still would have been isolated on each island in the Pacific and ground down. ------------------ ---- To download my scenarios: go to http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm
  6. My roommate who is a programmer at Relic took one look at CM and said that it looks like they need better lighting badly. Toned down would definitely save the look a bit. However, the more I play it the more I want the units to stand out because I am playing a game dammit, not a painting and I want to be able to see everything. ------------------ ---- To download my scenarios: go to http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm
  7. Sorry to act like a salesman for my company but we have developed a Java audio streaming technology that might do for this purpose. http://www.rdmailer.com For 56k it should be ok because it auto-detects the connection bit rate and sends out a .22 or .44kHz stream for the listener. In fact, if someone wants to send me the sample I will host it as a test. Well? send here keith@dsny.com ------------------ ---- To download my scenarios: go to http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm
  8. The game looks interesting and I really enjoy that historical period. Also the fact that it involves territories that are smaller than the major countries I find pretty fascinating as well. Maybe I can take control of a Swiss canton or too and see what kind of havoc I can create in northern 'italy'. ------------------ ---- To download my scenarios: go to http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm
  9. I work in the software industry so you can wear generally whatever you want unless it shows off too much skin or is getting smelly. I bookmarked the site because I have my eye on one of the tank T-shirts. Yes, I am a geek. ------------------ ---- To download my scenarios: go to http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm
  10. I think it's pretty sensible policy to look at ways the military can be useful outside of outright war. A toe to toe battle is really the end result of a lot of breakdowns in policy and an unrealised way of containing conflict. How many conflicts could be averted by having 'cooling down periods', monitoring, and other steps to get two sides talking instead of taking shots across a border? However, this is not likely what the U.S. military is thinking of. This is what I would like to see happen with a more responsive UN (or other body). What is a bit more disturbing, however, is the work the U.S. military could be doing in other countries supporting counter-insurgency, such as what is happening in Colombia. Of course, without declaring war, the U.S. could be committing their military aiding foreign governments. From a foreign policy standpoint, this is just another way of containing conflict and making sure it doesn't affect U.S. interests beyond the borders of a foreign country. From a human rights and domestic policy standpoint, this will always be troubling.

  12. Unlike most CMers I play Combat Mission purely as a game. I do have a background in reading WWII history and know a fair bit about it (certainly nothing approaching many of the regular CM forum members though) but I just found CM to be a really fun game. Therefore, when I design a map, I do so without resorting to history but according to the rules, even the gamier ones. I love 'scripting' events by using the geography I've created and bringing in reinforcements at what I think are dramatic moments.
  13. Smaller battles surely. I have very little time outside of work, then personal projects (comic book), then social life (dating). If I have only an hour to play some sort of game a night I'm afraid Half-Life: Counterstrike wins out over CM. However, if I have 2-3 hours I will spend half of it designing a scenario and the other half testing it.
  14. You can also check out my own scenarios here: http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm My scenarios are all fictional and I would like to think treat Combat Mission more like a game than a sim.
  15. Use wheat field. It looks better and although it doesn't game model like sand should, it really doesn't make a lot of difference as troops in the open will still get gunned down like dominoes.
  16. The original poster brought up the ID software example and then others brought up the Half Life example. These two situations were quite different from each other. id software sells their engine outright. They make the source code available to other companies that put up the cash, wish them luck and let the purchaser go through the code by themselves. Carmack does not do tech support except by posting his .plan files which anyone can read. That means Carmack can just go on and do whatever he wants with future engines. id does not do any marketing of their engines, the various iterations of Quake *is* the marketing. Half Life started out based upon the Quake 2 engine but then developed over time so that most of the code now is their own (Team Fortress 2 will be entirely Valve code). Their approach to the mod community has been more of a strategy than id's in that they have a team of developers, managers and other personnel devoted at least part of the time to fostering this community so that it makes sense to their core product HL. Some of the later posters seem to think that BT can use this approach without recognizing the effort it took for Valve to do this. Unless BT wants to just release source code (or try and sell it) like id software and lose control of their engine the only other alternative is to grow like Valve. Stick to what you do best, BTS.
  17. <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by Maxx: Ok well as long as we're putting up links to our favorite Onion articles.. here's mine. Enjoy! (Matt or Dog - but.. but.. this IS CM related! ) http://www.theonion.com/onion3412/enemytryouts.html <HR></BLOCKQUOTE> lol.. I didn't notice "brown skin" listed as an 'enemy feature' in the accompanying graphic before. That's really funny. ------------------ ---- To download my scenarios: go to http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm
  18. This is one of my alltime favourite Onion articles: Clinton deploys vowels to Bosnia Cities of Silbvjnsv, Grzny to be first recipients http://www.theonion.com/onion2816/vowels2816.html Before an emergency joint session of Congress yesterday, President Clinton announced U.S. plans to deploy over 75,000 vowels to the war-torn region of Bosnia. The deployment, the largest of its kind in American history, will provide the region with the critically needed letters A, E, I, O and U, and is hoped to render countless Bosnian names more pronounceable. etc.
  19. Hmmm.. seems like you modelled it correctly. You have a bunch of boy scouts, old men and invalids trying to stand up to regulars? Seems like a gone case. Maybe if you set their fanatacism really high...
  20. The Onion is excellent satire. This one didn't really crack a smile for me but another article in a similar vein was better. It's no longer in the archives but it ran along the lines of : Civil War Reenactors burn down Atlanta again If anyone can find it, post it.
  21. I think Hitler was on heroin when he thought that one up. What roads could support that thing? It would carve trenches wherever it went. Could it even be transported on rail?
  22. I also made that mistake by 'testing' a map that I had created over a couple hours and then accidentally saving over it. Arggh!!
  23. Modelling the worms that take up most of the map...hmmmmm.. A bit out of scale I would say
  24. Is anyone else having trouble trying to watch this on RealCrap player? Geez. It sounded interesting but first I have to upload to Realcrap7 and then it has connection probs. Is it even online anymore? Sigh. Maybe I should let the Mujahadeen have some of my boss' technology http://www.videoclipstream.com (requires Java-enabled browser) Apologies on tooting my company's horn. ------------------ ---- To download my scenarios: go to http://www3.telus.net/pop_n_fresh/combatmiss/index.htm
